Chapter 1

"If you want to be my Luna, you need to learn how to help me run this pack. Right now, you don't even understand the basics. How could I trust you as my Luna?"

A muffled voice came through the door. "Damian, another pack has attacked our territory. The Alpha is furious. He wants you back immediately to repel them!"

Damian heard the guard and swallowed whatever he had been about to say.

"Stay here and behave until I come back," he said in a low voice.

At those words, the numbness on my face finally shifted.

After he was gone, I broke down and sobbed.

Five years. He was finally gone.

Five years ago my father handed me over to him, and he swore that one day he would make me his Luna, in a ceremony so grand and so beautiful that everyone would envy me and wonder how I had gotten so lucky.

Instead he found fault with every part of me and told me I was nowhere near good enough to be his Luna.

Every day, he graded my manners, my posture, and my education. He brought in one tutor after another. I threw myself into my studies, hoping to finish sooner and become his Luna, but he was never satisfied. He picked at everything and belittled me until I was worthless.

To keep me under his control, he ordered the guards to watch me around the clock, cut off my access to every means of communication, and confined me to that tiny house.

I looked at the black-and-blue bruises covering my body. After all these years, the wounds inside me ran far deeper.

I left the estate as fast as I could and headed for my father's home.

My heart leaped. I had never felt such a rush of excitement and joy. For five years, I had endured everything Damian did to me, and everyone believed I had finally submitted. Even I had believed there would never be a way out.

I never expected a chance like this to come so suddenly or feel so exhilarating.

I looked at my father's house, and every step I took felt like walking back through those years.

I used to play in that courtyard, laughing, while my father watched the birds and said, "Selene, if you're ever unhappy, remember that you can come to me. I'm sorry. His pack is simply too powerful..."

I was small then, and I did not understand what he meant.

Now I did. Every step I took carried me closer to freedom. Dad, I hope you still remember what you said.

I knocked.

"Come in." His voice had lost the authority it used to have.

I walked in slowly. My father, Alaric Vale, sat frowning at his computer without looking up. His black hair had become threaded with silver.

He looked twenty years older. My throat closed. "Dad..." Before I could finish, I broke into wrenching sobs.

Behind the desk, my father stared at me, stunned.

"Selene..." His reddened eyes filled with tears.

I threw myself into his arms. His hands settled stiffly against my back.

"I'm sorry... I wasn't strong enough. I didn't have the courage to stand up to him..."

"Dad... you told me once that if things went badly I could come to you. Didn't you?" I said through the tears.

"But Damian... and our pack, the way things are now..." His brows drew together.

"He's gone to deal with the fighting in his territory," I said, meeting my father's eyes.

My father studied the pack records on his screen and thought for a while.

"Sweetheart... you've only just come of age. Are you sure you won't reconsider being Damian's Luna?"

I had calmed down a little. I looked at his aged face and said nothing. Slowly, I removed my coat, revealing deep scars, some faded with age and others unmistakably fresh.

"This... how could this happen... Damian promised me. He told me that once you met his requirements he would make you his Luna..." My father's trembling hand reached toward the marks.

His eyes were red. He was quiet for a while, and then he said, "Tell me what you want to do, sweetheart. Whatever you want, I'll do it..."

I looked at him and said slowly, "Dad, if Damian says I'm unfit to be his Luna, then find me a mate. I want an unbreakable bond that neither of us can betray."

"But... once a bond like that is sealed, it can never be undone." His frown deepened.

"I know, Dad. But it's the only way to cut every last tie between him and me," I said calmly.

"I have a few conditions. Please find someone who meets them.

"First, he has to accept a bond of absolute loyalty, and he has to be able to seal it quickly.

"Second, he can't be vain or obsessed with status. He has to be a decent man.

"Third, he can't have any messy personal entanglements."

I listed the conditions slowly, watching conflicting emotions cross my father's face.

"Please do it as quickly as you can, Dad. The bond has to be sealed before Damian suppresses the unrest."

