Chapter 4

Author: Lara Dimson
Even during our honeymoon, Nathan had refused to share food off the same plate with me. He always ordered his own dish and made a point of using separate utensils. He said cross-contamination bothered him, that sharing utensils killed his appetite.

Yet here he was, eating with obvious pleasure.

I knew I should turn around and leave, but the inn's lakeside bonfire gathering only happened once a week, and I wasn't about to let them ruin something I'd been looking forward to.

I started scanning the crowd for a spot far from where they were sitting.

But Nathan noticed me first. He stood up and walked over, his tone already edged with annoyance.

"What are you doing here? I told you I'd take you next time."

I didn't answer. My eyes had caught on something else—matching custom sweatshirts that both he and Sienna were wearing.

Years ago, I'd told him that if we ever made it to Lake Tahoe, I wanted to get matching hoodies with our names embroidered on them, the kind couples wore in those cheesy vacation photos.

Now I was looking at the back of his sweatshirt. Stitched across the shoulders in clean, white thread was a single name: Sienna.

She must have noticed where I was looking because she turned slightly, letting the firelight catch the name embroidered across the back of hers: Nathan.

I felt something cold and distant settle in my chest.

I wasn’t surprised, not even a little.

Nathan must have realized what I'd seen because he shifted his shoulders away from me and looked elsewhere.

"Sienna and I were passing through on business. I know you've always wanted to come here, so I thought I'd scope it out for you first."

He paused, then added in the tone of someone offering a favor, "Well, since you're here now, you might as well sit with us."

Then he turned to Sienna. "Push our flights back two days."

Sienna shot me a quick, irritated glance before letting out a light laugh.

"She really picked the perfect timing, didn't she? Showing up on the last night of the trip."

"But Nathan, I really do need to get back for that investor call on Monday. Why don't you just change your ticket? You can stay and show her around."

She was already pulling out her phone.

Nathan's expression tightened slightly, and then, exactly as I expected, he said, "Actually, don't bother. Work comes first."

"The timing really isn't great. We'll come back another time—the company's about to go public, and we can't afford any distractions right now."

Sienna turned to look at me with clear satisfaction in her eyes.

Nathan, clearly anticipating some kind of jealous outburst, added quickly, "Book her on the same flight as us. Put her seat next to mine."

Before Sienna could respond, I spoke.

"That's not necessary. I'm—"

A sudden burst of music and cheering erupted from the other side of the lake, drowning out the rest of my sentence.

Nathan frowned. "What?"

Sienna's eyes gleamed. "The fireworks are starting. Go ahead and watch—I'll handle the flight stuff with her."

Nathan's attention had already shifted. He nodded distractedly, said something I didn't catch, and followed the crowd toward the dock where the fireworks were being set up.

The moment he was out of earshot, Sienna dropped the act entirely. She crossed her arms and looked at me with open contempt.

"You've already filed for divorce, so what is this? Did you track us down just to make a scene? That's honestly pathetic."

She'd misunderstood, but with the divorce papers arriving any day now, I didn't see the point in correcting her.

Sienna wasn't finished. Something sharp and ugly moved through her expression.

"Since you insist on getting in the way, let's just see who he picks."

Before I could process what she meant, she shoved me—hard.

I stumbled backward, my heel catching on the edge of the stone fire pit behind me.

I fell directly onto the metal grate, and the pain that tore through my hand was immediate and blinding.

I cried out before I could stop myself.

The sound carried across the gathering, and several people nearby turned to look.

Nathan heard it too. He turned, saw me collapsed against the fire pit clutching my hand, and his expression shifted—just for a second, he started moving toward me.

Then he saw Sienna standing beside me, cradling her own wrist with a pained expression on her face.

"What happened to your arm?"

He changed direction immediately, crossing to her side and reaching for her hand.

Sienna bit her lip, the picture of innocent confusion.

"I'm not sure. She just stumbled backward on her own. I tried to catch her, but I scraped my wrist on the grate."

Nathan's expression softened instantly. He lifted her wrist gently and examined the faint red mark across her skin.

Then he looked at me, and every trace of warmth disappeared. His voice turned cold.

"There's a limit to jealousy. I actually thought you'd matured past this, and then you pull something like this to make Sienna look bad."

"Apologize to her. Right now. Or I'm putting you on the next flight out tonight."

I pressed my burned hand against my chest, the pain making it hard to breathe, let alone speak.

Nathan took my silence as defiance.

"Don't think playing the victim is going to get you any sympathy. This whole situation is your fault."

He was opening his mouth to say something else when a young man in his mid-twenties came towards me, holding a large envelope.

"Mrs. Sinclair? Your divorce certificate arrived."

