Chapter 3

Author: Liora Z
The next day, I went back to the gallery to hand over my work.

James sought me out and handed me a beautifully wrapped black-and-gold box.

"Finn's birthday present. I forgot to give it to him yesterday."

I paused, took it, and opened it.

It was a ruby carved in the shape of an eagle.

An eagle—the one thing my son was terrified of.

When Finn was five, James took him to patrol the territory. Halfway through, James ran into an old acquaintance and let go of Finn's hand.

My little boy got lost in the woods. When he was finally found, he was cowering under a tree, trembling in fear of a hawk circling above him.

Since then, birds of prey had been his worst nightmare.

And the man responsible for that trauma was giving him one as a gift.

I didn't know if I was more angry or disappointed. I casually set the box aside.

"Thanks," I said, my voice completely flat.

James gave me a weird look, then remembered something else.

"Elsa's coffin is broken. I'm letting her stay in the master bedroom for now."

"Take the day off. Go home, pack a bag, and take Finn to the city apartment for a few days."

His words landed like a sledgehammer against my chest.

I stared at him in disbelief. "Are you saying you're kicking me and your son out for Elsa?"

James frowned. "Don't make it sound so ugly. It's just temporary."

"Since we agreed to keep the Blood Bond a secret, we need to keep our distance in front of the clan."

I smiled. God, it was ironic.

Was it really for the clan? Or did he just feel that a mate and a son were getting in the way of his new romance?

I looked away, sick of the sight of him.

"Understood. I'll pack and get my son out of your hair immediately. We won't be a bother."

I was leaving anyway. A few days early didn't matter.

James seemed stunned by how easily I agreed.

He opened his mouth, his tone softening slightly. "I'll give you a few famous paintings to make up for it."

I didn't look up. I just stayed silent.

The damage was done. No amount of compensation could cover it up.

When I got back to the estate, I packed our bags and took Finn to the door.

Just as I pushed it open, I ran straight into James walking in with Elsa.

He was ordering the blood thralls to bring her luggage in. Looking at the bags piling up in the grand hall, I thought to myself: Temporary? It looked like she was moving in for good.

When our eyes met, I clearly caught a flash of panic in his gaze.

Elsa let out a surprised gasp. "Ms. Marlene? What are you doing in the Prince's estate?"

I immediately pulled my son behind me, shielding him from her view.

"I..."

"She's just a clan member who needed a favor. We were just discussing business."

James cut me off before I could even start.

My hands balled into fists.

It wasn't the first time he’d denied us. But every single time, it felt like a knife to the heart.

I was about to speak, but Finn beat me to it.

"Good day, Your Highness."

I snapped my head around, only to see my son's red, teary eyes.

"Mom, let's go."

Every word I wanted to say died in my throat. I forced a small smile. "Okay."

As we brushed past him, James grabbed my arm.

New York.Today was Finn's first day of school.I woke up early to help him put on his daylight amulet, a magical artifact that protected him from the sun.Though we had only been in New York for two days, I had been planning this for months.Half a year ago, I reached out to a human friend living here. I asked him to help me secure a UV-proof apartment and find an open-minded school. At first, I didn't plan on leaving so soon; I just liked to have backup plans.Looking back, I was grateful for that habit.I also had to thank James. For all his faults, he was never stingy with his wealth during our time as mates. After watching Finn get on the school bus, I pulled my coat tighter and turned to head back inside.A familiar voice stopped me cold."Freya."I turned around stiffly. It was James. He looked paler than usual, but he was still devastatingly handsome. That was exactly how he’d fooled me back then.No one knew this, but before that night, I had harbored a secret crush on James f

