Chapter 2

Author: kelly
When Lucas came home that night, my three suitcases were already packed.

I'd spent eight years slowly filling that apartment with pieces of my life.

It took me only two hours to pack it all away.

He walked over cautiously and reached for my hand, speaking in a tired, coaxing voice.

"Sophia, I'm sorry. Lillian's condition really is serious. I know you had a rough day. When her therapy ends next month, I'll tell her the truth and end things for good."

I jerked my hand away in disgust.

I rubbed my wrist until the skin turned red. Only then did the sick feeling fade.

My reaction clearly hurt him. His brows drew together.

"Sophia, enough. I'm trying to save someone's life. Does being called my girlfriend really matter more than that?"

He pulled out his phone and sent me $6,000 on the spot.

"That's for the damage and the fine. It's twice what you lost. And stop talking about breaking up. We've been together for eight years. Don't throw it all away over something this small."

I laughed. "So now that I've caught you, you're not even going to pretend you're working late anymore?"

Lucas frowned, genuinely confused. "Sophia, when did you become like this? We're talking about someone's life versus your hurt feelings. How can you not see which matters more?"

During my third year of college, my mother discovered my father's affair. Distraught, she lost control of her car on the way home and died in the crash.

Lucas had held me outside the morgue, repeating the same words over and over: "Sophia, you still have me."

Ever since then, I'd hated lies and betrayal more than anything else in a relationship.

For eight years, Lucas had stayed by my side without complaint.

He made me soup whenever I worked late. No matter how late I got home, he always left the living room light on for me. Every month, when my cramps started, he'd sit beside me and rub my stomach.

Once, I asked him what would happen if he ever stopped loving me.

He pulled me into his arms and promised that as long as he was alive, he'd never let me go.

Those little things had become everything I believed love was supposed to be.

But eight years later, Lucas was the one lying to me. The one betraying me.

I closed my eyes. I couldn't stand looking at his self-righteous face for another second.

When I said nothing, Lucas sighed.

His tone softened as he tried to coax me again. "Sophia, I never meant to hurt you. I'll end this as soon as I can. Just trust me. The wedding invitations are already printed. Lillian was never part of the plan. You're the only person I've ever wanted to marry."

The way he said it, as if he were making some noble sacrifice for me, made my stomach turn.

I grabbed the glass from the table and hurled it at his feet. "Lucas, you make me sick!"

It shattered, and a shard sliced his ankle.

That finally made him snap.

Lucas looked down at the blood, his voice turning cold. "That's enough, Sophia. I've told you she's ill. Why can't you show a little understanding?"

His phone rang before I could answer.

The moment he saw Lillian's name, all the anger disappeared from his face.

He stepped onto the balcony and spoke softly as he comforted her. I heard him promise to take her out on a boat the next day to help her clear her head.

That patience and tenderness used to belong to me.

Now I couldn't even remember the last time he'd made it through an entire dinner with me. There was always some difficult client who needed him.

After he hung up, he told me to calm down. Then he walked out and slammed the door behind him.

The moment the door shut, my phone buzzed. The movers were downstairs.

After they carried out the last box, I stood in the empty apartment and looked around one last time.

Then I noticed the matching aprons hanging in the kitchen.

Working in a bakery meant I always got flour, cream, or chocolate on my clothes.

So Lucas had designed the aprons himself and had our initials embroidered on them.

Back then, he'd promised to be my kitchen helper for the rest of his life.

Now that promise meant nothing.

Things stayed quiet for a while after that.Lucas finally seemed to have given up. He stopped coming around. One evening, I closed the café and headed back to my apartment. As I passed an alley, Lillian suddenly stepped out of the shadows. She was clutching an unlabeled glass bottle, her face twisted with rage."Sophia! You destroyed me! If my life is over, I'm taking you down with me!"I instinctively backed away and pressed the emergency button in my pocket."Lillian, assault is a felony. You can still stop before you make things worse."Lillian screamed, "This is all your fault, you bitch! If it weren't for you, Lucas never would've called the police on me! I'm going to ruin you! Go to hell!"She lunged forward and hurled the contents of the bottle at me.I threw my arms over my head and squeezed my eyes shut. But the burning pain never came.I slowly opened my eyes. Lucas was standing in front of me, shielding me with his body. The acid had splashed across his back and right arm.W

