Chapter 3

Author: Andy
"Natalie, are you going to apologize or not?"

Derek seemed to have run out of patience. He looked at me coldly.

I bit down on my lip until I tasted blood.

"I'll say it one more time. I didn't push her, and I'm not apologizing."

Crystal scoffed and turned toward the door.

"Fine. I'm leaving. I'm done with school."

"Crystal!"

The shout left my mouth before I could stop it.

Less than a hundred days until the SATs. How could she gamble with her own future like this?

Derek grabbed Crystal's arm and turned on me with a roar.

"Natalie, are you determined to ruin your daughter's future?

"Over a stupid bottle of perfume, you're willing to sacrifice her SATs?"

Candy dabbed at her eyes with a performance worthy of an award.

"Derek, Crystal, stop fighting. It's all my fault.

"She doesn't like me. I'll leave. Please don't let me come between you."

She made a move toward the door, but Derek caught her and held on tight.

"Candy, don't go. You're not the one who should be leaving today."

Derek turned to me, his gaze dark and menacing.

"Natalie, if you can't stand having Candy here, then get out."

I froze.

"You're telling me to leave?"

"That's right. Get out and cool off. Come back when you've come to your senses."

Crystal backed him up.

"Exactly, Mom. You're terrifying right now, acting like some kind of lunatic.

"Go stay somewhere else for a few days. You're ruining my study time."

I looked at the two people closest to me in this world, and the cold that had been building inside me swallowed me whole.

Without a word, I walked into the bedroom and packed a few things.

On my way through the living room, I caught Candy sitting on the couch, watching me with a smirk.

"Bye-bye, lady. Don't let the door hit you."

I didn't acknowledge her. I walked straight out.

Out on the street, the cold wind hit me, and it dawned on me that I had nowhere to go.

I checked into a cheap motel, my mind a complete mess.

The next morning, I went to the bank.

I had to find out exactly how much money Derek had spent on that woman.

When the teller handed me the transaction history, I felt the ground drop out from under me.

He'd actually cashed out our $150,000 certificate of deposit early!

Every last dollar had been transferred to an account under the name "Candy Shaw."

I dialed Derek's number like a woman possessed.

"Derek, where is the $150,000 from our savings? What did you do with the money?"

On the other end, Derek sounded perfectly calm.

"I invested it."

"Invested it? You gave it to Candy? Have you lost your mind?"

"Natalie, stop with the hysterics.

"Candy knows someone with a great business opportunity. We put the money in, and it'll double in a few months.

"What would a housewife like you know? Don't mess this up for me."

I was trembling with fury.

"Get that money back now! That's Crystal's college fund!"

Candy's voice suddenly came through the phone.

"Oh, relax, lady. Don't be so stingy.

"Derek is doing this for the family. Once it doubles, you think Crystal won't have tuition money?

"Besides, Derek is a shareholder in my company now. The money's already invested. You can't just take it back."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Derek, you went behind my back and started a company with her?"

Derek cut me off, irritated.

"Enough. Stop nagging. I'm busy.

"You'd better behave and stay out of my way."

The line went dead.

I slumped into a chair at the bank, feeling like the whole world was spinning.

What was happening? Had Derek actually lost his mind?

"Ms. Wells, here's the marketing proposal for next quarter. It's ready for your review."My assistant placed a polished folder on my desk.I nodded, opened the folder, and began reading through it carefully.Three years had passed since that circus of a divorce. After selling the apartment, I used the proceeds as seed money and went back to work. I started my own PR firm.In those three years, I poured every ounce of energy into the business. The company went from barely scraping by to earning a solid reputation in the industry.I was no longer the housewife whose whole life revolved around the stove, pinching pennies over every grocery bill.I was Natalie Wells, founder and CEO."The proposal is thorough, but the budget needs trimming."I circled a few items with a red pen and handed it back."Right away, Ms. Wells. I'll have the strategy team revise it."She took the folder and left the office.I leaned back in my chair and rubbed my aching temples. My phone buzzed on the desk.It wa

