Chapter 3

Author: Cece West
Here, Matteo wasn’t the husband who occasionally came home.

One word from him put everyone against her.

“Move!” Leah pushed at the guard. “I want my child!”

The surgical doors opened.

A doctor hurried toward them, his expression tight.

“The donor has developed a bleeding complication. We’re treating it, but we need blood immediately.”

Leah could barely hear through the ringing in her ears.

“Finn? How is he?”

Before he answered, a nurse arrived from the other corridor.

Nico’s condition had changed, too. He urgently needed blood support.

Bianca burst into tears.

Matteo caught her first.

Then he looked at Leah.

“Your previous tests showed your blood type is compatible with Nico’s.”

She stared at him.

“My son’s still in there. You want me to help yours?”

“Finn has doctors.”

“I want to see him!”

Matteo pulled her aside, his voice low.

“The people here follow my instructions. Cooperate, and I’ll have the best team brought in for Finn.”

Her hands went cold.

She understood what he hadn’t said.

“You’re using your own son’s treatment to force me to help another child?”

He didn’t answer.

He looked at the nurse.

Leah stared at the closed doors until her fists slowly loosened.

“Save Finn.”

She lifted her chin.

“I’ll go.”

In the donation room, her face quickly drained of color.

The nurse glanced toward the door more than once.

“She isn’t tolerating this well. We shouldn’t continue.”

Through the glass, Matteo asked only one question.

“How much more does Nico need?”

Leah closed her eyes.

As everything grew hazy, she listened to footsteps in the corridor.

She was afraid the next person through the door would bring bad news about Finn.

When she woke, tape covered her arm.

“Mom.”

Finn sat beside her bed, his eyes swollen.

She struggled upright and pulled him close, terrified of hurting him if she held too tightly.

“Where does it hurt? Tell me.”

He buried his face against her neck.

“Dad said we’d get ice cream when I woke up.”

Her tears fell.

“But there wasn’t any ice cream.”

His voice broke.

“And Dad wasn’t there.”

She stroked his damp hair. Her throat hurt too much to answer.

“Can we leave?” he whispered. “I don’t want to go anywhere with him again.”

“Yes.”

She kissed his forehead.

“Once the doctors say you can go home, I’m taking you away.”

The door opened.

Matteo stood in the doorway, looking at them.

“Taking him where?”

Finn immediately hid behind Leah.

Matteo paused.

Before, the boy had rushed to greet him, even insisting on carrying his jacket.

Now, one step closer made Finn clutch his mother’s hospital gown.

“Answer me.”

Leah pulled the blanket around Finn’s waist.

“Somewhere no one will trick him into surgery.”

“He’s fine now.”

“So you can pretend nothing happened?”

“Bianca just got out of a terrible marriage. Nico’s sick. I can’t abandon them.”

“What about Finn?”

Matteo’s impatience showed.

“Do you have to make this ugly?”

Leah looked at him.

“You said your family took everything because you married me. I believed you. I believed every payment I made was paying off your debt.”

His gaze sharpened.

“You know?”

“I was the clown at Nico’s party.”

Silence.

She gently moved Finn’s hands from his chest. Tape marks still covered his wrist.

“The child you threw money at was Finn.”

Matteo said nothing for a moment.

Then, without an explanation, he spoke.

“I gave you a chance to leave. You chose to stay with me. Keeping the baby was your choice, too.”

Leah’s breath caught.

Five years of exhaustion, reduced to an arrangement she’d willingly accepted.

“Yes,” she said. “I chose the wrong man.”

She didn’t cry.

Her calm unsettled him more than tears would have.

He looked at Finn, who still wouldn’t face him, and left.

Leah didn’t see him again during their hospital stay.

Voices in the corridor reminded her that Bianca and Nico occupied a private suite on the other side.

Nico wanted pastries from a particular restaurant. Matteo had them delivered.

Bianca couldn’t sleep. Matteo stayed late.

Leah stopped listening.

She shut the door and helped Finn with his recovery exercises.

After his discharge and a further period of rest, she took him to the seaside amusement park he’d wanted to visit for months.

She bought cotton candy and a new toy car.

Finn kept checking the unopened package, holding it against his chest.

At the ride ticket booth, the attendant smiled.

“Is Dad coming, too? There’s a family rate for three.”

Finn shook his head.

“Just me and Mom.”

A familiar voice came from behind them.

“I’m standing right here, aren’t I?”

