"I danced there because it pays in cash, Rachel. That's all it ever was."

The words came out steadier than I felt. Rachel stood in the doorway with her phone still lit in her hand, and for a moment nobody moved.

"You could have told me," she said. Her voice wasn't sharp yet, just careful, like she was walking across ice she wasn't sure would hold.

"Told you what? That I dance at a club four nights a week to cover my son's medical bills? That's not exactly something I lead with."

"I got you a job here. I vouched for you." She looked at Adrian, then back at me. "I didn't even know you had a son with a health condition until right now. I thought I knew you a little, Claire."

"You know the version of me that's had time to exist since you called that afternoon. That's not nothing."

Rachel was quiet for a second, and the warmth in her face had gone somewhere I couldn't follow. "No. I suppose it isn't."

Adrian stood, and the movement seemed to break whatever standoff was building. "Rachel, she tried to get out of Friday. The manager confirmed it. This isn't some scheme."

"I didn't say it was a scheme." Rachel's smile came back, thin and quick, the kind you put on for a room instead of a person. "I'm not upset. I just don't like finding things out sideways, off an invoice, in front of my brother. That's all."

"That's fair," I said.

"Is it." She said it lightly, but her voice had a thin edge under it that hadn't been there an hour ago. "I'll let you two get back to work. Adrian, the Bennett contract can wait." She was gone before either of us could say anything else, her heels sharp against the floor.

Adrian watched the door for a moment after she'd left. "She'll come around."

"Will she?"

"I don't know," he admitted. "But she's not wrong to be hurt. I'd want to know too, if I'd put myself out for someone."

I didn't have an answer for that, so I went back to my desk and let the rest of the day pass in the ordinary rhythm of emails and calendars, grateful for anything that didn't require me to explain myself again.

By the time I got home, Ethan was already at the kitchen table with his homework spread out, Denise reading over his shoulder.

"Long day?" Denise asked.

"You could say that."

"Someone dropped this off for you about an hour ago." She nodded toward the counter, where a thick envelope sat, my name printed across the front in a font too formal for anything good. "Guy in a suit. Didn't say who sent it."

I already knew. I'd known the second I saw the paper stock, expensive and cream colored, the kind Nathan had started using for everything once he decided his old life wasn't good enough for regular envelopes anymore.

I waited until Ethan was in bed to open it.

Divorce papers. My name and his, filled in everywhere but my signature line, the same as before, except this time there was a note clipped to the front in handwriting I recognized.

*Heard you're working for Doyle Group now. Funny coincidence, considering. Sign these and we can both move on before things get complicated for everyone. Nathan.*

My hands went cold around the paper. He knew. Somehow, already, he knew exactly where I worked and exactly whose sister had gotten me the job, and he was using it the same way he used everything, as leverage instead of an apology.

My phone rang before I'd even set the papers down. Nathan.

"You got my note," he said, no greeting, straight to it.

"How do you know where I work?"

"Rachel mentioned a new hire at her brother's company. Claire Whitfield. Small city, smaller world than you'd think." His voice had the same practiced calm it always had when he was managing me instead of talking to me. "You didn't think that was worth telling me?"

"I don't owe you an itinerary of my life, Nathan."

"You work two floors from the man whose sister I'm married to. That's not a small detail, Claire. If Rachel starts asking questions about why her brother's new assistant used to be married to her husband, we both have a problem."

"That's not my problem. That's yours."

"It becomes yours the second Adrian Doyle finds out his employee is entangled with his sister's marriage." A pause, calculated, the kind he always left right before he said something meant to land. "Sign the papers, Claire. Take the money. Let this stay simple for both of us."

I looked at the check still clipped behind the papers, the number on it larger than the last one, like more money was supposed to make the same demand easier to swallow.

"I'm not signing anything," I said. "Not for you, not for a number, not to keep your secret comfortable."

"Then you're choosing this the hard way."

"I've been doing everything the hard way for six years. I know how to keep going."

He hung up without another word, which told me more than anything he could have said.

I sat at my kitchen table with the papers spread out in front of me, the same shoebox of old bank statements still in the hallway closet where I'd left it, and understood that whatever fragile peace I'd built at Doyle Group over the last few days was about to be tested by two people I hadn't even told the full truth to yet, for two very different reasons.

My phone buzzed once more. A text, not from Nathan.

