Chapter 7

Author: Echo
I watched the subtle panic in Augustine's eyes, the pain in my chest turning to numbness.

"I'm probably just overthinking things, being weak like this," I said, forcing a smile. "Augustine, if I were to leave you one day, what would you do?"

Hearing this, his expression visibly relaxed. He even let out a small chuckle.

"You silly thing, why would you even think that?" He gently stroked my hair. "We are Mates, our souls are bound. I would never, ever let you leave me. Not ever."

His tone was so confident, so possessive, as if I were merely a piece in his collection, something that could never escape his grasp.

Augustine kissed my forehead and left, claiming he had some urgent business to attend to.

The moment he was gone, I sent out my bat familiar to follow him.

When the bat reached the window of our master suite, I saw a sickening sight.

Lucy was pouting at our dining table, pushing away a crystal goblet. "I don't want to drink this. It's too gamey, and the color is so dark. It must not be fresh."

Augustine sat beside her patiently, feeding her with a spoon like a child. "There, there. This is very precious blood. You're carrying a child now, you need the nourishment."

"But I really can't stomach it," Lucy whined, shaking his arm.

"Then I'll drink it with you, how about that?" he said with a doting smile. "You have to be a good girl, for our child."

The tenderness he showed her was identical to the tenderness he used to show me.

"After the child is born," he continued, "I'll have Haley raise it as her own. It will be our heir."

Lucy's expression soured.

"It's the only way for the child to have a legitimate claim," Augustine explained. "Haley is my rightful mate. Only a child raised by her can inherit the title of Prince."

Hearing that, I almost burst into the room to tear their faces off.

So, in Augustine's grand plan, I was not only supposed to be the clueless, cheated-on wife, but also the adoptive mother to his lover's child.

He was grinding my dignity into the dirt.

After they finished the blood, Augustine summoned the castle servants and gave them a stern warning.

"Lucy has just completed her transformation. Her emotions may be unstable, so you must be patient with her. Also," his voice turned menacing, "no one is to breathe a word of her presence here to the lady. Do you understand?"

The servants nodded fearfully.

Three days until the end.

Augustine came to the hospital with a bottle of precious unicorn blood.

"I had a friend in Northern Europe procure this for me. It will do wonders for your old wound," he said, presenting it to me like a trophy.

Unicorn blood was indeed rare and powerful, worth a fortune on the black market.

But what I had seen through my familiar was the truth: yesterday, Lucy had complained that the unicorn blood was too sweet, took a few sips, and pushed the rest away. This was what he brought to me.

"Thank you," I said, my face a blank mask as I took the bottle.

That evening, Clara reported, "My lady, everything for the banquet is ready."

I nodded. "You've worked hard."

Two days left.

Augustine brought me an exquisite crown as an early birthday present.

"I had this crown custom-made. It's one of a kind, crafted entirely by hand," he said apologetically. "I accidentally shattered your old one. I'm so sorry."

I examined the crown. It was beautiful, but clearly a rush job. The craftsmanship was nowhere near that of my original.

And again, my familiar had shown me the truth.

Yesterday, Lucy had seen my crown and whined that she wanted it. Augustine had given it to her without a second thought.

"It's lovely," I said, my voice devoid of emotion.

After Augustine left, Clara secretly told me, "My lady, Prince Augustine has purchased the Cherry Blossom Manor behind the castle at a high price. They say it's a gift for her pregnancy."

I let out a cold laugh. "How generous of him."

The final day.

Augustine came to pick me up from the hospital himself.

"The banquet starts at seven tonight. Remember to be there," he said gently. "I'm so looking forward to this 'memorable' party you've planned."

I smiled back. "I promise, it will be a night you'll remember for the rest of your life."

Back at the castle, I found a pair of black lace stockings in the master bedroom. Obviously left behind by Lucy.

I threw them in the trash without a second thought.

Just then, Augustine's phone rang.

He answered, and his face immediately tensed. "What? Stomach pains? I'm on my way!"

After hanging up, he turned to me, flustered. "Haley, something urgent has come up. I might be a little late to the banquet. You go ahead and get ready. I'll be there as soon as I can."

As he turned to leave, I didn't try to stop him.

I just watched his retreating back and said, very quietly,

"Augustine, goodbye."