Slowly, Leah took Adrian’s hand and laced her fingers through his.“If Finn asks about him one day and wants to know, you can tell him the truth,” she said softly. She looked up into her husband’s eyes.“Just don’t let him feel that any of it was his responsibility.”Finn was ten now—tall for his age, warmhearted, and quick to laugh. He had school friends, weekend soccer games with Adrian, and grandparents who still tried to pile too much food onto his plate every Sunday. His childhood had finally been given back to him.She wouldn’t let a shadow from the past weigh on his shoulders again.Adrian nodded solemnly.“I know. I’ll handle it carefully when the time comes.”Leah leaned close and kissed his lips lightly.“Some people can only stay in the past.”Adrian’s expression softened, and he held her securely in his arms.“Ready to go home?” he asked.“Ready. Dad called earlier to say he bought fresh salmon again, and Finn told him to save the biggest piece for me.”Adrian laughed and o

Three years later, outside a hospital clinic in St. Louis, Leah stood under the shade of the walkway looking at the test results in her hand. Her fingers trembled slightly against the edge of the paper.“What did the doctor say?”Having just parked the car, Adrian rushed over from the lot, his jacket open and his breath slightly quick as he took the slip from her hand.“Sorry, sweetheart, there were too many cars today. Parking took forever, and I was worried you’d be waiting alone—”His voice cut off mid-sentence.When he saw the words printed on the page, he stopped short, stared for two full seconds, and then broke into wild joy. With tears shining in her eyes, Leah nodded at him.“I’m pregnant.”Adrian carefully folded the report into his pocket first so he wouldn’t crumple it, then pulled her excitedly into his arms, laughing like a child.“That’s wonderful! Finn is going to have a little brother or sister!”“He’ll be thrilled,” Leah said, laughing against his shoulder. “He’s been

Hundreds of miles away at the Vitale estate, the curtains in the study were half drawn.Matteo sat alone behind his wide desk, watching the wedding clip on his phone. It was a short video a guest had posted on a social media account earlier that afternoon. In the frame, sunlight fell over the lawn. Leah was smiling with her head tilted slightly toward Adrian, and Finn stood between them in his small white suit, holding both their hands. No one in that picture was afraid. No one was looking at the doors for guards, and no one was being forced to stay.Matteo watched the clip through to the end three times before he slowly shut off the screen. In the black glass of the phone, he saw only his own hollow face.He rose, walked to the tall window, and looked out at the clear sky above the iron gates.“How good it would be if I were the one holding her hand and kissing her.”He took a slightly worn photograph of Leah from his inside pocket and gently stroked her smiling face with his thumb.I

There were no family interests tied to this wedding, no business partners waiting in side rooms to sign agreements, and no one judging whether a former driver’s daughter was worthy of the groom. Her mother sat in the front row dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief while her father beamed and clapped harder than anyone else.Neighbors from their street, colleagues Leah had earned the respect of through her own work, and friends who genuinely cared for them filled the seats.Everyone who had come was there to give them their blessing.Adrian crouched down in front of Finn so they were at eye level and smiled.“Would you like to call me something different today?”Finn looked at him, his small hands tightening around the ribbon on the bouquet.“Dad.”Finn looked startled himself after saying the unfamiliar word out loud. For a second, the lawn seemed to go quiet around them. Then Finn’s ears turned pink, and he repeated it more firmly.“Dad.”Watching him, Leah shed tears.“Finn, that’s

“Don’t make me hate you.”Leah bit her lip until it hurt.He smiled with extreme gentleness, even as blood slipped down his wrist.“Hating me is fine too. It’s better than forgetting me.”“You’re truly insane.”“Yes, I’m insane.”Matteo looked at her with near obsession.“Only you can make me stop.”For a long moment, Leah said nothing. The scent of roses and blood hung together in the quiet chapel. She looked at the man in front of her—the man she had loved with all the courage of her youth, and the man who had taught her, piece by piece, how to stop loving him. Then she took a deep breath.“I refuse.”All color drained from his face at once.“I stopped loving you a long time ago, and I don’t care about what you call compensation.”Her voice was steady, clear enough for everyone by the door to hear.“Your life belongs to you, Matteo. Whether you live or die has nothing to do with Finn and me anymore. Nothing you do will change my decision.”At her signal, the doctor and bodyguards rus

“When I investigated her recently, I found out the Bellandi family had arranged that kidnapping from start to finish.”His voice shook with self-mockery.“No one was ever going to hurt her. They staged the whole thing because they wanted the Vitale family to owe them a life debt, and they wanted me to remember her forever.”Leah froze for a heartbeat, then let out a cold laugh.“So because you were lied to as a child, you took the methods they used on you and used them on Finn and me?”Her eyes were bright and merciless.“When you loved her, why didn’t you gamble with your own life? Why did you gamble with ours?”“Why was it Finn on that hospital bed? Why was it Finn bleeding in the go-kart lane? Why was it Finn crying into the phone on that cliff while you told the kidnappers to do whatever they wanted?”“I’m sorry.”Tears fell down Matteo’s face.“I was blind. I pushed away the people who truly loved me and kept the ones who were scheming against me by my side.”“I heard you begging
