The ambulance cut through the rain.

Mom had taken her medicine and was sound asleep.

Rain drummed against the glass. I remembered the first time Derek came to our house. It was a stormy day just like this.

He was scrawny and sun-darkened, half-starved, but his face was full of defiance.

Nobody believed in him. Nobody except my father.

He swore that once he made it, he would repay everything my parents had done for him.

He had made it. And he'd forgotten every word.

The next day, Mom was feeling much better. She held my hand before speaking.

"I want to make you both some of that marinated crab. Derek loves it."

My nose stung. I realized how long it had been since Derek and I last shared a meal.

He was always too busy. Too busy to eat.

But never too busy to help someone else find a stray cat, go to the doctor, or shop for a massage chair.

"Mom, I want to leave him."

Mom cupped my face. Her palm was warm.

"Whatever you decide, I'm with you."

When I went home to get my things, Derek was alone.

"I know you weren't happy about it. I moved them somewhere else."

I nodded and glanced around the room.

Megan's makeup, her slippers, and a half-empty bag of cat food were still there.

She was gone, but her traces were everywhere.

Strangely, I felt completely calm.

I opened the closet and packed my clothes along with all my documents.

At the entryway, he slammed his hand down on the suitcase.

"Where are you going?"

"Derek, we're done."

I looked him in the eye.

"Don't say things you don't mean."

His voice was cold.

"The exhibition is at a critical stage. Pick your timing before you throw a tantrum."

I pulled a pair of pink panties from under the pillow and tossed them at his feet.

"I mean every word."

His expression shifted. He grabbed my wrist.

"She just stayed one night. Nothing happened. Don't make trouble."

I looked at him like I was looking at a stranger.

He let out an irritated sigh.

"Is this about the exhibition? Fine, I'll add your name back. Is that enough?"

I shook my head.

"The exhibition is canceled."

He went still.

"What do you mean?"

"Everything's ready to go and you just cancel it?"

I pulled my hand free.

"They're my father's paintings. I have every right to decide."

I opened the door.

Just then, Megan burst out of the elevator, soaking wet and red-eyed.

"Derek... something's wrong, the warehouse flooded!"

"Mr. Quinn's... Mr. Quinn's exhibition piece... it was moved to the warehouse, and the water ruined it! What do we do?"

Derek's eyes flickered with panic, but he immediately bent down to comfort her.

"It's fine. It's just a painting. Look at you, you're soaking wet."

A buzzing filled my head. I couldn't breathe.

"Why was the painting in the warehouse?"

"Is that how you take care of my father's work? Do you have any idea how valuable that painting is!"

Derek shoved me aside and stepped in front of Megan.

"Isn't this exactly what you wanted? Everyone knows your father's last work is the most valuable. Too bad it's ruined now.

"Keep this up, and you might lose his gallery too."

"Vivian, be smart about this. I'm still willing to help you."

Tears streamed down my face.

He knew I valued my father's paintings more than my own life.

The gallery too. They were my father's life's work.

"Derek, how could you face him?"

His hand paused on Megan's hair. When he spoke, his voice was flat, unreadable.

"I know plenty of artists who can help. After all, you're my fian..."

The lock clicked shut behind me.

Outside, the storm had paused. But inside me, love had given way, and hatred swallowed me whole.

I texted my lawyer right away.

"Get the lawsuit ready."

My stomach dropped.I grabbed Nathan and we rushed to the gallery. When we arrived, the police were already there. They had the intruder contained.I looked closer at the security footage. A figure in black was creeping through the gallery.I couldn't see a face, but the silhouette was eerily familiar. I couldn't place it.The police said the intruder was still inside but hiding somewhere in the building.Whoever it was knew the layout well.A thought flashed through my mind. I went straight to the collection room. The second I opened the door, a figure lunged out.Nathan shoved me aside, shielding me with his body. A knife caught his arm, slicing it open.Ignoring the wound, he tackled the intruder to the ground. He pulled back the hood.Megan's face stared back at me.She screamed."This is all your fault. I can't find a job! I have nowhere to live!""I hate you, Vivian."I looked at her coldly, remembering the day she'd first joined the company.I'd wanted to mentor her, treated her