"Ms. Wells, here's the latest appraisal for your property."The real estate agent handed me a folder with a polished smile.I took it and skimmed the contents. The apartment that had housed over a decade of my marriage was now listed for sale.I never wanted to set foot in a place steeped in such sickening memories again."Sell it quickly. I can come down a little on price, but I'll only accept an all-cash offer."The agent nodded. "Absolutely. It's a great location. We'll have a buyer in no time."After handling the apartment, I went to the prison where Derek was being held.Derek had been sentenced to five years.Through the glass partition, he looked ten years older than he had in the courtroom. His once immaculate hair was now a buzz cut, threaded with gray.He picked up the phone. His hand was shaking."Natalie... you came to see me."His voice was so hoarse it was barely audible.I watched him, expressionless."I just wanted to see what you look like now. A pathetic, beaten-down

"This court hereby rules on the divorce petition filed by the plaintiff, Natalie Wells, against the defendant, Derek Harper..."The judge's solemn voice echoed through the courtroom.I sat at the plaintiff's table and watched Derek on the other side with calm, steady eyes.He was gaunt, almost unrecognizable. His eyes were sunken, his jaw dark with stubble, and every trace of his former arrogance was gone."The defendant, Derek Harper, engaged in adultery and the deliberate concealment and transfer of marital assets during the marriage."The ruling is as follows: the divorce petition of the plaintiff, Natalie Wells, is granted."All assets transferred by the defendant shall be returned in full to the plaintiff."Given the defendant's misconduct, all remaining marital property, including the apartment and savings, is awarded to the plaintiff, Natalie Wells."The defendant, Derek Harper, shall walk away from the marriage with nothing."The gavel came down. It was final.I let out a long,

"Mom, help me! The police arrested me!"On the final night of the three-day deadline, I got a desperate call from Crystal. Her voice was thick with terror and despair. My heart seized."Crystal, where are you? What happened?""I'm at the South Precinct... Candy took me to a bar, and then... then everything went wrong..."Crystal was sobbing so hard she could barely get the words out.I grabbed a cab and rushed to the station.Outside the interview room, I found Derek, who had arrived just as frantically. When he saw me, he latched on like I was his last hope."Natalie, thank God you're here! You have to do something. Save Crystal!"I regarded him coldly."What happened?"Derek stammered and couldn't string together a coherent answer. An officer came over, giving us a stern look."Are you Crystal Harper's parents?"What kind of parenting is this? Your daughter's about to take the SATs, and you let her go to a place like that!"She may have been involved in a bar fight and used illegal d

"Ms. Wells, I have the evidence."The private investigator handed me a thick envelope.I tore it open.Inside were the fraudulent financial records of Derek's shell company. There were also payment receipts showing he had bought Candy a car and an apartment. There were even screenshots from hotel security footage showing the two of them checking in together. My hands trembled as I looked at the irrefutable proof.Derek, you really were ruthless. To make me walk away with nothing, you actually built this entire scheme.I delivered the evidence to Mr. Crawford immediately. After reviewing everything, Mr. Crawford smiled with satisfaction."Ms. Wells, with this evidence, we can not only recover your share of the marital assets,"we can also make him pay for concealing assets and committing adultery."I exhaled deeply. "You think your little scheme was foolproof?"I fought through the searing pain in my palm and stared Derek down."That $150,000. You really think you can wave it away with the word 'investment'?"A flicker of unease crossed Derek's face, but he composed himself quickly."I told you it's an investment. If you don't believe me, go ahead and check."Do whatever you want. This divorce is happening."I didn't waste my breath arguing.I turned, went into the bedroom, and packed my personal belongings as fast as I could. As I dragged my suitcase to the front door, Crystal suddenly stepped in my path."Mom, are you really leaving?"For the first time, something like panic flickered in her eyes.I looked at this girl I had carried for nine months and raised for eighteen years."Crystal, you're on your own now."I pushed past her and walked out of that place I had once called home without looking back. The day after I moved into a rental apartment, I called a divorce attorney, Michael Crawford.
