CHAPTER 1

I had spent three years wondering what it would take for my husband to choose me.

Tonight, I finally found out.

And I almost wished I hadn't.

My wrists were tied so tightly behind my back that my fingers had gone numb. Blood had dried at the corner of my mouth. The warehouse stank of rust and gasoline.

Across the concrete, Victoria Laurent was crying.

Beautiful tears. Perfect tears. Not one of them had touched her mascara.

I knew her too well to believe them.

A gun was pressed to her temple, yet she looked at Adrian as if the rest of the world had stopped existing. As if he had always belonged to her.

Maybe he had. Maybe I was the only fool who never accepted it.

The warehouse door opened, and Adrian walked in.

My husband wore a black suit torn at the shoulder, blood running down his temple. For the first time in three years, Adrian Blackwood, the cold, untouchable billionaire, looked afraid.

Not for himself.

I knew exactly who he was afraid for.

It wasn't me.

He stood between us, looking at the men surrounding Victoria. His eyes moved across the room, but they never stopped on me.

I waited for him to notice the blood on my face. To see my tied hands. To look at me and realize that his wife was sitting on the dirty floor, just as terrified as the woman he had come to save.

He didn't.

My chest tightened, but I swallowed the feeling. Even then, I found myself making excuses for him.

Perhaps he hadn't seen me properly.

Perhaps he would look at me in a moment.

"Choose," the man in the middle said.

Adrian's head snapped toward him. "What?"

"One woman walks out of here tonight." The man smiled. "The other one doesn't."

Victoria screamed his name.

My husband flinched.

I didn't. I had watched him run to her too many times.

"Adrian, please!" Victoria cried.

He turned toward her immediately.

"Please don't let them hurt me."

"I won't," he said.

Two words.

I couldn't remember the last time he had made me a promise and kept it.

The man raised his gun slightly. "You have a choice to make. Your wife or her."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

I looked at Adrian, searching his face for something I could hold on to.

Three years.

I had spent anniversaries alone. I had sat at candlelit tables for a man who never came. I had forgiven the late nights. The lies. The messages he forgot to delete. The photographs.

Four times I had forgiven him.

Four times I had promised myself it would be the last.

Tonight was the fifth.

And some small, stupid part of me still believed that when it truly mattered, when it was life or death, he would choose me.

I couldn't have begged him even if I'd wanted to. The night of the accident, his car, his hands on the wheel, her name lighting up his phone, took my voice, and it never came back.

So I did the only thing I could.

I looked at him.

Adrian looked back.

For one tiny, stupid second, hope rose in my chest.

Then his eyes slid to Victoria.

"Please, Adrian," she sobbed.

His jaw tightened. He closed his eyes.

"Victoria."

One word.

Everything inside me went quiet. Not because it hurt, though it did. Because I wasn't surprised.

Somewhere deep down, I had always known the answer.

I just hadn't known how loud it would be.

Adrian took a step toward her.

"Let her go."

The man glanced at me. "And your wife?"

Adrian said nothing.

I waited for him to correct the man. To tell him he wasn't leaving without me.

Instead, Adrian reached for Victoria.

He never looked back at me.

Not once.

I watched him pull her into his arms. She clung to him, burying her face against his chest, and he held her as if nothing else in the room mattered.

I was still sitting on the floor.

Still tied up.

Still his wife.

Yet he left me there without a second thought.

Something in me broke, but I didn't let myself cry. I had cried over Adrian too many times. I wasn't going to give him another tear, even if he would never know what it cost me to hold them back.

So I stopped waiting for him to.

Behind my back, my fingertips brushed something rough. The rope. A frayed edge, so small I almost missed it.

I pulled. Pain tore through my wrists. I pulled again.

Across the room, Victoria's eyes flicked to the man holding her. Only for a second. It wasn't the look of a hostage watching her captor.

It was the look of a woman checking the time.

I didn't understand it then.

The rope snapped.

I scooped up a fistful of dust and, when the nearest guard turned, threw it straight into his eyes.

He roared.

I ran.

"GET HER!"

A shot cracked behind me. I didn't look back. I ran through the cold night, up a rusted stairway and across an open platform, with my lungs on fire, because stopping meant dying.

They had taken my bag. They had never checked my coat.

My phone was still in my pocket, and my thumb found his name without my eyes.

Ethan.

He answered on the first ring. "Elena?"

I opened my mouth.

Nothing.

Years of silence closed around my throat like a hand. All I had was a ragged, broken sound, the only voice the accident had left me.

"Elena. Where are you? Talk to me."

I couldn't. I could only breathe into the phone and let him hear me running.

"Okay," he said, and his voice went steady, the way it always did when I was falling apart. "Okay. Stay on the line. I'm coming. Don't hang up."

Footsteps pounded behind me. Closer.

My foot hit slick metal.

The world tilted.

My hand grabbed for the railing and found only air, and suddenly there was nothing beneath me but the night.

The phone spun out of my fingers, its screen glowing in the dark. A voice was still shouting from it, over and over.

My name.

Not from my husband.

From the one man who had never once made me beg to be chosen.

I tried to say his name. I tried with everything I had left.

Only breath came out.

Then the ground rushed up to meet me, and the dark closed in, and one last thought rose through it, clear and quiet and certain.

Maybe losing Adrian Blackwood wasn't the end of my story.

Maybe it was the moment my real life began.

I just didn't know that yet.
