Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
The dinner ended with the house left in complete disarray.

Linda took her cheque and hummed as she returned to the housekeeper’s room to rest.

My mother-in-law and Sarah sat on the sofa, watching television while ordering me to clean up the mess.

“Put that plate down carefully! It cost a few hundred dollars!”

“Mop the floor properly. How am I supposed to practice yoga tomorrow if there are grease stains?”

Sean had drunk too much and was snoring loudly on the bed in the master bedroom.

I worked until two in the morning before returning to the bedroom with an aching back and sore waist.

I looked at the sleeping man on the bed and suddenly found him completely unfamiliar.

Where had the Sean who used to worry about my hands getting hurt from washing dishes gone? He had even sworn to buy me a dishwasher.

I went to the bathroom to wash up, only to discover that all my skincare products were gone.

In their place was an unopened set of men’s toiletries.

I shook Sean awake. “Where are my things?”

Sean opened his eyes groggily and turned over impatiently.

“Oh, Mom said Sarah’s skin has been dry lately, so she took your SK-II essence and the rest of your products for her.

“You’re at home doing chores every day anyway. Using such expensive skincare would only be a waste.”

My whole body trembled. “Those are my things! How could you take them without asking me?”

Sean abruptly sat up, his brows tightly furrowed.

“Suzanne, can you stop being so petty?

“Sarah is my own sister. What’s wrong with her using some of your things?

“Besides, I’m the one paying for everything you eat, wear, and use, aren’t I?

“Without me, you’d still be a low-level clerk at that lousy company!”

I stared at him in disbelief. “You’re the one paying? Sean, have you forgotten who sold her wedding jewelry to help you…”

“That’s enough!”

He cut me off harshly, his eyes filled with disgust.

“Are you going to bring up something that happened years ago for the rest of your life?

“I could earn that little bit of money back in minutes now! I gave you the status of Mrs. Lowe and let you live in a villa. That’s the greatest repayment you could ask for!

“Stop being ungrateful!”

He pulled the blanket over his head and refused to speak to me again.

I stood beside the bed as tears finally spilled from my eyes.

In his eyes, all my sacrifices were nothing more than “something that happened years ago.”

The woman who shared cheap meals and a cramped basement apartment with him was now nothing but an ‘ungrateful’ wife in his eyes.

The next morning, my mother-in-law’s screams jolted me awake.

“Suzanne! You damned woman! Are you trying to starve me to death?”

I shot awake and glanced at the time. It was only six-thirty in the morning.

Linda used to prepare breakfast at seven.

I threw on some clothes and rushed downstairs.

My mother-in-law stood at the foot of the stairs, holding the “Perfect Wife and Mother” apron. She flung it straight into my face.

“What time is it, and you still haven’t made breakfast? Did you think you earned last night’s reward for nothing?

“Since you accepted the award, you should act like you deserve it!

“Starting today, breakfast for the entire family must be on the table by six-thirty, and you must prepare it yourself!”

Sarah came out of her room with a yawn and leaned against the doorframe to watch the commotion.

“Exactly, Suzanne. Linda is getting old, so you can take care of the menial chores from now on. After all, what other value do you have in this family besides doing the house chores?”

I removed the apron from my face and stared at the four glaring words printed across it.

The last trace of hope in my heart finally went out.

“Fine.”

I answered calmly and picked up the apron before tying it around myself.

“I’ll go make breakfast now.”

My mother-in-law and Sarah exchanged a triumphant glance.

They thought I accepted my fate.

In truth, I was only waiting for an opportunity.

Six months later.I sat on the balcony of my new apartment, sipping coffee as I gazed at the river outside. The apartment was small, but every inch of it belonged to me.There was no mortgage, no arguing, and no suffocating apron.Gordon sat across from me and handed me a document.“Sean’s sentence came down. Eight years.“The villa and the river-view apartment were both auctioned off. The proceeds covered most of his debts.“As for your mother-in-law and Sarah…”Gordon paused, a hint of mockery in his smile.“I heard they returned to their hometown. Without any money, they could only rent a basement.“Sarah became a masseuse at a seedy massage parlor. Your mother-in-law scavenges discarded vegetables at the market every day. She curses you to anyone who will listen and has been beaten up several times.”I listened to all this with surprising calm.I felt no overwhelming joy at having gotten my revenge, only the relief of finally putting everything behind me.“Let them be.”I set down

