Chapter 2

Autor: Cece West
Matteo had traded his expensive suit for the faded jacket Leah knew.

As though the ballroom had never happened.

“Why aren’t you asleep?”

She placed the documents on the table.

“I need your signature in a few places.”

He frowned and opened the first page.

His phone rang.

“Nico won’t sleep until you get here,” Bianca said. “You promised to watch the meteor shower with him.”

Matteo’s voice softened.

“I’m on my way.”

He picked up the pen.

For years, Leah had handled the rent, utilities, and bills. He was used to signing wherever she pointed.

Tonight, he didn’t read closely, either.

He slid the papers back and grabbed his keys.

“Get some sleep if that’s everything.”

After the door closed, Leah answered.

“That’s everything, Matteo.”

“Except the divorce.”

“Can we leave now?” Finn asked, pointing at his father’s signature.

She put the papers away and crouched to button his pajamas.

“There’s more paperwork. Once the lawyer confirms everything, we’ll move.”

“Far away?”

“Far enough that you won’t have to worry about anyone knocking on the door for money.”

He finally smiled.

Matteo didn’t return for weeks.

Leah still saw him on Bianca’s public account.

On a yacht, he fastened Nico’s life jacket. At a private restaurant, he carefully cut the boy’s steak.

In another photograph, Bianca held his arm between relatives from both families.

The caption read:

*Finally back where we belong.*

Leah saved the pictures relevant to their finances and family circumstances and sent them to her attorney.

Then she closed the page.

She stopped studying his face.

Instead, she dropped extra shifts, gathered their documents, and contacted laundries in another city.

Finn deserved more than promises that his father would come home.

He deserved more than a childhood spent helping pay his father’s supposed debts.

Matteo returned one weekend morning.

“Get Finn dressed. I’m taking him out.”

Leah stopped packing a box.

“Where?”

“Food. Maybe shopping.” He glanced at Finn. “You’re always asking to ride in my car.”

Finn didn’t run to him.

He moved closer to Leah.

Matteo frowned.

A knock interrupted them. Martha, the landlord, wanted to discuss the deposit and their move.

“You’re leaving?” Matteo looked at the boxes. “What’s wrong with this place?”

“It’s damp. Finn keeps coughing at night.”

He set his keys down without another question.

“Go talk. I’ll watch him.”

Leah looked at Finn.

Matteo bent down and picked up the chipped toy car on his desk.

“Come on. Dad’ll play with you.”

She followed Martha into the stairwell.

They were gone barely fifteen minutes.

When Martha heard about the divorce, she went quiet. Then she offered to return the entire deposit.

“I thought you’d keep waiting forever.”

“So did I,” Leah said, turning her key between her fingers. “I thought if I waited long enough and worked hard enough, he’d love me.”

She looked up.

“I don’t need to wait anymore.”

Back inside, the toy car lay on the floor.

Matteo and Finn were gone.

Leah called immediately.

The first call rang out. The second was rejected.

She ran downstairs.

The convenience store owner had seen a black sedan collect them. The driver had called Matteo “Don.”

“I heard them mention St. Adrian Medical Center.”

The private hospital funded by the Vitale family.

By the time Leah reached the top floor, two guards stood outside the doors.

She recognized one from the banquet.

As visitors stepped out of the elevator, she slipped into a side corridor.

Near the surgical wing, Bianca held Matteo’s hand.

“The doctors say Nico can’t wait. Thank God the tests showed Finn was a match.”

Leah stopped.

The tests.

Two months earlier, Matteo had come home with news of free children’s health screenings. He’d told her a charity was offering them.

She’d taken Finn to have blood drawn.

He’d been planning this even then.

“What if Leah refuses?” Bianca asked.

“She doesn’t know yet. I’ll tell her after the collection.”

“And the doctor?”

“The paperwork’s been handled. He just needs to do his job.”

Leah braced herself against the wall.

Matteo hadn’t come home to spend time with his son.

He’d come to collect a donor.

She ran into the waiting area.

“Give me back my son!”

Matteo spun around.

“How did you find us?”

“You promised him lunch and took him into surgery?”

She grabbed his collar, tears spilling.

“He’s terrified of needles. Last time, he kept asking if you’d stay with him. Were you lying to us then, too?”

Matteo caught her wrists.

“It’s a bone marrow collection. The doctors are managing the risks.”

“Then why didn’t you ask me? Why did you lie to him?”

Bianca stood, her eyes wet.

“Nico’s seriously ill. We had no other choice.”

“So Finn doesn’t get a choice?”

Leah pulled free and ran toward the surgical doors.

The guards blocked her.

