Chapter 3

Author: AlphaGo
At seven that night, Damian had reserved a table at a restaurant on the top floor overlooking the river.

White roses on the long table. A violinist playing something soft behind the partition.

Damian was already seated, his shirt collar slightly open, looking visibly exhausted.

I walked over and sat down. In my clutch was the divorce agreement he had already signed, and the four-week prenatal report.

I had already booked a morning flight to Zurich.

I'd agreed to this dinner only to make things clear about the divorce, and... the baby.

"Vivian, I'm glad you came." Damian seemed relieved. He took my cold hand. "About Clara being pregnant, actually..."

The phone on the table buzzed violently.

The screen showed the head nurse's extension from Clara's private ward.

A flicker of intense annoyance crossed Damian's eyes. He instinctively wanted to decline. But his finger hovered over the screen, and in the end, he gritted his teeth and answered.

"Mr. Damian! Miss Clara is on the rooftop terrace! She's emotionally unstable and threatening to jump! She says without you by her side, life isn't worth living! Please come quickly!"

The head nurse's sharp, panicked voice shattered the elegance of the restaurant.

Damian's face went white. He shot to his feet, knocking over the high-backed chair behind him.

"Damian." I stayed in my seat. A sudden, sharp pain tore through my abdomen.

That downward, ripping sensation hit hard. Cold sweat instantly soaked my back.

My vision went black. I couldn't even sit upright. I collapsed onto the table, my fingers clawing into the tablecloth.

"Vivian? What's wrong?" Damian grabbed my shoulder, his eyes full of panic.

"I... my stomach hurts..." I was gasping, my forehead against the cold tabletop, my voice faint. "Damian, call a doctor..."

Damian touched my palm. It was slick with cold sweat.

"Your hands are clammy, your face is this pale... did you skip dinner again?"

His expression shifted from panic to a familiar diagnosis. His tone even carried a note of reproach and resignation. "It's definitely acute low blood sugar, plus a stomach cramp. You always get like this when you're starving."

The head nurse's hysterical scream came through the phone.

"She's got one leg over the railing! Mr. Damian, please hurry!"

Damian's whole body jolted. The last bit of reason in his eyes was swept away.

He hauled a nearby waiter over and slapped a black card on the table.

"My wife has low blood sugar. Call an ambulance and get her to City Hospital. Put everything on my account. Give her some warm sugar water."

Then he turned, leaned down, and pressed a hurried kiss to my sweat-soaked forehead.

"Vivian, this is life or death. If Clara jumps, it's two lives. You go to the hospital and get some glucose. Be good. I'll save her and come straight to you."

He pulled back, grabbed his coat, and ran out of the restaurant.

My fingers slipped limply off the table. My consciousness sank into darkness.

Damian pulled out his satellite phone and dialed his assistant, Michael."Michael, it's me."His eyes never left the figure moving through the snow."All routine Moretti family affairs go to the board. Major decisions by encrypted email. Don't call me unless it's a top-level crisis."Michael was alarmed. "Sir, where are you going?"Damian gripped his damaged hands, his knuckles aching."I'm staying in Switzerland.""Until the day she forgives me."He hung up, walked to the edge of the camp, and stood there quietly. He stayed for a full year. One year later. Zurich.Early summer sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the apartment, bright on the floor.Vivian leaned back in a rocking chair, a sleeping baby boy in her arms. The baby had thick black hair. Outside the medical tent, the snow fell harder.Damian stood like a statue in the sub-zero storm for three hours. The flap opened. Eric stepped out."Mr. Moretti, if you're trying to freeze to death out here for sympathy, I suggest you do it somewhere else. Vivian is over a month pregnant. She can't handle stress."A month. One month. The timing matched the night he came back from his business trip. The night before Clara returned.Damian closed his eyes. Something bitter rose in his throat. He pushed through the tent flap and strode inside.Vivian sat on a cot, sorting through her data tablet."Vivian." Damian slowed his breathing, as if afraid of shattering something. "I know I was wrong. I was so wrong... Come home with me. We can start over."Vivian set down the tablet with a soft click. She looked up. Her eyes were ice."Mr. Moretti traveled all the way to Switzerland just to remind me how stupid I used to be?""No! I swear that's not it!" Damian rushed to explain. "I know I hurt

Sanetsch Pass had become a graveyard of ice and twisted metal. The wind drove ice crystals into his face like knives. The heavy rescue equipment hadn't arrived yet. Damian jumped off the snowmobile, grabbed a shovel and a pry bar, and charged into the snowdrift like a madman."VIVIAN!"The wind shredded his scream. He knelt in the snow. When the shovel snapped, he clawed at the snow with his gloved hands.Sharp ice cut through the thick gloves. His knuckles split. Blood mixed with snowmelt and froze into dark red crystals. He felt nothing. With every swing of his arm, images from the past four years flashed through his mind. Her back at the dinner table, waiting until the food went cold. Her alone in the hospital corridor, clutching her stomach in despair. Her shoulders growing thinner under that trench coat.He had thought those were small things. He had thought that as long as he gave her money and a title, she would always be there waiting. He had spent four years pushing her away.

Zurich. The institute's main office was brightly lit.An eight-figure check slammed onto the desk. The Swiss institute representative across from him adjusted his glasses, looking uncomfortable."Mr. Moretti, research personnel field schedules are classified information..."Damian pulled out his pen and added another line to the check."Thirty million.""Use your private clearance. Take me there."Dawn was breaking. The roar of the helicopter tore through the silence of the Alps.Freezing wind poured through the cabin seams. Damian hadn't slept in thirty-six hours.Below stretched the jagged Valais range, peaks like a beast's teeth. The base was a minimalist glass structure built into the mountainside. The moment the helicopter touched down, Damian pushed the door open and ran.He grabbed the first researcher he saw. "Where's Vivian?""Ms. Moretti took a team into the mountains at five this morning to collect sediment samples."A calm voice came from around the corner.A man in gold-ri

Damian's fingertips dug into the embossed seal on the decree.Clara's hand landed on his shoulder."Damian, she's just taking advantage of how you spoil her. She's putting on a show to scare you. The rider's curses cut through the rain, but Damian didn't even blink. He gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles went white."Damian!"Clara's carefully manicured hand pressed against her chest. The diamond bracelet on her wrist knocked against the dashboard with a sharp clink."What is wrong with you lately? You forgot you promised to take me to the movies, and now you're trying to kill us both?"Damian didn't look at her."I'm tired. Go find your friends."His voice was ice. Flat.
