Chapter 1

Six De Luca capos were sitting in the office.

Their conversation cut off the moment I pushed the door open. Bianca stood at Enzo's right hand, holding the marriage contract that should have been in the De Luca family's consigliere's custody.

Ninety-nine days ago, Don Vittorio De Luca had approved our formal marriage alliance. Since then, Bianca had canceled the signing on Enzo's behalf nine times. What finally reached me was, of all things, an alliance dissolution agreement.

"He didn't send me to run errands." Bianca bit her lip and looked at me as if I had wounded her. "Enzo has been so busy lately. I only wanted to take some of the work off his hands. The two files have almost identical names. I accidentally chose the wrong one."

When she lied, she even forgot to hide the way she addressed him. At an open family meeting, no one but me dared use the underboss's first name. But Enzo did not correct her.

"Bianca is organizing the anniversary memorial for Capo Rizzo while dealing with threats from the Bellini family. You think one filing mistake justifies making a scene in front of everyone?"

"One?" I put the nine rescheduling emails in front of him. "Now even the marriage contract has been replaced with an alliance dissolution agreement, and you still call it a mistake?"

Enzo did not reach for the phone. "I handle the family business. You handle the wedding," he said impatiently. "If it matters that much, why didn't you contact the consigliere yourself?"

All at once, I had no answer. Ten years ago, the Moretti family's ports and my shares had made him underboss. Now signing a contract that belonged to both of us had somehow become my responsibility alone.

"Sofia, I'm sorry."

Bianca crossed to me without warning and caught my hand. She was in a hurry to show me the supposedly correct file, but her finger swiped one screen too far.

A photograph flashed past my eyes.

It had been taken in the De Luca family's private chapel. Bianca wore a long white dress and the black diamonds reserved for De Luca women, while Enzo stood behind her, arranging her veil. Flowers covered the chapel floor. A priest waited at the altar. It looked like a full engagement ceremony.

"What is this?" I pressed my hand over hers before she could snatch the phone back.

Bianca went white, and the phone dropped onto the carpet.

Enzo finally rose and shielded her behind him.

"The Bellini family has a marriage pact Capo Rizzo signed to settle a debt. They want to force Bianca to marry Don Salvatore Bellini's son. Those photos were only meant to convince them she was already protected as the De Luca heir's fiancee."

"You used our chapel and our engagement ceremony to announce to everyone that she is your fiancee?"

"They're only photos." Enzo's voice dropped. "Once the Bellini family believes them, they won't dare touch her."

"If you wanted to protect her, you could have paid off Capo Rizzo's debt or had the De Luca family take her in as an adopted daughter. Why did you have to give her my place?"

Enzo frowned, as if the question were pointless.

"You are the Moretti heir. Nobody would dare touch you. Bianca has nothing. She needs my name more than you do."

Only then did I understand. He knew exactly what a name and a title were worth. He had simply saved them for whoever needed them more.

"Apologize to Bianca." Enzo glanced at Bianca, who was still sniffling behind him. "Her father died for me, and you accuse her of coveting your marriage in front of all these capos."

I almost thought I had misheard him.

"And if I don't?"

"Then our signing gets postponed again."

He looked at me with absolute certainty. Of course he knew what the Moretti family's ports and money were worth. He had also calculated that I would not walk away from ten years together, and that my father would not tear the alliance apart over his daughter's pain. Every time he hurt me, he soothed me with the promise of the next signing. He had weighed everything. He had simply decided that both the Moretti family and I would yield in the end.

But this time I only pushed the signed dissolution request across the desk to him.

"No need to postpone anything.

"I'll have our families end it formally."

His eyes finally landed on my signature, and something in them darkened.

I turned and walked out before he could speak. Bianca's soft voice followed me into the hall.

"Enzo, go after her. I think she is really angry this time."

"No."

Enzo sat back down, and there was something almost mocking in his voice.

"She won't throw away ten years between the Moretti and De Luca families. Ending the alliance means renegotiating compensation, ports, and territory, and the Moretti family would pay a price too. She'll come back on her own within three days."

The elevator doors slid shut in front of me.

My father's reply came through at the same moment.

[Once I have the consigliere deliver the formal dissolution papers, compensation, ports, and borders all go back on the table. The Moretti family will not give him a second chance. Are you sure?]

I pressed send.

[I'm sure.]

