Before Adrian gets in

"You're early."

Rachel was already at the small table in the corner cafe two blocks from Doyle Group when I walked in, two coffees in front of her, one already pushed toward the empty chair.

"You said before Adrian gets in. I wasn't sure how literal to take that."

"Very literal. He doesn't know I asked you here." She wrapped both hands around her own cup without drinking from it. "I didn't want an audience for this."

I sat down across from her, my pulse doing something uneven under my ribs. "Okay."

"I've been up most of the night thinking about how to start this conversation." She finally looked up. "So I'm just going to ask you directly, and I need you to give me a real answer. Is there anything else, Claire? Anything else about you I don't know, that's going to land on my desk sideways one day the way that invoice did?"

I thought about the shoebox in my hallway closet. The divorce papers still sitting on my kitchen table. Nathan's voice on the phone the night before, calm and certain that none of this could ever touch him.

"There are things about my life that are complicated," I said carefully. "Things that don't have anything to do with you or Adrian or this job. I'm not going to sit here and pretend my whole life is simple, because it isn't. But nothing I haven't told you is going to hurt this company, or hurt you."

"That's not really an answer."

"It's the honest one I can give you right now."

Rachel studied me for a long moment, her mouth pressing thin, like she wanted to push further and had decided, for now, not to. "Okay. I'll take that. For now."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. I'm still figuring out how I feel about all of it." She finally drank some of her coffee, like the admission had cost her something and she needed a reason to look away while she recovered from it. "Can I tell you something? When Nathan introduced you outside that hotel, I thought, what a strange coincidence, running into his cousin on the street like that. I even thought about inviting you to dinner sometime, you and his side of the family. Get everyone together properly."

My stomach dropped somewhere I couldn't easily locate again.

"I don't really see his side of the family much," I said, which was true in a way she couldn't understand.

"That's a shame. He talks about growing up with you like you two were close once." She tilted her head slightly. "Were you? Close, I mean. Before whatever happened that made things distant."

"We were close." The words came out without a single waver in them, which surprised me more than the question did. "A long time ago."

"He gets quiet whenever I bring you up. I used to think it was nothing. Now I'm wondering if there's a story there too." She said it lightly, testing, the way you toss a line into water without much hope of a bite. "Families are complicated. I get it. I won't push."

I wanted to laugh, and hated myself a little for how close it came to the surface, because there was nothing funny about sitting across from this woman and hearing her call the wreckage of my marriage a family being complicated.

"Can I ask you something instead?" I said, needing to move the conversation somewhere I could survive. "Why did you help me? That day outside the hotel. You didn't have to."

Rachel considered the question like she hadn't actually thought about it before. "You looked like someone who'd had every good thing taken from her in the same afternoon and was still standing up straight anyway. I don't know. I saw myself in that, a little. Or who I'd want to be, if it ever happened to me." She shrugged, embarrassed by her own honesty. "Turns out I'm not as good at reading people as I thought I was."

"You read me fine that day."

"Did I?" She looked at me hard enough that I had to work not to look away first. "I still don't fully understand the club, Claire. I believe you about the money. I believe your son needs it. What I don't understand is why it felt like you were hiding an entire person from me, not just a job."

"I wasn't hiding a person. I was hiding a version of myself I didn't think you'd want at your brother's company." I turned my cup a quarter turn on the table, needing something to do with my hands. "You met me on the worst day of my life. I didn't know how to be anything but careful after that. Careful with what I told people. Careful with what I let anyone see. That's not the same as lying to you."

"Isn't it, a little?"

"Maybe." I made myself hold her eyes instead of looking away from the question. "I don't have a clean answer for you, Rachel. I have a kid who needs things I can't always afford, and a life that doesn't fit neatly into the version of me you met that day. I've been trying to keep both versions from touching each other for so long I forgot how tired that makes a person."

Rachel's face softened, just slightly, the first real give since we'd sat down. "I believe that part, at least."

"Thank you."

The cafe door chimed. I looked up out of instinct and my whole chest went cold.

Adrian stood in the doorway, scanning the room, already spotting us in the corner. Rachel followed my gaze and her mouth went tight with something between surprise and dread.

"He wasn't supposed to know about this," she said quietly, already on her feet before he'd made it halfway across the room. "Claire, whatever you're about to say to him, let me handle it."

