Chapter 3

Author: Echo
The sound of that key hitting the trash was barely a whisper, but it crushed my entire world.

I stumbled out of the room. Staring at the bracelet I could never take off, the tears finally broke free.

I did not understand how twenty years of love could just vanish.

Caspian and I were neighbors. We were the only light in each other's lives.

My mother was a tyrant. I had no toys, no amusement parks—only endless cello practice and scolding.

It was Caspian who would climb over my balcony late at night when I was crying, sneaking me my favorite chocolates. He beat up the boys who bullied me, snuck me out to have fun, and took the blame when we got caught.

"Do not be scared, Lorelai. I will always protect you."

That was his teenage promise.

We were never apart, except for college. We fell in love naturally and dated for seven years.

On the day he officially took over the Solis syndicate and became the Don of New York's underworld, he got down on one knee and locked me in for life with a diamond ring.

We were the golden couple of New York. I never thought there would be a third person in our marriage.

I first heard Ivy's name a year ago.

Caspian was furious in his study, yelling about a new secretary who almost blew an arms deal with the Europeans. I brought him coffee and asked why he did not just fire the idiot.

Caspian rubbed his temples and sighed. "She is an orphan from a broken home. It is pitiful. I will give her one more chance."

I did not care. The Solis family could afford to feed one more mouth.

But then, things started to shift. He started mentioning her casually.

"Ivy stayed up all night finishing the reports. She actually has potential."

"Ivy is a bit clumsy, but she listens."

The turning point was a month ago.

Caspian got drunk at a syndicate gala. The person who brought him home was not Marco, but Ivy.

Wearing a revealing evening gown, she helped him into the living room. She stared at me without an ounce of respect.

"Mrs. Solis, Caspian has a weak stomach. Do not let him drink so much next time. There is hangover soup in the kitchen, make sure you heat it up for him."

She spoke to me like she was the lady of the house.

I felt sick, but my upbringing kept me from making a scene.

Then, two weeks ago, I had the most important performance of my life—a solo at Carnegie Hall. Caspian promised he would be in the front row, dead center.

That seat stayed empty all night.

After the show, I called him frantically. At 2 AM, someone finally answered.

"Caspian, where are you?" I asked anxiously.

Instead, Ivy's lazy voice came through. "Mrs. Solis, Caspian was dealing with an emergency and fell asleep. Please do not disturb him."

"Where are you?!" I demanded.

BEEP. BEEP. She hung up.

I later found out they spent the night at one of the syndicate's safe houses.

I lost my mind and fought with him. He swore he was just tired and nothing happened, promising to keep his distance. Under my pressure, he fired her.

I thought the nightmare was over.

Until today, three hours before his accident. I was using his iPad to read the news when a text popped up.

Sender: Ivy.

"I really need to see you. Please."

That was the spark that ignited our worst fight.

Hearing the jealousy in Zane's voice, I froze, then shook my head frantically against his chest."No, Zane. I do not love him anymore. I am crying for the idiot who gave up everything for him." I turned around and buried my face in his broad chest. "Twenty years... all for nothing."The dark clouds in Zane's eyes vanished. He cupped my face tenderly and kissed me—a rough, fiercely possessive kiss that swallowed all my sobs. That night, with his burning heat and dominant tenderness, he healed the scars on my soul, making me surrender completely to his world. The next morning, the sun poured into the bedroom. I was calm. When I turned on my phone, Caspian's mother called. The usually elegant, composed woman was sobbing."Lorelai, my sweet girl, I saw the news. That bastard son of mine ruined everything," she cried. "Leave him. Go do what makes you happy. Whether you are a Solis or not, you will always be my daughter."Tears fell again, but this time, they were tears of gratitude. This ge

A few days later, my mother called me frantically, demanding I come home immediately.Though our relationship was cold, she was still my mother. I had Zane's bodyguards drive me over. When I pushed open the door, I froze.Caspian was sitting on my family's sofa, and my mother was hovering next to him, smiling like a sycophant. Seeing me, she quickly made an excuse and left us alone."Lorelai..." Caspian stood up, forcing a desperate, loving look onto his haggard face.He walked up to me and pulled a slightly bent necklace out of his pocket. It was the key he had thrown in the trash. He had actually dug it out."Look, it is our key. You said this locks our souls together. As long as we have it, we will never be apart." Caspian gripped my hands, his tone pathetic, repeating the exact words I had used to beg him. "Lorelai, I am your husband. Look at me. Do you remember?"I stared at his sickening performance with dead eyes and yanked my hands back."I believe you are my husband," I said c

The night was deep, and the Long Island estate was dead quiet.I woke up thirsty and got out of bed to get water. As I walked into the hallway, I heard the faint sound of the front door opening.I glanced down and saw Zane taking off his black overcoat, bringing the winter chill in with him. The dim wall sconce illuminated his face, and I immediately noticed a dark bruise on the corner of his mouth, with a trace of dried blood. In all of New York, the only person with the guts—and the motive—to punch Zane was the enraged Caspian.Guilt washed over me. If I had not used him to provoke Caspian, the Don of the Averin family would not have ended up in a fistfight like a street thug.I hurried down the stairs. "You are hurt."Zane glanced at me, his eyes unusually cold. He avoided my touch, his voice slightly raspy. "It is nothing. Go back to sleep."He walked straight toward the guest room on the second floor.I did not back down. I grabbed the first-aid kit from the living room and follow

Dead silence fell over the ballroom.Everyone's eyes widened, gasping in shock. This drama was better than a Hollywood movie.Hearing my accusation, Caspian stared at me, then at Zane, his brain completely short-circuiting.Zane played along flawlessly. He naturally wrapped one arm around my waist, using his other hand to gently rub my back, soothing me.A look of helpless indulgence crossed his cold face as he coaxed me in a low voice, "Do not be silly. I have never touched another woman but you."Then, Zane glanced up at Caspian. A mocking, icy smirk played on his lips. "Congratulations, Caspian. You are going to be a father."The words hit Caspian like a physical blow.He finally snapped out of his shock. He shoved Ivy away and glared at me with bloodshot eyes, his voice hoarse with rage. "Lorelai... what did you just call him? Who the fuck are you calling darling?!"I glanced up from Zane's chest, staring at Caspian like he was a deranged stranger. My eyes were full of disgust and

After all, I was still amnesiac. It was not until I took his arm and stepped into the glittering, luxurious ballroom that I truly understood the terrifying extent of this man's power. As we walked in, the noisy room went dead silent for a second. Countless eyes landed on us—shocked, probing—but no one dared to show a hint of disrespect. The elites and politicians immediately plastered on flattering smiles, walking up to toast Zane, even complimenting how stunning we looked together, as if I had always been his woman.Sipping my champagne, I marveled at the absolute power this man wielded.Soon, a commotion started at the entrance.I turned to see Caspian walking in with Ivy.
