Chapter 2

Author: Yanyan Strives
Leon didn't come back that night. In the morning, I went to the east wing for my tools. A servant lowered her head. "Ms. Ricci moved in last night."

When I'd first moved into the Vistari estate six years ago, Leon had set aside a room in the east wing for me. Even after I started sharing the main bedroom with him, I'd kept my sketches, books, and conservation bench there.

I opened the side door. The room looked completely different.

The curtains were now Catherine's favorite color. Her dresses filled the closet. My easel had been taken apart and propped up in the hall. A few cardboard boxes were piled by the door. The top one was marked TO BE DISCARDED.

I opened a box. My mother's letters, my notebooks, old photographs, and tools had all been shoved in together. Even my mother's last painting had a deep crease across it.

My hand went still.

I'd moved many times since losing my mother, but I'd always packed that painting myself. It was her last piece, the only thing I could still touch that had truly belonged to her.

Now a crease cut across its center. I was afraid to touch it with my injured hand. A little too much pressure, and it might tear right through.

Catherine came out of the room and immediately looked apologetic. "Leon said this wasn't your bedroom anymore. I haven't been sleeping well, and he thought the east wing would be quiet. If it bothers you, Isabella, I'll move out right away."

She said she would leave, but the moment Leon appeared, she looked ready to cry. "It's my fault. I didn't know this room meant so much to Isabella."

Leon glanced at the boxes, then frowned at me. "It's an empty room. If she likes it, let her have it. Just put your things away."

As though refusing would make me a terrible person.

Trembling, I lifted the painting. "This was the last thing my mother ever painted!"

Leon froze. He stared at the crease for a few seconds, then told a servant to find the best conservator available.

I looked down at my bandaged hand. For a moment, I couldn't speak.

I was a conservator. But because of an injury that never should have happened, I couldn't even hold a scalpel steady, let alone restore the last thing my mother had left me.

My palm throbbed. But it wasn't my hand that really hurt. It was my heart.

Behind Leon, satisfaction flickered in Catherine's eyes.

She held up an old pocket watch. "Is this yours, too? Leon said I could take anything I liked. You don't mind me taking this one, do you?"

I went still for a moment.

It was the first thing I'd ever repaired for Leon, six years ago.

A fall had damaged its gears. I'd spent two weeks fixing it, but when I gave it back, he'd placed it in my palm again. "Whoever fixes it gets to keep it."

Later, I'd found L&I engraved inside the back cover, along with the date we'd first met.

It wasn't just a pocket watch. He'd given it to me as a token of his love when he first made our relationship public.

In front of the Vistari family, he'd said that as long as I had it, no one could take my place at his side.

For six years, I'd carried it to every important party. When people called me "Leon's woman," the watch had even made me feel secure.

I'd thought I would keep it for the rest of my life.

Now I barely glanced at it. "Take it. I don't want it anymore."

Catherine looked startled, then began fiddling with it. A moment later, it slipped from her hands. The glass shattered, and the mechanism fell out. She stepped back and brought her heel down on it, crushing the gears.

Her eyes filled with tears. "I didn't mean to break it." She sounded sincere, but the look she gave me was a challenge.

Leon hurried over and hugged her. "Don't blame yourself. I'll have it fixed."

Once, losing that watch for even a few minutes would have sent me searching everywhere for it in a panic. This time, I just looked at it on the floor. "It's broken. Throw it away. Don't bother fixing it."

Leon looked surprised. He knew how much I'd treasured it. What he didn't understand was that I'd never loved the watch itself. I'd loved the promise it stood for: no one could replace me.

Later, a servant brought me an almost identical antique pocket watch. Leon had sent someone to find it, she said.

I threw it in the trash, box and all.

Some broken things could be replaced.

But some things broke so completely that they weren't worth repairing.