Before Enzo was sent away, he asked to see me one last time.We met at a Moretti port. It was where he had received his first shipping route, and where his last access privileges would be revoked for good.In only a few days, not a trace of his old pride remained."I always thought you would never leave," he said. "You loved me for ten years, and the Moretti and De Luca families were bound together. I knew you were hurting. I simply believed that as long as you were the woman I married in the end, everything else could be forgiven."The sea breeze tousled his hair. He lowered his head, and for the first time, he did not hide behind Bianca, a blood debt, or a family operation."You were right. I liked that she depended on me."In front of you, I always remembered that without the Moretti family, I might never have become underboss. Every time she looked at me, she made me feel invincible."Sofia, it isn't that I didn't know you were in pain."I just believed that no matter how much I hu

The Commission did not cancel the next day's meeting. We let Bianca go on believing that Don Vittorio would take the original route to the church. In reality, Don Matteo's three-car escort had locked down the surrounding blocks in advance, and Don Salvatore was already in Russo custody.Bianca walked into the church in the white dress from those engagement photos. She probably still believed that if Enzo saw her looking helpless enough, he would step in front of her as he always had.But waiting at the altar, besides Enzo, were Don Vittorio, Don Alessandro, Don Matteo, and the consiglieri representing five families."Where is Don Salvatore?" Only then did she realize that something was wrong."He has already admitted that you sold the route two years ago." I stood up from the pew and placed the complete evidence on the table. "You used the same backdoor to carry out this port ambush."Bianca looked at me, and the fear drained slowly out of her face."Why do you always get everything?"

Don Matteo's orders reached every corner of the Russo family within three minutes. An escort of four armored cars left the estate, and the capos on both sides of the port sealed every exit at once. I did not ride out to the ambush with them. I stayed in the control room. Two armed Moretti guards held the door and admitted no one whose identity had not been confirmed, while I pulled up every piece of port equipment near the river road. One side of that road was abandoned warehouses, the other was containers stacked and waiting to be loaded. The enemy had chosen it because once a convoy went in, it could not turn around.I took over a remote crane and swung the two outermost containers into the middle of the road. When the lead Moretti car was forced to stop, the shooters hidden in the warehouse opened fire early."Close gate seven and open the maintenance tunnel," I told the operator. "Get everyone out of those cars and back into the port through the underground passage."On the monitor

"Don Matteo, Enzo is at the south port waiting for your wife. He says he won't leave until he sees her."Half an hour later I met Enzo in the port office.Overnight, he had become a different man. He had not shaved, his suit was badly creased, and the underboss pin he had never removed was gone, reclaimed by Don Vittorio."Bianca has been thrown out of the estate." He got straight to it. "I've revoked all her access, and I'll tell the Bellini family the photos are void."I sat behind the desk and didn't have anyone pour him a drink."That's between you and her.""I never touched her." Enzo took a step forward. "The chapel photos were fake. The marriage protection was fake. Everything I did was to pay back what I owed Capo Rizzo in blood.""So as long as you didn't sleep with her, it doesn't count as betrayal?""Sofia—""You gave her my marriage contract, my veil, your name, and your choice in front of everyone. And now you're telling me that because you didn't take off her clothes, I s

On my first day at the Russo estate, Don Matteo set a black seal on my desk."This gives you access to the inner council," he said. "Any decision involving the Moretti ports is yours. When a Russo capo needs your signature, he will come directly to you."I looked at the seal and didn't pick it up right away. For five years, Enzo had said underworld business was dangerous and that he did not want me too involved. He used the Moretti ports while keeping me out of every route meeting. Over time, even I had nearly forgotten that my authority came from the shares my mother had left me."You're not worried I'll hand Russo secrets to my father?""If I can't tell my wife from my enemies, I don't deserve to be don."At my first inner council meeting, two of the older capos saw me sitting at the right side of the round table and exchanged a look of undisguised displeasure.Nico Ferraro, the capo in charge of shipping, slid the route file past me and pushed it straight to Don Matteo. "The capos h

Enzo started forward again. Don Matteo moved half a step closer to me, and every Russo guard along the far wall put a hand on his holster at once."She has already answered," Don Matteo said. "You're dismissed, Underboss."That last word landed on Enzo like a slap.He had always assumed he would be a don soon. In front of Don Matteo, he was still only an underboss who took orders from the head of his family.Don Vittorio climbed the steps at the front of the ballroom. He took another copy of the dissolution agreement from his own consigliere. Its cover bore the red seal of the De Luca don's office in the upper right corner, nothing like the copy Bianca had handled."The original reached me yesterday." Don Vittorio looked at Enzo. "I held off signing until noon today to give you one last chance to save the alliance with the Moretti family. You did not even know negotiations had begun. The Moretti family has now formally withdrawn its ports, its money, and its support."The hall went com
