Chapter 2

Penulis: I’m Stressed
Kevin was the textbook definition of someone who resented others' success and mocked their failures. I used to think of him as a friend and helped him when I could.

When he was short on cash for meals, I paid. When he screwed up at work, I covered for him. It turned out that in his mind, I could only do worse than him, never better.

"What's the plan for tomorrow night's dinner?" Celia dabbed her mouth elegantly. "Do you need me to do anything specific?"

"Not really. Just keep up your wealthy heiress persona. He wants to steal you away? Let him try. I want to see just how low he'll stoop."

Celia raised an eyebrow. "Alright, whatever you say, boss."

Just then, my phone buzzed again. It was a private message from Kevin.

"Luke, I'm telling you right now to break up with Ms. Spencer. Otherwise when your cover gets blown tomorrow, you'll be humiliated.

"I'm doing this for your own good. Someone like Ms. Spencer is way out of your league.

"If you're short on cash, I can lend you 500 bucks to pay off your loan interest first. Don't go down the wrong path."

I scoffed. Who did this penny-pinching saint think he was? I ignored him and turned off my phone.

The next evening at Grand View, Celia and I arrived to find Kevin already waiting. He'd obviously put effort into his appearance, his hair slicked back with what looked like half a bottle of gel. When he saw Celia, he didn't even try to hide the fawning look in his eyes.

I stifled a laugh, while Celia subtly moved closer to my side.

Kevin's expression soured immediately.

"Luke, how can you be so shameless in public? If you're with Ms. Spencer, you need to know your place instead of embarrassing her!"

I didn't bother responding. There was no point arguing with a guy this delusional.

When I didn't react, Kevin wasn't fazed. He looked me up and down and clicked his tongue dramatically.

"Wow, coming to such an upscale restaurant dressed this casually… Well, I guess it makes sense. With how expensive this place is, you probably saved every penny for the bill, right? That whole outfit probably cost less than 200 bucks total."

He turned to Celia, his voice suddenly becoming smarmy. "Ms. Spencer, please don't take offense. Luke's always been like this. He has no sense of taste."

Celia gave him a cool glance. "I think Luke looks perfectly fine. He's clean and put-together, unlike certain people who try way too hard."

Kevin's expression froze for a moment, but he quickly recovered his smile. "You're too kind, Ms. Spencer. Always so understanding of him."

Then he picked up the menu, pretending to look out for me. "The food here is pretty pricey. Even an appetizer costs over 300 dollars. Luke, did you bring enough money? If you're short on cash, we could always go somewhere else. There's a decent diner downstairs."

I gave him an amused look. "Go ahead and order. Don't worry about saving me money."

A flash of malice crossed Kevin's eyes. "Alright then, don't say I didn't warn you! Just don't come crying to Ms. Spencer to foot the bill when you can't pay!"

He proceeded to order seven or eight of the most expensive entrees, plus a five-figure bottle of premium liquor. After finishing his order, he shot me a challenging look.

Then he pulled out his phone and opened my social media account. He held the phone up in front of Celia, pointing at one of the photos. It was a shot I'd taken in a garage with a limited-edition sports car in the background.

"Ms. Spencer, take a look at this photo. This car has to be worth millions, wouldn't you say?"

Kevin shot me a glance, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Luke, why don't you tell us where this photo was taken? You snuck into some auto show, didn't you?"

I replied calmly, "I took it in my family's garage."

"Ha!" Kevin burst out laughing.

"Luke, do you even hear yourself right now? Your family lives in some rundown old apartment building. How could you possibly have that kind of garage? You probably don't even have a decent parking spot!

"Is it really that hard to admit you're broke? Why keep up this act?"

Celia spoke up then. "You seem to know a lot about Luke's family situation."

Kevin smiled. "Of course. We were roommates for four years in college. I even saw the paperwork when he applied for financial aid.

"Ms. Spencer, he's got you completely fooled. Why don't we call the waiter over to settle the bill right now? If he can't pay, or if he tries to make you pay, then his identity as a freeloader will be exposed on the spot!"

