Chapter 4

Autor: momo
Enzo came back to the bedroom before dawn.

Two hours had passed since I returned from the clinic, and the anesthetic in my palm had worn off. When he pushed the door open, I was using my left hand to sort through the share documents my mother had left me.

"You actually got stitches?"

His eyes went to the bandages wrapping my hand, and his face changed.

"I thought it was just a scratch."

"You saw perfectly well that my hand was covered in blood."

He stood where he was and didn't deny it.

After a moment he took the first aid kit out of the cabinet and sat down in front of me. He had cleaned up my injuries many times over ten years, and he still remembered which ointment to use.

He unwound the bandage, and his breathing grew heavier when he saw the crisscross of stitches in my palm.

"I thought Bianca was going to fall into the glass."

"So you pushed me out of the way for her."

"I never meant for you to get hurt."

"And after you saw I was hurt, you still carried her out first."

His hands stopped.

He did not explain again. He bent his head and rewrapped my hand. Those hands had never trembled while holding a gun, but now they were as careful as they had always been with me. When he kissed my fingertips, the hurt I had swallowed surged back.

When the tears came, he pulled me against him.

"All right, don't cry." His hand moved slowly over my back. "I know I have neglected you lately. Once Capo Rizzo's memorial is over I'll handle our contract myself, and Bianca won't go near it again."

I leaned against that familiar chest and almost believed him again.

Enzo kissed me. He knew exactly how to soften me after a fight. As our breathing tangled, he pressed me into the mattress, his hand sliding slowly down my waist.

Just as I closed my eyes, a document slipped out of his inside jacket pocket and landed beside the bed.

I saw the title.

Moretti Family Statement Acknowledging Temporary Marriage Protection for Bianca Rizzo.

His mouth stopped against the side of my neck.

"I was going to tell you about it tomorrow."

I pushed him off and picked the document up.

The statement required me to publicly confirm that the chapel photographs were part of a family operation and guarantee that the Moretti family would not withdraw from the alliance. So his tenderness that night had nothing to do with my hand. He needed my signature.

"The Bellini family has started questioning whether the photos are real." Enzo sat up. "Sign the statement, go with Bianca to Capo Rizzo's memorial once, and the whole thing is finished."

"And then you'll marry me?"

"Of course.

"Sofia, don't wreck an alliance between our families over pointless jealousy. What your mother wanted most before she died was to see us stay together."

He brought my mother up again but never noticed that I had stopped arguing. I picked up a pen and signed my name on the statement.

Relief visibly softened Enzo's face. He kissed my forehead as if rewarding a child who had finally come to her senses.

"There's my Sofia.

"I'll take Bianca to the memorial and be back tomorrow night. When I get back we'll go see the consigliere."

After he left, I set the estate keys and the engagement ring on the nightstand and took nothing that wasn't mine.

My father's car was already waiting outside. My father, Don Alessandro Moretti, reminded me that once the alliance was transferred to the Russo family, the De Luca family would never treat it as an ordinary broken engagement.

"I'm not going to regret it."

Once I was in the car, I called Don Matteo myself.

Three years ago, the Bellini family ambushed Don Matteo at a Moretti port. I dragged him into an abandoned warehouse while he bled from a gunshot wound to the shoulder, then pressed my own coat over the wound until his people arrived.

He kept his gun aimed at the door even while he was losing blood. The only thing he asked, when I took his hand, was, "You're not afraid of me?"

"I am," I said. "But I can't let you die."

I stayed with him that night until the ambulance came. Afterward Don Matteo sent the coat back to the Moretti estate, cleaned, with a card that said only, "I owe you one." He never contacted me privately, and he never used a single one of Enzo's mistakes to get close to me.

I learned later that for the next three years, his consigliere had kept watch over my safety from a distance. Russo operatives recorded only threats and irregularities connected to me. They never approached me or intervened in the De Luca family's internal affairs on my behalf.

When the call connected, the low voice on the other end dispensed with pleasantries.

"The Moretti family has initiated the formal dissolution?"

"The De Luca family's consigliere signed for the original. At noon tomorrow, the two dons will meet to negotiate compensation and the port handover."

"Are you coming to me to use the Russo family to punish Enzo, or is it truly over?"

I watched the lights of the estate shrink behind us.

"If I still wanted to punish him, I would have stayed and let him see how much it hurt.

"I'm calling you because I want out."

The other end of the line went quiet for a few seconds.

"Three years ago you asked me whether I would last until the ambulance came," Don Matteo said. "Now it's my turn. Sofia, are you really ready to leave him?"

"Yes."

"Tomorrow at noon, after the two dons sign the dissolution, come at one o'clock with the formal papers," Don Matteo said. "I only marry a free woman."

