Chapter 5

Author: Sinclair
At St. Anne's Children's Hospital, the doctors treated Lily's wound again. She kept crying from the pain, and I leaned down so she could see me.

"Mom's here, sweetheart. Hang on just a little longer. I'm staying right here."

Only after she fell asleep with my sleeve in her fist did I let myself sit down. The doctor scheduled a follow-up and told me to watch for fever and worsening pain. Her admission to the rehab center would have to wait.

I had to get her out of that house. Ethan was covering the hospital bills, but renting an accessible apartment, moving, and hiring help all meant immediate expenses. The property hadn't been divided yet, and I didn't have much in savings that I could access right away.

For years, I had lent part of what I earned to my mother for repairs on her house, and the rest went to my sister's mortgage and Owen's expenses. Every time I thought about stopping, my mother asked how I could abandon my own widowed sister.

Ethan messaged to say he would pay, and that I should come home so the family could sit down and talk it through.

I looked at the words on the screen, typed "Lily's been badly hurt again," waited a few seconds, and deleted all of it.

He'd been standing right there the whole time.

I called Noah Collins. He heard something in my voice and asked at once what had happened.

"I need to borrow money from you." I gave him the figure. "And I need a short-term accessible apartment. I'll write you an IOU and pay it back on schedule."

He agreed to the loan and found the apartment as well. We set the repayment date, and then he arranged a car and took Lily and me there.

Once we'd brought our things inside, he set out the food he had brought and told me to eat something. I was about to shake my head, but then I smelled the hot soup and remembered that I hadn't eaten all day.

"Thank you." I picked up a fork and hesitated. "Noah, I can't feel the same way about you right now."

"I know." He glanced toward the bedroom and lowered his voice. "I'm glad you felt you could ask me for help. But helping you doesn't mean I expect you to feel the same way about me. I won't hold this over you."

I lowered my head and took a couple of bites, finally accepting his help.

He pushed a tablet across to me. On the screen were the medical illustrations I had drawn before I married. His company was putting together materials on children's rehabilitation and needed someone to turn written instructions into drawings people could follow.

"I've sent you the brief and the rate. If the timing works, try one."

After he left I answered a message from my lawyer, Rachel Morgan, and opened the envelope I had brought from the old house. A photograph slid out onto my knee.

In it I am wrapped in Ethan's coat outside a temporary relief station. That night, after he finished operating, he insisted on taking me back. He zipped the coat up for me, worried I'd be cold on the way.

Ethan lost his parents when he was little. When we married I truly wanted to give him a home, somewhere he could come back to whenever he was worn out.

David is on the other side of the photograph, his arm still wrapped in the bandage I'd put on him. Noah was injured in the same disaster. We'd met while I was helping transfer and care for him. Later, David went back into the danger zone to rescue Ethan and never returned.

After the funeral both of us wanted to take care of Vivian and Owen. I always bought extra when I shopped and helped with whatever Owen needed. It never occurred to me that Lily would end up paying that debt.

In the photograph, Ethan's hand is on my shoulder. I stared at the picture for a long time. When a tear landed on it, I pulled out a tissue and hurried to wipe it away.

After that, Ethan came when he said he would. He traded shifts ahead of time and helped care for Lily and take her to follow-up appointments. When one of her assistive devices needed attention, he contacted the person responsible, then let me know what had been done.At first, Lily worried he wouldn't come, so I wrote the agreed dates down for her. He showed up on time, once, then again. If anything changed, he told her ahead of time.I kept working as a medical illustrator while Lily drew her favorite animals beside me. Sometimes she filled a whole sketchbook and still didn't want to stop. I looked at her new drawings with her, and sometimes she complained that I'd made a dolphin too fat.My mother was still in treatment at the psychiatric hospital, and Owen remained in the care of child welfare services while they arranged his next placement. I never again had to cancel something I had promised my daughter because of one of my sister's bills. Before Lily's next birthday she dug out h