A year later, I was officially running the Bennett Foundation's art conservation center.Once the altarpiece I'd restored went back on display, I was invited to present my complete treatment plan at an international art conservation conference. When I finished, someone in the audience called me a master conservator.Standing under the lights, I suddenly remembered the woman I'd been. The one who couldn't even hold on to her own room.Back then, I'd thought nothing could make me prouder than being a powerful man's first priority. Now I knew my own name was worth remembering, all on its own.We set the wedding for autumn.Samuel didn't turn it into a celebration of the Aldini family's victory over the Vistari family. He asked what I wanted first, whether it was the venue, the guests, the ceremony, or even where we'd live afterward. One day, I deliberately asked what he'd do if we wanted different things. He just smiled. "Then we'll do it your way."Looking at him, I felt at peace.I wasn

After I became the foundation's lead conservator, Leon finally saw me again at a museum gala.People kept coming over to greet me. They wanted to discuss projects and arrange to have pieces from their collections conserved.Leon kept his distance from the crowd.Six years ago, I was used to standing behind him at every Vistari party. Now, watching me from a distance, he finally understood. I'd built a whole life, and I didn't need him in it.Samuel was there, too, but he didn't hover. He knew I didn't need someone keeping everyone else away from me.Near the end of the evening, Leon finally came over. He'd lost weight, and the dark circles under his eyes made it clear he still wasn't sleeping.I'd heard how badly he'd been doing since I left. He drank day and night and neglected the family business. The board had reprimanded him several times. Samuel had even taken the East Harbor docks from him. After a long silence, he asked hoarsely, "If I'd saved you first that day, would things be

When Leon reopened the investigation, everything Catherine had done quickly came out. She'd copied Isabella's access credentials and leaked the North Harbor route. After Marianne confessed, Catherine had arranged for the whip to be switched to silence the only person who might retract her confession. On the day of the cremation, she hadn't had a panic attack at all. She'd deliberately called Leon away from Isabella. When the evidence was presented to the council, Catherine clutched her chest as she always did and said she couldn't breathe. Before, that look would have brought Leon straight to her side. This time, no one paid her any attention. No one stopped the meeting because she was frightened.Catherine panicked. Crying, she said she'd only done it because she loved Leon too much. Then she said none of it would have happened if it hadn't been for Isabella. But this time, no one gave in.That day, Leon revoked all her privileges within the family. He also stripped her of the trust b

After Isabella left, Leon didn't return to his bedroom all night. He sat alone in the east wing, staring at the empty room. He kept picturing her at her conservation bench, and each time, the pain hit him all over again. At the Vistari family meeting the next day, a manager held up an old harbor agreement. "Don, should we have Ms. Bennett look at this first, as usual?"Without thinking, Leon said, "Have her—"He stopped midsentence. The room went quiet. The manager spoke softly. "I'm sorry, Don. I forgot for a moment. Ms. Bennett has left the estate."Leon stared at the agreement, feeling hollow inside.Six years earlier, he'd won the South Harbor warehouses back from his uncle because Isabella had spent three straight nights restoring a water-damaged deed.Between its layers, she'd found the inheritance clause every lawyer had missed. She'd helped him reclaim his most important property.Later, someone had tried to fool him with a forged 100-year-old contract. Isabella had noticed tha

Samuel surveyed the entrance as he got out. Bodyguards from both families crowded around the gates of the Vistari estate."Well. Six years, and this is the welcome I get?" Then he looked straight at me. "Isabella. Still beautiful, but you look so frail. Is this how Leon's been taking care of you?"Leon glared at him. "Who invited you? You're not welcome here. Get him out."I stepped up beside Samuel. "Don't you dare. I invited him."Six years ago, they'd nearly come to blows over me at a party. Six years later, they were facing each other over me again."If it weren't for Isabella, I wouldn't come here even if you begged me." Samuel gave a dismissive laugh, then turned to me. "Your things are packed. Go ahead and get in the car."Leon caught my hand. "She's my girlfriend. She's not going anywhere with you.""Let go. We're over."Samuel pried Leon's hand off mine and stepped between us. "She said she's coming with me. Are you deaf?"Leon glared at him. "This is between us. Stay out of i

That day, I sent Samuel a message."Does our marriage agreement still stand?"He replied almost immediately. "Congratulations, Isabella. You've made the right choice."Leon dealt with whoever had switched the whip. He told me he'd arrange Marianne's cremation and funeral himself. He'd be there with me to say goodbye.I didn't refuse.Marianne had died in my place. All I could do now was give her a dignified farewell. But then Catherine called, crying. "Leon, watching her get whipped triggered another panic attack. I'm so scared. Will you come stay with me?"He looked at me, torn. "Go ahead without me. I'll come as soon as I've dealt with this." Once again, he left me for Catherine.I was eerily calm. After enough disappointments, even the pain went quiet.Shortly after the cremation paperwork was completed, a staff member came over and told me there'd been a mix-up with the body's ID number.Another family had collected Marianne's urn. They'd left two hours earlier to scatter the ashes