Damian was dead. The proudest man I had ever known had died in the most humiliating way possible, in front of everyone.Everything the Blackwood Pack had done was laid bare for all to see.The Alpha King ordered a full investigation into the conduct of every pack, so that nothing like it could happen again.Rowan was acquitted and awarded substantial property as compensation.Rowan and I went home together. He was much thinner than before, but his eyes were as clear and bright as ever.I wrapped both hands around one of his.He looked at me and said nothing, only gripping my hand tightly in return.Sunlight warmed us. His hand was warm, and my heart was warmer still. We returned to the pack together. From far away, we could see Nell waiting at the gates with a guard beside her.Rowan ran to his mother and wrapped her tightly in his arms."Mom, I'm home."Nell's tears would not stop, falling one after another onto Rowan's shoulders.I stood off to one side and watched in silence as peac

"Bring in Marcus Pell and Tobias Pell."At my order, Damian's eyes flew wide and he shouted."How could that be? Marcus is dead, and Tobias died long before him."Selene, stop lying to me. Is this how you think you'll make me give in?"He roared, his former arrogance gone.Marcus and Tobias came forward, and Tobias carried a crystal glowing faint purple. The color drained out of Damian's face and he collapsed into his chair."How is this possible..."He drew a deep breath. "No. I haven't lost yet."Then he appealed to the Alpha King. "Marcus was once my Beta, and Tobias was his trusted man. Selene has clearly joined forces with them to frame me.""Silence," the Alpha King said. "Let them speak."Damian went back to his seat, white-faced.Marcus and Tobias bowed. Then Marcus began."I was once Damian's Beta. Moonlight Shoal began when one of those packs came to the Blackwood Pack for help and offered us seventy percent of the black crystal mine there."When Damian heard the offer, he gr

They came forward, saluted the Alpha King, and spoke in unison."We wish to bring charges against Damian Blackwood."For years, under Damian's leadership, the Blackwood Pack has repeatedly seized our land and mineral rights."Blackwood men prowl near our borders constantly, warning that refusal to cooperate means annihilation."They paused, and one of the Alphas continued."And more than that. Because I refused to go along with what he was doing, he led his men in and killed my pack's guards to make an example of us.""No, this is a frame-up!" A furious shout cut across them."Alpha King, they came here to frame me. How could I be the kind of man who breaks the peace between packs? My pack has always coexisted peacefully with the others."As he spoke, Damian pointed toward several packs. The people from those packs turned their faces away at once and ignored him.The Alpha King watched the exchange and warned Damian."Disrupt this council again and you'll be dragged out."Continue."Th

Early the next morning, I set out with Marcus and Tobias. To avoid any ambush Damian might have arranged, guards escorted us to my father's territory.Once we joined my father, we headed to Central City, the heart of the Pack Alliance, where the council would convene. We reached the city at noon and followed the crowds toward the council grounds. The city was buzzing, with everyone debating what the council would address. Then the Alphas of several small packs approached my father and nodded to him.He nodded back.I understood. These were the packs allied with us.Once the Central City guards had shown us into a reception hall, I looked at my father."When does it start?""Soon." My father took a slow sip of water. No one spoke after that. We waited quietly for the council to open. After a while a guard came to tell us to follow him. Before long, we reached a great hall gleaming with gold, and the guard signaled for us to enter alone."Come on," my father said quietly, and walked in.

I looked at how frightened he was.I understood why Damian terrified him. I used to be exactly the same.I spoke slowly."You're an important witness too. Don't you want revenge for your family and friends?"Don't you want to watch Damian fall from power?"If I told you I was absolutely certain we would win, would you still leave?"His trembling gradually eased. After a moment he raised his head, and there was hesitation in his eyes."Can it really be done? That's Damian we're talking about. If... if it fails, we all die."I gave a short, bitter laugh. "Have you forgotten what you just went through?"If you don't testify and it fails anyway, you still die. Do you understand?"My words struck home. His mouth opened and no sound came out.At last, he bowed to me again."I understand. I'll come forward as a witness at the council."Then he went on."The man I trust is called Tobias Pell. He's been in the black crystal mine at Moonlight Shoal all this time. Those three packs came to their

I went to Rowan's study, which I had never set foot in before. It was a big room, with all kinds of books arranged neatly across several shelves. After searching for a while, I found Pack Management Strategy, flipped through it, and drew out a black-and-gold talisman. The talisman floated into the air, giving off a faint golden light."Mr. Quinn," I said carefully."You're Rowan's mate?" A bright male voice came through the talisman amid a rustling sound, as though he were busy with something."I knew that boy would call on me one day."Go on, then. What does he want from me?"I explained everything that was already in motion. Then I made Rowan's request."Rowan hopes you can help Cora bring back either Marcus or the evidence."He laughed softly on the other end."Bringing down the Blackwood Pack? Now that's interesting.""Then again." His tone shifted. "Did Rowan really not tell you who I am?""No. He only told me you were Mr. Quinn," I said, puzzled. I was extremely curious about who