*Rachel: We need to talk. Just the two of us. Tomorrow, before Adrian gets in.*

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    Before Adrian gets in

"You're early."Rachel was already at the small table in the corner cafe two blocks from Doyle Group when I walked in, two coffees in front of her, one already pushed toward the empty chair."You said before Adrian gets in. I wasn't sure how literal to take that.""Very literal. He doesn't know I asked you here." She wrapped both hands around her own cup without drinking from it. "I didn't want an audience for this."I sat down across from her, my pulse doing something uneven under my ribs. "Okay.""I've been up most of the night thinking about how to start this conversation." She finally looked up. "So I'm just going to ask you directly, and I need you to give me a real answer. Is there anything else, Claire? Anything else about you I don't know, that's going to land on my desk sideways one day the way that invoice did?"I thought about the shoebox in my hallway closet. The divorce papers still sitting on my kitchen table. Nathan's voice on the phone the night before, calm and certai

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    The invoice

"Sit down, Claire."Adrian didn't look up from the folder on his desk when I walked in Monday morning. I'd barely slept the whole weekend, running the conversation in my head a hundred different ways, and none of them had started with him this calm.I sat."I spent the weekend deciding what to do about Friday." He closed the folder and finally looked at me. "I still don't like the timing of it. But I checked with the club. Called the manager myself, asked him straight out whether you'd requested that booking or been assigned it."My stomach dropped. "You called Vince?""I called Vince." He said the name like it tasted bad in his mouth. "He confirmed what you told me. You tried to get out of Friday. He wouldn't let you."I didn't know what to say to that, so I said nothing."That doesn't fix the fact that you're dancing in a club four nights a week while working for me during the day," he said. "That's not a small thing, Claire. That's a lot of hours for one person.""I know how many h

"You're on in ten."Vince knocked twice on the dressing room door and didn't wait for an answer. I sat in front of the mirror, my hands steadier than they had any right to be, going through everything one more time. Stay in the back section. Two songs, no more. Keep my eyes on the crowd, not on any one face in it."Big group tonight," Priya said, leaning past me to check her own reflection. "Corporate types. Suits everywhere. They booked the whole back room.""I know.""You okay? You've been weird all week.""Tired."She didn't push, which was one of the things I liked about her. I finished my hair, checked the clasp on my earring, and told myself the same thing I'd been telling myself since Wednesday. Downtown was full of private rooms. This was just one more night, one more shift, and Adrian Doyle had no reason to know my face outside an office.I was wrong about that in the first ten seconds. The lights came up and I stepped out, and the back room was exactly the crowd Priya had de

"Can I skip Friday?"I kept my voice low, phone pressed hard against my ear, the stairwell door shut behind me so nobody at my new desk could hear.Vince laughed like I'd told a joke. "Skip it? You're the one they asked for. You don't skip the good bookings, that's how you stop getting good bookings.""I have a conflict.""Everybody's got a conflict. Show up, do two hours, walk out with more than you'd make in a week anywhere else." His voice dropped, almost kind. "I know your situation. Just show up."He hung up before I could argue, which was fair, because I didn't have an argument that didn't sound like a confession.I splashed water on my face in the stairwell bathroom and went back to my desk like nothing had happened, because that was the only version of me anyone at Doyle Group was allowed to see."Ms. Whitfield." Marcus stopped by, a folder in his hand. "Mr. Doyle needs the Friday details confirmed before noon. Client dinner, downtown, off the usual venue rotation. Some place

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    Booked by name

"You're actually going."Denise stood in my kitchen doorway in her bathrobe, coffee in hand, watching me button my one good blazer."I'm actually going.""To work for a man whose sister just called you out of nowhere.""To work for a man who offered me a job before any of that happened." I checked my reflection in the microwave door, the closest thing I had to a mirror this early. "The offer doesn't change because his sister turned out to be nice about it."I kissed Ethan's forehead where he sat eating cereal at the counter, told Denise I owed her for the school pickup, and left before either of them could slow me down."Claire Whitfield," I told the receptionist. "I have a meeting with Mr. Doyle.""He doesn't usually see people himself." She reached for her phone. "One moment.""Ms. Whitfield." Adrian crossed the lobby toward me, jacket off, sleeves rolled. "You came.""You told me not to be late.""I did." He held the door. "Come up."His office took the corner of the fourteenth flo