James’s grip on his phone tightened until his knuckles turned white. He almost laughed out loud.Since when did Freya have a husband in New York?He was about to snap, but the little kid's voice came through the line again."Grandpa, come watch TV with me!"Marcus's voice softened instantly. "I'm coming, buddy. Just let Grandpa finish this call, okay?"It was that natural, unconditional gentleness a guardian has for their child.James stood frozen, listening to the phone, and uncontrollably thought of Finn again. He had a perfect family, too.But it seemed he had completely thrown them away.James sat on the cold stone steps of his estate all night. It was the most pathetic he had ever felt. Before, no matter how late he came home, there was always calming incense burning for him. There was always someone sitting quietly on the couch, waiting for him. Now, there was nothing.Just him, alone in a massive manor, waiting for the sun to rise. The next morning, James didn't even change his

Terrified that Elsa would embarrass him further, James avoided joining any other discussions for the rest of the night. He gave short, polite answers to anyone who approached him.The rest of the time, he sat in a dark corner, downing glass after glass of blood. When the banquet finally ended, he said his brief goodbyes and practically fled the venue.By the time he returned to the estate, he was completely exhausted. He rubbed his temples, pushed open the heavy doors, and called out out of habit:"Freya, light the incense."Silence echoed through the hall.James looked up at the dark, empty manor, and it finally hit him.She and Finn had left yesterday. He turned on the lights and went down to the cellar. As he pulled a blood bag from the fridge, he noticed that the cellar door was covered in little stickers. They were mostly human cartoon characters Finn loved.Looking at the childish stickers he used to find so annoying, James actually let out a soft laugh. He suddenly pictured Finn

At 6 PM, James brought Elsa to a banquet hosted by the Coven Elders. He hadn't caught Freya's scent in a full day. Standing there with his wine glass, he was entirely distracted.Did I go too far this time? The thought kept creeping into his head.James pressed his lips together and downed the glass of blood in one gulp.He pulled out his phone, planning to text her, when Elder Thorne approached."Prince James. Regarding the territory divisions from last time..."James snapped out of his daze, shifting instantly into business mode.Just as the conversation was flowing smoothly, a jarring voice cut in."Your Highness, do you like my dress?"Elsa spun around in a crimson gown, batting her eyelashes with exaggerated innocence. The interruption soured the mood immediately. But Elsa couldn't read the room. She giggled and squeezed her way to James, her clumsy movements knocking into both his and the Elder's glasses.Caught off guard, James was splashed with precious blood and shattered glas

Seeing the bold letters on the screen, a bad feeling settled in his gut.Just as he was about to open it, Elsa strutted into the office."Your Highness, here's the contract with the human corporation you asked for."She dropped the file on his desk and casually walked up to him, resting a hand on his shoulder. In the past, he entertained this unspoken flirtation. Now, the heavy perfume on her skin just made him nauseous. He sat up straight and flipped the folder open. One page in, his brow furrowed. The entire document was a mess. Aside from the formatting, almost nothing was right. She had even gotten the blood-type supply codes wrong—an embarrassingly stupid mistake. He slammed the folder onto the desk, his voice freezing cold."Who drafted this? Do you lack basic working competence?"Elsa's face drained of color. "I... I did it, Your Highness."All of his anger suddenly fizzled out into pure exhaustion.James looked at the terrified Elsa, feeling truly helpless for the first time.H

He stared at me in shock. "What did Finn... just call me?"I smiled. It felt like a sick joke."Isn't this exactly what you wanted, Your Highness?"For six years of our secret bond, James hadn't just hidden us away. He had never once allowed Finn to call him Father. The only difference was, in the past, he forced Finn to call him Your Highness. Now, Finn was drawing the line himself.I looked down and tried to yank my arm away, but his grip was like iron.James looked at me, his eyes filled with complex emotions."Give me a few days.""I'll explain things to Finn."I reminded him coldly, "Elsa is waiting for you. Let go."James seemed to suddenly remember where he was and slowly, reluctantly released me.I scoffed, taking Finn's hand to leave. But James suddenly called out, "Wait."He ran to the cellar and brought back a vial of premium, dark crimson blood, handing it to Finn."Happy birthday, Finn."Elsa chimed in from the side, smiling. "His Highness spent a fortune buying that for m