Sean returned late that night. He looked as if he had aged ten years. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were unfocused. The moment he entered the house, he collapsed onto the sofa.“It’s over… It’s all over…” The tax authorities had confirmed the tax evasion, and the fine was astronomical. The bank froze all his assets, and the suppliers cut off his supply.Worst of all, Desmond joined forces with several major shareholders and ousted Sean from the board.Sean now had nothing left and was burdened with massive debts. My mother-in-law and Sarah surrounded him, wailing hysterically.“My son! How could this happen? What about my apartment?”“Sean! I haven’t even had a chance to enjoy my Porsche! They can’t take it away!”They cared only about their possessions. Not one of them asked whether Sean was tired or hungry.Sean looked at the two women he desperately tried to please and suddenly started laughing. His laughter sounded twisted, almost like a sob.“The apartment? The car? They’

The next morning, a barrage of phone calls jolted Sean awake.“What? The accounts have been frozen?”“The tax auditors are here? They’re going through the books?”“The suppliers are causing a scene downstairs?”Sean’s hand shook around his phone, and his face turned as pale as paper. He did not even have time to change clothes. He rushed toward the company in his pajamas.I sat at the dining table, calmly eating my breakfast.“Honey, what happened? Why are you in such a panic?”Sean glared at me viciously. “Was this your doing? Did you do this?!”“Me?”I put down my spoon and looked at him innocently. “I spend all day cooking and cleaning at home. How could I possibly have that kind of power?“Maybe the universe finally decided to punish you.”“You!”Sean was about to curse me, but his phone rang again. The bank was calling to demand payment on the mortgage and car loan. They warned him that foreclosure and repossession proceedings would begin if he failed to pay.Sean had no time to d

“Bullshit!”Sean was furious and raised his hand to strike me.“This screenshot is obviously new! You set me up!”I took a step back, my gaze turning sharp.“Set you up? Sean, did you make that transfer or not? And were you the one who hired that young escort? If you don’t want people to know, don’t do it!“You did something filthy, so why are you afraid of people seeing it?”Sean’s hand froze in midair, and his face turned a deep purplish red.If this deal fell through, the company’s cash flow would collapse immediately. He forgot all about hitting me and paced anxiously around the living room.“It’s over… It’s over… Mr. Watson is our biggest investor…”My mother-in-law finally understood what was happening and rushed over, reaching to slap me.“You curse! Are you trying to ruining this entire family? I’ll beat you to death, you ungrateful traitor!”I grabbed my mother-in-law by the wrist and shoved her back. She stumbled into the corner of the table and cried out in pain.“That’s eno

Desmond was the host of the business reception that night. He was also Sean’s company’s biggest client.Sean had gone out of his way to curry favor with him, sending him countless gifts and even… women. While organizing Sean’s study, I found a hotel receipt. The date was the day after the reception. The note read: “Hospitality expenses for Mr. Watson (Sarah Lowe).”My heart sank.I hated Sarah, but if Sean sold his own sister for business, he was nothing short of a monster.A closer look revealed another line in smaller print.[Expense reimbursement: Sarah’s designer bag. The escort arranged for Mr. Watson will be billed separately.]I understood everything.Sean had arranged a young escort for Desmond, while Sarah’s bag was hush money.I took photos of all the receipts. That weekend, Sean said he was inviting Desmond and his wife over for dinner. He specifically instructed me to put on a good performance so he could show off his “happy family.”“Make all your best dishes. My mother-in-law was so frightened by my expression that she couldn't speak and collapsed onto the floor.I ignored her and walked out of the river-view apartment. The wound on my leg was still bleeding, but I could not feel the pain. The exhilaration surging from the depths of my soul overwhelmed everything else. When I returned to the villa, Sean and Sarah still had not come home.I calmly treated my wound and changed out of my bloodstained clothes. Then I did something they never would have expected.I washed the “Perfect Wife and Mother” apron until it was spotless, folded it neatly, and placed it back in the gift box.I even sprayed a little perfume on it.Since they wanted to play, I would make the game much bigger.Simply turning the table would let them off too easily. I wanted them to watch helplessly as everything they owned disappeared bit by bit.Sean returned at three in the morning, reeking of alcohol.Sarah followed behind him with several luxury shopping bags in her han