"Wh… what?" Kevin's eyes went wide. He looked like someone had just pulled the rug out from under him."A fake? You paid her?"He muttered to himself, unable to process the series of blows. The woman he'd been scheming to seduce was just a broke entrepreneur? And the roommate he'd looked down on was the real prize?I looked at his unraveling state and decided I was done with this. I waved my hand, and security escorted him out. The terrace fell quiet again.Celia turned to look at me, her expression slightly exasperated. "So in your mind, I've always just been a broke startup founder?"I raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you? Ms. Spencer, don't forget you still owe me 50 million in unrealized valuation."Celia laughed softly and took my hand again, interlacing our fingers. "Yes, boss. I'll spend the rest of my life paying off that debt."…One year later, at the CEO's office on the top floor of Lancaster Group headquarters, I was reviewing documents when my secretary knocked and enter

"What?"Veronica and Vivian were completely stunned.Dad turned to look at me, his eyes full of approval. "Luke, your judgment was better than mine this time."I looked at Celia, warmth spreading through my chest. She'd been quietly preparing all along, just so she could stand beside me today with her head held high and not embarrass me.Seeing Dad's attitude toward Celia, the guests quickly changed their tune. People who'd looked down on her moments ago now rushed to congratulate us.Veronica and Vivian looked ready to explode with rage. I took Celia out to the terrace, where the cool night breeze dispersed the stuffiness from inside."Celia, be honest with me. How long did you rehearse for today? That antique painting and the valuation of your AI project were all part of your plan, weren't they?"Celia gently swirled the champagne in her glass, regaining her usual composure. She leaned against the railing, watching me with an expression I couldn't quite read."Plan sounds too

"Celia."For some reason, I found myself asking, "Kevin said you were being fooled by me. Doesn't that make you angry?"Celia raised an eyebrow slightly. She didn't answer immediately. Instead, she suddenly took a step closer.A hint of her perfume reached me, something clean and understated. Her voice dropped lower. "If it were anyone else fooling me, I might be angry. But as long as it's you…"A smile flickered in her eyes. "I don't mind staying fooled."She was too close. I turned my face slightly away, feeling my ears heat up. A soft laugh came from above me, filled with amusement."It's rare to see you so… innocent. It's cute."Was this woman flirting with me?After processing that, I looked at Celia with forced composure. "You're not about to confess your feelings, are you? Because that's not in our contract. That would cost extra."Celia blinked, then covered her face and laughed helplessly."Luke Lancaster," she said, looking at me with even deeper amusement in her e

Tears and snot streamed down Kevin's face. "Luke, for the sake of our four years as roommates in college, please let me off this time! I really know I was wrong! I'll do anything for you from now on."I scoffed. "Kevin, you're the last person who should be talking to me about loyalty. Adults have to face the consequences of their actions."You're fired. I'll also be pursuing legal action for slander and defamation. And given your appalling professional conduct, I'll be blacklisting you industry-wide."An industry-wide blacklist. For someone like Kevin with no connections, this was career suicide."No! You can't do this to me! Luke Lancaster, you bastard!"Kevin completely broke down and lunged at me, but security grabbed him. He struggled desperately, cursing nonstop."You think having money makes you so great? Ms. Spencer must not know what you're really like, or she wouldn't have fallen for your lies! A fake, manipulative man like you doesn't deserve love!"I looked down at hi

The conference room fell deathly silent.Kevin's eyes nearly bulged out of his head. He stammered, "W-what? Luke Lancaster is the new CEO?"I slowly stood up and walked toward the head of the table. As I passed Kevin, I paused and looked at his ashen face with a slight smile."Kevin, who did you say you were reporting earlier?"Kevin's whole body trembled. He couldn't get a word out and just stared at me in terror. How boring. I turned away and got straight to the point."Everyone, let me reintroduce myself. I'm Luke Lancaster. This company now belongs to the Lancaster family. Someone mentioned earlier that the new leadership is here to handle layoffs and restructuring."I twirled the pen in my hand, looking at Kevin with an amused expression. "That's correct. Some trash does need to be cleared out.""Ms. Brooks," I called out the supervisor first. She was the classic type who had a minor position but put on major airs. No matter how perfectly I did my work, she always found w

The next day, I went to work in high spirits. Making Kevin bleed that much money brought me immense satisfaction. But the moment I stepped into the office, I could tell something was off.The usually lively break room went silent. Several coworkers huddled together, whispering and shooting me sideways glances full of contempt and suspicion."Look, he actually showed up. What a shameless guy.""Right? After last night, if I were him, I'd be too embarrassed to come back.""Kevin was right. That manager must have been putting on an act for Ms. Spencer's sake. Or, heh, you know the kind of relationship he has with that sugar mommy. Talk about shameless."I raised an eyebrow. It seemed like Kevin had been busy after he left last night. I'd barely sat down at my desk when he stalked over with a dark expression."Luke, I thought you wouldn't have the guts to show your face today."Kevin slammed a cup of coffee down on my desk. Coffee sloshed out and stained my files."What's wrong? Ha