Nathan left without finishing whatever he'd been about to say, walking quickly back toward his car.I found out what happened later that week.Sienna had been systematically draining money from Sinclair Group's accounts for months. By the time Nathan's accountant caught it, she'd already transferred close to 30 million dollars and disappeared. The missing funds had triggered a chain reaction—vendors demanding immediate payment, investors pulling out, projects stalling mid-development.Everyone in the company had known how much Nathan trusted her. He'd given her access to nearly everything, which meant any transfer she initiated went through without a second look. She'd managed it all with very little effort.I also learned there had been a chance to stop it.When Sienna tried to move the largest sum, the bank had flagged it for review and sent Nathan an alert. If he'd been checking his email even once a day, he would have seen it in time. But he hadn't been to the office in almost a mo

The man beside me was Adrian Chen—CEO of a tech company that had been competing with Sinclair Group for the past two years. We'd met at an industry conference three weeks ago, right after I'd started my new job, and hit it off immediately over shared frustrations about inefficient project management systems. We'd gotten coffee twice since then, and last week he'd asked me to dinner. I'd said yes. When Nathan saw Adrian, the color drained from his face."You're—"Adrian nodded, his arm still resting casually around my shoulders."Sophie's boyfriend. We've actually met before—last year's tech summit. You were on the panel about startup scaling."Nathan's eyes went wide, then narrowed."You? What gives you the right to be with Sophie?"He was trying to assert dominance, to make Adrian feel small. It didn't work. Adrian's smile stayed easy and unbothered."What gives me the right? The fact that we like each other and chose to spend time together. Does there need to be more than that?""The

It was just after work, and I had plans to meet a friend for drinks. As I walked through the lobby doors, I spotted Nathan standing near the parking garage entrance. He'd lost weight. The man who used to obsess over his appearance was standing there with dark circles under both eyes, looking exhausted and worn down—so much so that for a second I almost didn't recognize him.The moment he saw me, he moved quickly in my direction. Before I could step back, he reached out and grabbed my hand."Sophie, do you really hate me this much? Enough that you won't even reply to a single message?""Do you have any idea what the last few weeks have been like for me?""I'm not making this up. I really do miss you."His voice cracked, and tears started sliding down his face as he spoke. In the past, every time he cried, the sight of it would break me and I'd give in immediately. This time, I just pulled my hand free and kept my expression neutral."I don't hate you."Before any hope could settle in hi

Nathan's voice came through the speaker."Sophie, you've made your point. Can we just stop this now? Please?""I know all of this—the resignation, everything—was because of Sienna. I've already let her go just now. So we're good, right?""I promise, when you come back, I'll not only give you a raise, I'll also—"The director was still sitting beside me in the passenger seat, half-asleep against the window. The second he heard the word raise, his eyes shot open like someone had dumped ice water on him. He sat up, reached over, and grabbed the phone right out of my hand."Forget it—Sophie's already signed with us. We're giving her the best package in the industry. You're not getting her back."Before Nathan could respond, the director ended the call and blocked the number. He hadn't even handed the phone back to me before he slumped against the seat again and passed out.I didn't know whether to laugh or be annoyed. I pulled the phone from his hand and put it in my bag.Nathan and I had

Just as I expected, his composure cracked. He opened his mouth to defend himself, but I already knew what he was going to say, so I kept going."Even if the inn really was fully booked, is this the only place to stay around here?""Do you remember, Nathan, when we went to Portland right after we started dating? We ran into the same problem. Do you remember what you did?""You walked me through half the city looking for a room. I was exhausted, and I told you I didn't mind sleeping on the couch. You said no immediately.""You told me that a man with integrity doesn't put himself in compromising situations that could be misunderstood. You said that until we were married, you would make sure you never crossed a line.""So why are you standing in that compromising situation now?"By the time I finished, Nathan's face had gone completely white."Is there something else you wanted to talk about? I'm happy to keep going."Nathan didn't have an answer. He worked his jaw for a moment, then fina

I didn't see the point in staying any longer, so I turned and walked away, clenching my injured hand. The young man from the inn followed after me, clearly worried."You should really treat that hand. Burns can get infected fast."I shook my head."I have a first aid kit in my room. I'll be fine."Nathan had always been clumsy, constantly scraping his knuckles or burning himself on coffee cups, and after the third or fourth time I'd patched him up, I'd gotten into the habit of carrying first-aid supplies with me wherever I went. Besides, I'd burned myself plenty of times before—back when I was teaching myself to cook the way he liked. The young man looked like he wanted to say something else but held back. When we reached my door, he glanced down the hallway to make sure no one was nearby, then lowered his voice."Look, it's not really my business, but there's something I think you should know.""I saw what happened out there just now. And the timing with the divorce papers—I did that