Adrian reached the table, his eyes moving between the two of us, reading a conversation he hadn't been part of. When his gaze landed on me, his shoulders dropped half an inch, just enough for me to notice, before the question in his face turned serious again.

"What's going on here," he said. It wasn't really a question.

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    Closing in

"I danced there because it pays in cash, Rachel. That's all it ever was."The words came out steadier than I felt. Rachel stood in the doorway with her phone still lit in her hand, and for a moment nobody moved."You could have told me," she said. Her voice wasn't sharp yet, just careful, like she was walking across ice she wasn't sure would hold."Told you what? That I dance at a club four nights a week to cover my son's medical bills? That's not exactly something I lead with.""I got you a job here. I vouched for you." She looked at Adrian, then back at me. "I didn't even know you had a son with a health condition until right now. I thought I knew you a little, Claire.""You know the version of me that's had time to exist since you called that afternoon. That's not nothing."Rachel was quiet for a second, and the warmth in her face had gone somewhere I couldn't follow. "No. I suppose it isn't."Adrian stood, and the movement seemed to break whatever standoff was building. "Rachel, s

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    The invoice

"Sit down, Claire."Adrian didn't look up from the folder on his desk when I walked in Monday morning. I'd barely slept the whole weekend, running the conversation in my head a hundred different ways, and none of them had started with him this calm.I sat."I spent the weekend deciding what to do about Friday." He closed the folder and finally looked at me. "I still don't like the timing of it. But I checked with the club. Called the manager myself, asked him straight out whether you'd requested that booking or been assigned it."My stomach dropped. "You called Vince?""I called Vince." He said the name like it tasted bad in his mouth. "He confirmed what you told me. You tried to get out of Friday. He wouldn't let you."I didn't know what to say to that, so I said nothing."That doesn't fix the fact that you're dancing in a club four nights a week while working for me during the day," he said. "That's not a small thing, Claire. That's a lot of hours for one person.""I know how many h

"You're on in ten."Vince knocked twice on the dressing room door and didn't wait for an answer. I sat in front of the mirror, my hands steadier than they had any right to be, going through everything one more time. Stay in the back section. Two songs, no more. Keep my eyes on the crowd, not on any one face in it."Big group tonight," Priya said, leaning past me to check her own reflection. "Corporate types. Suits everywhere. They booked the whole back room.""I know.""You okay? You've been weird all week.""Tired."She didn't push, which was one of the things I liked about her. I finished my hair, checked the clasp on my earring, and told myself the same thing I'd been telling myself since Wednesday. Downtown was full of private rooms. This was just one more night, one more shift, and Adrian Doyle had no reason to know my face outside an office.I was wrong about that in the first ten seconds. The lights came up and I stepped out, and the back room was exactly the crowd Priya had de

"Can I skip Friday?"I kept my voice low, phone pressed hard against my ear, the stairwell door shut behind me so nobody at my new desk could hear.Vince laughed like I'd told a joke. "Skip it? You're the one they asked for. You don't skip the good bookings, that's how you stop getting good bookings.""I have a conflict.""Everybody's got a conflict. Show up, do two hours, walk out with more than you'd make in a week anywhere else." His voice dropped, almost kind. "I know your situation. Just show up."He hung up before I could argue, which was fair, because I didn't have an argument that didn't sound like a confession.I splashed water on my face in the stairwell bathroom and went back to my desk like nothing had happened, because that was the only version of me anyone at Doyle Group was allowed to see."Ms. Whitfield." Marcus stopped by, a folder in his hand. "Mr. Doyle needs the Friday details confirmed before noon. Client dinner, downtown, off the usual venue rotation. Some place

"You're actually going."Denise stood in my kitchen doorway in her bathrobe, coffee in hand, watching me button my one good blazer."I'm actually going.""To work for a man whose sister just called you out of nowhere.""To work for a man who offered me a job before any of that happened." I checked my reflection in the microwave door, the closest thing I had to a mirror this early. "The offer doesn't change because his sister turned out to be nice about it."I kissed Ethan's forehead where he sat eating cereal at the counter, told Denise I owed her for the school pickup, and left before either of them could slow me down."Claire Whitfield," I told the receptionist. "I have a meeting with Mr. Doyle.""He doesn't usually see people himself." She reached for her phone. "One moment.""Ms. Whitfield." Adrian crossed the lobby toward me, jacket off, sleeves rolled. "You came.""You told me not to be late.""I did." He held the door. "Come up."His office took the corner of the fourteenth flo