Before Enzo was sent away, he asked to see me one last time.We met at a Moretti port. It was where he had received his first shipping route, and where his last access privileges would be revoked for good.In only a few days, not a trace of his old pride remained."I always thought you would never leave," he said. "You loved me for ten years, and the Moretti and De Luca families were bound together. I knew you were hurting. I simply believed that as long as you were the woman I married in the end, everything else could be forgiven."The sea breeze tousled his hair. He lowered his head, and for the first time, he did not hide behind Bianca, a blood debt, or a family operation."You were right. I liked that she depended on me."In front of you, I always remembered that without the Moretti family, I might never have become underboss. Every time she looked at me, she made me feel invincible."Sofia, it isn't that I didn't know you were in pain."I just believed that no matter how much I hu

The Commission did not cancel the next day's meeting. We let Bianca go on believing that Don Vittorio would take the original route to the church. In reality, Don Matteo's three-car escort had locked down the surrounding blocks in advance, and Don Salvatore was already in Russo custody.Bianca walked into the church in the white dress from those engagement photos. She probably still believed that if Enzo saw her looking helpless enough, he would step in front of her as he always had.But waiting at the altar, besides Enzo, were Don Vittorio, Don Alessandro, Don Matteo, and the consiglieri representing five families."Where is Don Salvatore?" Only then did she realize that something was wrong."He has already admitted that you sold the route two years ago." I stood up from the pew and placed the complete evidence on the table. "You used the same backdoor to carry out this port ambush."Bianca looked at me, and the fear drained slowly out of her face."Why do you always get everything?"

Don Matteo's orders reached every corner of the Russo family within three minutes. An escort of four armored cars left the estate, and the capos on both sides of the port sealed every exit at once. I did not ride out to the ambush with them. I stayed in the control room. Two armed Moretti guards held the door and admitted no one whose identity had not been confirmed, while I pulled up every piece of port equipment near the river road. One side of that road was abandoned warehouses, the other was containers stacked and waiting to be loaded. The enemy had chosen it because once a convoy went in, it could not turn around.I took over a remote crane and swung the two outermost containers into the middle of the road. When the lead Moretti car was forced to stop, the shooters hidden in the warehouse opened fire early."Close gate seven and open the maintenance tunnel," I told the operator. "Get everyone out of those cars and back into the port through the underground passage."On the monitor

"Don Matteo, Enzo is at the south port waiting for your wife. He says he won't leave until he sees her."Half an hour later I met Enzo in the port office.Overnight, he had become a different man. He had not shaved, his suit was badly creased, and the underboss pin he had never removed was gone, reclaimed by Don Vittorio."Bianca has been thrown out of the estate." He got straight to it. "I've revoked all her access, and I'll tell the Bellini family the photos are void."I sat behind the desk and didn't have anyone pour him a drink."That's between you and her.""I never touched her." Enzo took a step forward. "The chapel photos were fake. The marriage protection was fake. Everything I did was to pay back what I owed Capo Rizzo in blood.""So as long as you didn't sleep with her, it doesn't count as betrayal?""Sofia—""You gave her my marriage contract, my veil, your name, and your choice in front of everyone. And now you're telling me that because you didn't take off her clothes, I s

On my first day at the Russo estate, Don Matteo set a black seal on my desk."This gives you access to the inner council," he said. "Any decision involving the Moretti ports is yours. When a Russo capo needs your signature, he will come directly to you."I looked at the seal and didn't pick it up right away. For five years, Enzo had said underworld business was dangerous and that he did not want me too involved. He used the Moretti ports while keeping me out of every route meeting. Over time, even I had nearly forgotten that my authority came from the shares my mother had left me."You're not worried I'll hand Russo secrets to my father?""If I can't tell my wife from my enemies, I don't deserve to be don."At my first inner council meeting, two of the older capos saw me sitting at the right side of the round table and exchanged a look of undisguised displeasure.Nico Ferraro, the capo in charge of shipping, slid the route file past me and pushed it straight to Don Matteo. "The capos h

Enzo started forward again. Don Matteo moved half a step closer to me, and every Russo guard along the far wall put a hand on his holster at once."She has already answered," Don Matteo said. "You're dismissed, Underboss."That last word landed on Enzo like a slap.He had always assumed he would be a don soon. In front of Don Matteo, he was still only an underboss who took orders from the head of his family.Don Vittorio climbed the steps at the front of the ballroom. He took another copy of the dissolution agreement from his own consigliere. Its cover bore the red seal of the De Luca don's office in the upper right corner, nothing like the copy Bianca had handled."The original reached me yesterday." Don Vittorio looked at Enzo. "I held off signing until noon today to give you one last chance to save the alliance with the Moretti family. You did not even know negotiations had begun. The Moretti family has now formally withdrawn its ports, its money, and its support."The hall went com