Slowly, Leah took Adrian’s hand and laced her fingers through his.“If Finn asks about him one day and wants to know, you can tell him the truth,” she said softly. She looked up into her husband’s eyes.“Just don’t let him feel that any of it was his responsibility.”Finn was ten now—tall for his age, warmhearted, and quick to laugh. He had school friends, weekend soccer games with Adrian, and grandparents who still tried to pile too much food onto his plate every Sunday. His childhood had finally been given back to him.She wouldn’t let a shadow from the past weigh on his shoulders again.Adrian nodded solemnly.“I know. I’ll handle it carefully when the time comes.”Leah leaned close and kissed his lips lightly.“Some people can only stay in the past.”Adrian’s expression softened, and he held her securely in his arms.“Ready to go home?” he asked.“Ready. Dad called earlier to say he bought fresh salmon again, and Finn told him to save the biggest piece for me.”Adrian laughed and o

Three years later, outside a hospital clinic in St. Louis, Leah stood under the shade of the walkway looking at the test results in her hand. Her fingers trembled slightly against the edge of the paper.“What did the doctor say?”Having just parked the car, Adrian rushed over from the lot, his jacket open and his breath slightly quick as he took the slip from her hand.“Sorry, sweetheart, there were too many cars today. Parking took forever, and I was worried you’d be waiting alone—”His voice cut off mid-sentence.When he saw the words printed on the page, he stopped short, stared for two full seconds, and then broke into wild joy. With tears shining in her eyes, Leah nodded at him.“I’m pregnant.”Adrian carefully folded the report into his pocket first so he wouldn’t crumple it, then pulled her excitedly into his arms, laughing like a child.“That’s wonderful! Finn is going to have a little brother or sister!”“He’ll be thrilled,” Leah said, laughing against his shoulder. “He’s been

Hundreds of miles away at the Vitale estate, the curtains in the study were half drawn.Matteo sat alone behind his wide desk, watching the wedding clip on his phone. It was a short video a guest had posted on a social media account earlier that afternoon. In the frame, sunlight fell over the lawn. Leah was smiling with her head tilted slightly toward Adrian, and Finn stood between them in his small white suit, holding both their hands. No one in that picture was afraid. No one was looking at the doors for guards, and no one was being forced to stay.Matteo watched the clip through to the end three times before he slowly shut off the screen. In the black glass of the phone, he saw only his own hollow face.He rose, walked to the tall window, and looked out at the clear sky above the iron gates.“How good it would be if I were the one holding her hand and kissing her.”He took a slightly worn photograph of Leah from his inside pocket and gently stroked her smiling face with his thumb.I

There were no family interests tied to this wedding, no business partners waiting in side rooms to sign agreements, and no one judging whether a former driver’s daughter was worthy of the groom. Her mother sat in the front row dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief while her father beamed and clapped harder than anyone else.Neighbors from their street, colleagues Leah had earned the respect of through her own work, and friends who genuinely cared for them filled the seats.Everyone who had come was there to give them their blessing.Adrian crouched down in front of Finn so they were at eye level and smiled.“Would you like to call me something different today?”Finn looked at him, his small hands tightening around the ribbon on the bouquet.“Dad.”Finn looked startled himself after saying the unfamiliar word out loud. For a second, the lawn seemed to go quiet around them. Then Finn’s ears turned pink, and he repeated it more firmly.“Dad.”Watching him, Leah shed tears.“Finn, that’s

“Don’t make me hate you.”Leah bit her lip until it hurt.He smiled with extreme gentleness, even as blood slipped down his wrist.“Hating me is fine too. It’s better than forgetting me.”“You’re truly insane.”“Yes, I’m insane.”Matteo looked at her with near obsession.“Only you can make me stop.”For a long moment, Leah said nothing. The scent of roses and blood hung together in the quiet chapel. She looked at the man in front of her—the man she had loved with all the courage of her youth, and the man who had taught her, piece by piece, how to stop loving him. Then she took a deep breath.“I refuse.”All color drained from his face at once.“I stopped loving you a long time ago, and I don’t care about what you call compensation.”Her voice was steady, clear enough for everyone by the door to hear.“Your life belongs to you, Matteo. Whether you live or die has nothing to do with Finn and me anymore. Nothing you do will change my decision.”At her signal, the doctor and bodyguards rus

“When I investigated her recently, I found out the Bellandi family had arranged that kidnapping from start to finish.”His voice shook with self-mockery.“No one was ever going to hurt her. They staged the whole thing because they wanted the Vitale family to owe them a life debt, and they wanted me to remember her forever.”Leah froze for a heartbeat, then let out a cold laugh.“So because you were lied to as a child, you took the methods they used on you and used them on Finn and me?”Her eyes were bright and merciless.“When you loved her, why didn’t you gamble with your own life? Why did you gamble with ours?”“Why was it Finn on that hospital bed? Why was it Finn bleeding in the go-kart lane? Why was it Finn crying into the phone on that cliff while you told the kidnappers to do whatever they wanted?”“I’m sorry.”Tears fell down Matteo’s face.“I was blind. I pushed away the people who truly loved me and kept the ones who were scheming against me by my side.”“I heard you begging