Lucy finally realized what she had let slip. She trembled, her eyes darting away.“I asked you a question,” Augustine snarled, looking like he was about to tear a piece of flesh from her body. The sheer violence radiating from him made the servants shrink back in terror.Lila, however, watched the spectacle with detached amusement, enjoying the show.Lucy’s mouth opened and closed, but it was too late for denials. Augustine’s fingers dug into her jaw, forcing her to look at him.Blood streamed down her face. Shaking uncontrollably, she finally broke. “It was me!” she screamed. “I told Finnian to do it! I told him Haley was in the way, and I told him to get rid of her! I just didn’t want you to give all your assets to her!”All the grief and rage that had been festering inside Augustine finally found its release. He grabbed a fistful of her hair and dragged her from the floor. Lucy shrieked in pain as he hauled her, stumbling, toward the door.A gust of wind blew in. The sun was at its

Before Lucy’s fingers could even touch the papers, Augustine snatched them. The parchment crinkled in his fist, the edges nearly tearing from the force of his grip. He thought he had already received the worst news possible, but as his eyes fell on the first conclusion, a wave of ice water crashed over him.“Subject's bloodline is critically damaged. He is sterile.”Augustine stared at the word, the color draining from his face as a roaring filled his ears. His hands trembled as he flipped to the second page.“Paternity test result: Augustine is not the biological father.”His breath hitched. He tore open the third report.“Further analysis confirms the biological father is Finnian.”In that instant, all the strength left Augustine’s body. He staggered back, his spine slamming against the corner of a table with a dull thud. He felt no pain, only staring at the words, his eyes turning red with shock and humiliation.“Impossible…” he whispered, his voice barely audible.Lucy’s face had a

While pureblood vampires were more resilient to the sun than their lesser counterparts, the punishment by sunlight was still a profound torture of both body and soul.Augustine didn’t resist. He had lost the will to.He knew it would hurt. He knew he would burn, that he would be forced to face the limits of his body’s endurance over and over. But none of that could compare to the wound in his heart that would never close. The pain of losing Haley was far worse.Meanwhile, Lucy’s position within the Salinger Clan deteriorated rapidly. She had assumed that as long as Augustine was around, she would have a safety net. But when she learned he had been stripped of his power and sentenced to torture, she realized the game had changed completely. She immediately called Finnian.“Finnian, you can’t abandon me!” she whispered, her voice laced with panic. “Augustine is finished. He has nothing left. The Nightshade Clan took everything. You promised me…”The line was silent for a few seconds, fol

A month later, the Nightshade Clan officially announced that a distant relative, Helena, would be succeeding as the new Princess. The old ruler had fallen, and a new heir had risen. As for what truly happened, those who knew the truth kept their silence.Augustine, meanwhile, was lost in an endless night. After returning to the Salinger Clan, he stopped feeding. He did nothing but clutch Haley’s belongings—the broken ring, a shawl she once wore, even an old perfume bottle—and sit motionless in a darkened room like a soulless puppet. He became shockingly thin, his pale skin losing its last hint of color, his eyes sinking into his skull. The once sharp, arrogant, and predatory gaze was now just a hollow, dead void. The Salinger elders tried to reason with him, but it was useless.Under intense pressure from the Nightshade Clan, the consequences of the blood oath were enforced to the letter. All of Augustine’s assets—his territories, mines, castles, businesses, and personal wealth—were tr

A week later, I announced that the Nightshade Clan would be hosting a grand celebration to mark my return. I made a public show of procuring a large quantity of rare, high-grade blood for the banquet, inviting representatives from all the major clans to attend. As Kael predicted, the bait worked perfectly. On the night of the banquet, I moved through the crowd in a deep red velvet gown, exchanging pleasantries with the clan representatives. Everything was proceeding according to plan.“Lady Haley, congratulations on your return,” a young, unfamiliar server said, approaching me respectfully. In his hand was an ornate goblet filled with a dark red liquid.I took the glass and immediately sensed the subtle, yet lethal, trace of silver dust within. The plan was a success. In full view of everyone, I slowly raised my glass, a graceful smile on my lips. “Thank you all for being here tonight. To the glory of the Nightshade Clan, and to peace and prosperity for the entire vampire world—cheers!

Three days later, Kael came to the Nightshade castle with his findings.“For their own safety, they won’t make another move anytime soon,” Kael said, sitting gracefully across from me. He placed a file on the table. “However, if you’re still worried, I would be honored to serve as your protector.”I raised an eyebrow, a smile playing on my lips. “I don’t think I can afford to hire the Prince of Kingswell as a bodyguard. What would that even cost?”“It’s free,” Kael replied without hesitation, his amber eyes shining with sincerity.I was taken aback by his directness. From that day on, Kael truly kept his word, staying by my side almost constantly. When I was handling clan business, he would sit quietly nearby, reading a book. When I needed to go out, he would follow silently behind me. He even tasted my food and drink for poison before every meal.At first, I felt a bit awkward, but gradually, his presence became a source of unparalleled security.“The terms of this contract are not in