I thought Lucas would finally take the hint and leave me alone. Instead, he changed tactics the very next day.He stopped showing up at the café but started placing huge anonymous delivery orders. The florist next door eventually told me that he sat on a bench across the street every day, watching my café from a distance like a ghost.I was staring at another batch of anonymous orders on my phone, wondering how to get rid of him for good, when someone suddenly rushed toward me.It was Lillian. She dropped to her knees outside my shop.Dark circles ringed her eyes. Her hair was a mess, and she looked nothing like the smug woman who'd walked into my bakery a month ago."Sophia, I'm begging you. Please talk to Lucas for me. Make him drop the case! I'm still young. If I'm convicted of fraud and extortion, my whole life will be over!"I frowned and stepped back. After everything that had happened over the past month, Lillian looked like she was falling apart. She grabbed my leg and sobbed.

When I opened the seaside café that morning, Lucas was already waiting outside."Sophia."His voice was hoarse, and he looked like hell. "I've been looking for you for more than two weeks. I finally found you."I didn't even look up. "Move, please. You're in the way."I ignored him and went about opening the café, setting up the umbrellas, tables, and chairs. Then I headed to the kitchen to start prepping for the day.Lucas stepped in front of me. "Sophia, I found out the truth. Lillian lied to me. She faked her depression! I know you have every reason to hate me. I was an idiot. I got so caught up in trying to save her that I couldn't see what I was doing. I'm begging you for one more chance. I was wrong. I know that now. I really do!"Lucas pulled a bag from behind his back. Inside were the matching aprons I'd thrown away."Look, I washed them. Three times. I even sprayed them with perfume. They don't smell anymore."I looked at the wrinkled aprons and almost laughed. So what if they

When Lillian returned from her checkup and saw the transfer, her smile froze. Her phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor.Lucas happened to be walking past.He bent down to pick it up, but his gaze landed on the open chat on the screen. It was a conversation between Lillian and one of her friends.Lucas's expression darkened as he slowly scrolled up."LOL! Sophia was way easier to deal with than I expected. All it took was a few screenshots to run that idiot out of town.""I thought she'd put up more of a fight. She even gave up her shop! Too bad it ended so quickly. I wasn't done milking the drama for attention yet!""Don't worry. I've already signed three brand deals. As long as Lucas feels sorry for me, I'll have all the money and connections I need.""Faking depression works unbelievably well. I cry for two minutes, and he comes running."Lillian saw what he was reading and lunged for the phone.Lucas shoved her away without thinking, sending her crashing to the floor. The s

After making sure Lillian was settled and asleep, Lucas returned to the apartment he'd once shared with Sophia. He regretted posting the video, but at the time, he'd convinced himself he had no choice. Because of Lillian's depression, he'd been afraid the backlash might push her over the edge.Besides, Sophia had always been reasonable. Once he explained everything, she'd understand. They were getting married, after all. She couldn't stay mad at him forever. Lucas rode the elevator upstairs, already imagining how he'd make things right. He'd even stopped at Sophia's favorite bakery to buy her a chestnut cake as a peace offering. But when he opened the door, the apartment was silent.Everything Sophia owned was gone. Even the familiar vanilla scent of her air freshener had vanished. Not a single trace of her remained. It was as if she'd never lived there at all.Lucas turned on the light. The empty closet and missing suitcases made his stomach drop.He called her immediately, but a reco

I snapped out of my thoughts, took down the matching aprons, and tossed them into the trash chute outside.I'd barely gotten into a cab when a post popped up on my phone: "Avoid this place! This bakery in a luxury mall scams customers, and the owner is completely unethical!"My stomach tightened. Lillian had posted it.She'd completely twisted what happened. According to her, I'd discriminated against her because she had depression, refused her order, and then smashed things in front of her to intimidate her. She'd conveniently edited out every second that showed her destroying my cake. All that remained was a clip of me coldly saying, "I'm not taking this order," followed by a shot of the wreckage on the floor.Thousands of angry comments poured in.[Thank God this showed up on my feed. I was about to order a dessert table for my engagement party.][Probably some bitter single woman who can't stand seeing anyone else happy. Someone should sue her.]My account was flooded with hateful