Two weeks later, I officially reclaimed the gallery.I went through every one of my father's paintings and put them back in order. This time, Nathan didn't ask me to come work with him.He knew I would never depend on anyone again.Still, it was thanks to his help that my father's exhibition went ahead as planned. On opening day, the turnout was huge.Industry professionals came out to show their support.Old friends of my father's.Former apprentices. And young artists who came to study his work.Seeing his paintings so well received, Mom and I were deeply moved. As the museum closed for the evening, I spotted a blurred figure not far from the entrance.A silhouette I could trace with my eyes closed. But he didn't dare come any closer. He stood under a sycamore tree across the street, soaked in the fading light. My hand paused on the lock. I didn't go to him.I locked the door, turned, and walked toward Nathan.Ten years. From eighteen to twenty-eight.The man I'd walked beside for a

"It's not possible... it's not possible..."Derek's eyes glazed over as the words sank in.He started muttering to himself.I opened the door and got out.A fine drizzle was falling. The forecast said the typhoon was almost over. I stepped out and realized I hadn't brought an umbrella.I was about to head inside when an umbrella appeared over my head.I looked up. Nathan was standing there, holding the umbrella with a goofy grin."What are you doing here?"I was surprised."Come with me. I have something to show you."Half-skeptical, I followed him to a private art museum. The spacious venue was set up and ready. My father's final work and the two paintings Derek had used as collateral hung in the most prominent positions.I walked over and stood before them for a long time. Not until my eyes had blurred did I turn to him and say thank you. While Derek had been busy with Megan's mother, I'd already quietly moved the paintings to Nathan. Thanks to him, my father's life's work was safe.

Three days later, I had just stepped out of my new apartment when I saw Derek. His eyes were bloodshot. He charged at me, grabbed my arm, and dragged me into his car."Vivian, ten years together, and you're really going to end it like this?""You're pushing me off a cliff."He scowled, his voice dripping with resentment, as if everyone else was to blame.I looked at him and almost laughed."Save the feelings talk. If you want to cut your losses, figure out how to get those paintings back."He slammed the steering wheel."Everything I've done these years, hasn't it been for your father and for you? Keeping this whole thing afloat, you think that's been easy?"I'd thought that with everything out in the open, if he just admitted what he'd done, I wouldn't push any further. But even now, he was playing the victim. When my father entrusted the gallery to him, it had been running perfectly. Now it had deteriorated to the point where he was pawning paintings to keep it afloat. And on top of

"She... she doesn't have a key."Derek stammered. I smiled."Then go get one. I've got all day."Megan left reluctantly.Derek took my hand."I told you, just leave it to me. If you've got time, you could go look at wedding dresses. Or rings."I stared at him. The audacity was almost laughable."Derek, you still think I'm going to marry you?"The smile froze on his face. His Adam's apple bobbed."I know you're still angry. I've sent Megan and her family away.""Your father's painting, I've had someone restore it.""Just give me a chance to make it right, okay?"I pulled my hand away. His hung in the air.Megan came running back with the key and placed it in Derek's hand.I stepped back and waited for him to open the door.He hesitated, still trying to stall, then turned back to me."Viv, maybe another day. It's all dusty..."I snatched the key and threw the door open.I hit the light switch. The room flooded with light. My fists clenched. I walked to where the two paintings should have

When we returned to the hospital after lunch, Derek was there. He stood by Mom's bed. A fruit basket and a bouquet of lilies sat on the nightstand. The moment I saw the lilies, I rushed over and threw them in the trash outside the door."What are you doing here, Derek?""My mother is allergic to lilies. She just started getting better, and you're trying to make her sick again?"I hissed.Nathan called for a doctor to check on Mom.Mom's face was white as a sheet. Tears fell before I could stop them.Thankfully, there was no real harm done.Derek pulled me out of the room and softened his voice."Vivian, I really forgot. It's my fault. Completely my fault.""And about your father's painting. I already chewed Megan out. I told everyone involved in the exhibition.""No one else will ever set foot in your father's collection room again, okay?"I watched him coldly. His sincerity was flawless. A perfect act.So I tested him."I want to see the rest of Dad's paintings."Cold sweat beaded on