Ethan started over with very short visits. Either I or a staff member supervised him the entire time.At first, he didn't even know which side to put Lily's water bottle on. She reached for it twice with her left hand before he hurried to move it closer. He also had someone adjust the wheelchair's cup holder so she could reach it. Once, when he put her sketchbook too high, he came straight back to get it as soon as she called."I'm sorry. Daddy put it in the wrong place."Lily bent over the sketchbook, and he sat beside her and waited while she found the page she wanted. At a rehabilitation session a while later, Lily wore her adjusted brace but stopped after a few steps. Ethan went over and asked her where it hurt.Another parent encouraged her kindly, saying she was doing well and could manage a little more. Lily looked at her father. "Daddy, if I don't walk any more today, will you be angry?"I tightened my grip on the papers, remembering the birthday party and how she'd kept saying

After Ethan served his full two-year sentence, our first meeting was still arranged through the lawyer. It had been about three years since the crash. Lily was almost ten and it was time to adjust her devices again. I walked into the conference room with the cost breakdown. Ethan stood up to pull out a chair for me, then stopped mid-reach and drew his hand back.He handed me a list of his property, cars, and investments and said all of it was going to be sold."I'll keep making the payments we agreed on. The rest will go to you too. I want to give Lily some extra security and buy you both a home that's easier for her to get around in."The lawyer had already itemized what he owed. I read through the list and asked whether what he was handing over was everything he had left."All of it," he said."What do you want me to agree to?"Ethan looked up, and I went on. "If giving us the house and money means I'll still have to do what you say, I won't accept them.""It won't." He turned to the

Ethan heard about the attack from Paul and wrote to ask whether Lily had been hurt and whether she was sleeping at night. At the end of the letter he mentioned Owen and said the agency should handle his placement instead of leaving it to me."I always thought giving Vivian more money meant I was doing right by David. Even when she went too far, I wouldn't admit it. I kept telling you and Lily to give in. I made her think that whatever she did to you, I would fix it for her."I folded the letter. If he had thought that way once in all those years, neither Lily nor I would have had to wait this long.Later, to settle the arrangements for Lily's ongoing care and expenses, I went to see him once. Lily stayed home. When they brought him in I almost didn't recognize him. His hair was short, and he'd lost a lot of weight. The first thing he asked was whether my shoulder had healed."It has.""And Lily?""The scrapes healed. She still cries when a car horn suddenly goes off."He put a hand on

For the next few days, any noise outside the door had Lily calling for me. I moved my computer to the bedside, drew with her during the day, and handled the paperwork that needed to be filed after she was asleep. The police established that my mother had been waiting outside the hospital for more than one day. When she saw us arrive for the appointment she told Vivian she would hold me there. My mother knew my daughter was in that wheelchair, and she heard the child beg her to let go, and she did not let go.An officer asked whether I had anything to add, and I repeated everything my mother had said that day. When I got to "Don't interrupt," I stopped, drank some water, and finished. After my mother was admitted for observation, she sent word that if I admitted I had driven my sister to her death, the family could give me another chance. I didn't go.A few days later the hospital contacted me about her medical history. She stayed awake all night, saying my sister's surgery wasn't finis

Sam and I pulled at the same moment and dragged the chair toward the glass doors. My mother lost her grip and she stumbled toward the edge of the drive. Another staff member reached her, took her arm, and hauled her aside.Tires shrieked against the pavement. Lily squeezed her eyes shut and cried for me. As I pushed, I looked down and told her I was there. I told her to keep her back against the seat.As the chair went between the stone bollards in front of the doors, my shoulder slammed into the frame. Pain made my vision go black, but I didn't dare let go until Sam took the handles and got her inside.I looked back. Vivian's car had reached the entrance. She saw us go through the doors and was still turning the wheel to come after us when the front of the car slammed into a concrete pillar. The crash shook the ground under my feet, and debris scattered everywhere. The staff pulled me away from the glass, and I dropped to the floor beside the chair. I immediately cupped my daughter's
