Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
The densely packed records in the file felt like sharp knives stabbing into my heart.

It turned out that Sean had begun transferring his assets long before the company went public.

He placed most of his shares under his mother’s and sister’s names.

All he left me was this seemingly glamorous villa, which was actually drowning in debt.

He had even drafted a divorce agreement.

The stated reason was “irreconcilable differences and a broken relationship.”

According to the property division section, I would leave the marriage with almost nothing.

He had left me only $20,000, calling it “settlement money.”

$20,000?

That was less than the housekeeper’s annual bonus!

I stared at the screen. My tears had run dry, leaving only fury burning in my chest.

Just then, the study door was suddenly pushed open.

I was startled and quickly closed the computer.

My mother-in-law walked in.

She had not gone to play cards after all. She came to make a surprise inspection.

“Suzanne! What are you doing hiding in the study? Slacking off?”

My mother-in-law waved a feather duster in her hand, the flesh on her face trembling.

“I told you to clean the apartment, and you’re sitting here enjoying the air-conditioning!

“Did you mop the floors? Did you clean the windows? Did you scrub the toilet?”

She rushed over, grabbed me by the hair, and dragged me outside.

“You’re asking for a beating! If I don’t teach you a proper lesson, you’ll forget who’s in charge!”

Pain shot through my scalp as she dragged me until I stumbled and fell.

My knee slammed against the floor, sending a sharp pain through my body.

“Mom! What are you doing?” I instinctively resisted and shoved her.

My mother-in-law took advantage of the moment and threw herself onto the floor, screaming and carrying on.

“Help! She’s trying to kill me! My daughter-in-law attacked me! Sean! Come home and see this! This ungrateful wretch is trying to kill your own mother!”

She wailed as she grabbed the vase from the table and hurled it at me.

It smashed beside my feet.

The shards sliced into my calf.

Blood immediately gushed from the wound.

I sucked in a sharp breath from the pain. As I stared at the bright red blood, the tightly wound thread in my mind suddenly snapped.

This time, I did not cry or beg for mercy.

I simply stared at the hysterical old woman on the floor.

I looked at the mansion bought with the profits Sean made from the startup capital I raised by selling my wedding jewelry.

I looked at the apron that symbolized my enslavement.

It turned out that yielding would never earn me respect. It would only encourage them to trample me even more.

It turned out that the so-called “perfect wife and mother” was nothing more than a fig leaf for everything they took from me.

They had shown me no mercy, so I would show them none in return.

I bent down and picked up a sharp shard of glass from the vase.

I weighed it in my hand.

My mother-in-law’s screams abruptly stopped. She stared at me in terror.

“What… What are you planning to do?”

I walked toward her, a smile spreading across my face.

It was a cold smile, like one worn by a demon that had crawled out of hell.

“Mom, didn’t you say the floor had to be polished until it could reflect someone’s face?

“Fortunately, blood makes floors shine the brightest.”

My mother-in-law backed away in terror until her back pressed against the corner.

I took out my phone in front of her and dialed a number.

I did not call Sean.

I called Gordon, my high school classmate who became a lawyer and once pursued me.

“Hello, Gordon.”

My voice was frighteningly calm.

“Draft a divorce petition for me. I want a divorce. And investigate the tax issues at Sean’s company. I have evidence.”

After hanging up, I looked at my trembling mother-in-law and gently straightened her collar.

“Mom, you can keep cleaning this place yourself from now on. I’m done serving you.”

Six months later.I sat on the balcony of my new apartment, sipping coffee as I gazed at the river outside. The apartment was small, but every inch of it belonged to me.There was no mortgage, no arguing, and no suffocating apron.Gordon sat across from me and handed me a document.“Sean’s sentence came down. Eight years.“The villa and the river-view apartment were both auctioned off. The proceeds covered most of his debts.“As for your mother-in-law and Sarah…”Gordon paused, a hint of mockery in his smile.“I heard they returned to their hometown. Without any money, they could only rent a basement.“Sarah became a masseuse at a seedy massage parlor. Your mother-in-law scavenges discarded vegetables at the market every day. She curses you to anyone who will listen and has been beaten up several times.”I listened to all this with surprising calm.I felt no overwhelming joy at having gotten my revenge, only the relief of finally putting everything behind me.“Let them be.”I set down

Sean returned late that night. He looked as if he had aged ten years. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were unfocused. The moment he entered the house, he collapsed onto the sofa.“It’s over… It’s all over…” The tax authorities had confirmed the tax evasion, and the fine was astronomical. The bank froze all his assets, and the suppliers cut off his supply.Worst of all, Desmond joined forces with several major shareholders and ousted Sean from the board.Sean now had nothing left and was burdened with massive debts. My mother-in-law and Sarah surrounded him, wailing hysterically.“My son! How could this happen? What about my apartment?”“Sean! I haven’t even had a chance to enjoy my Porsche! They can’t take it away!”They cared only about their possessions. Not one of them asked whether Sean was tired or hungry.Sean looked at the two women he desperately tried to please and suddenly started laughing. His laughter sounded twisted, almost like a sob.“The apartment? The car? They’

The next morning, a barrage of phone calls jolted Sean awake.“What? The accounts have been frozen?”“The tax auditors are here? They’re going through the books?”“The suppliers are causing a scene downstairs?”Sean’s hand shook around his phone, and his face turned as pale as paper. He did not even have time to change clothes. He rushed toward the company in his pajamas.I sat at the dining table, calmly eating my breakfast.“Honey, what happened? Why are you in such a panic?”Sean glared at me viciously. “Was this your doing? Did you do this?!”“Me?”I put down my spoon and looked at him innocently. “I spend all day cooking and cleaning at home. How could I possibly have that kind of power?“Maybe the universe finally decided to punish you.”“You!”Sean was about to curse me, but his phone rang again. The bank was calling to demand payment on the mortgage and car loan. They warned him that foreclosure and repossession proceedings would begin if he failed to pay.Sean had no time to d

“Bullshit!”Sean was furious and raised his hand to strike me.“This screenshot is obviously new! You set me up!”I took a step back, my gaze turning sharp.“Set you up? Sean, did you make that transfer or not? And were you the one who hired that young escort? If you don’t want people to know, don’t do it!“You did something filthy, so why are you afraid of people seeing it?”Sean’s hand froze in midair, and his face turned a deep purplish red.If this deal fell through, the company’s cash flow would collapse immediately. He forgot all about hitting me and paced anxiously around the living room.“It’s over… It’s over… Mr. Watson is our biggest investor…”My mother-in-law finally understood what was happening and rushed over, reaching to slap me.“You curse! Are you trying to ruining this entire family? I’ll beat you to death, you ungrateful traitor!”I grabbed my mother-in-law by the wrist and shoved her back. She stumbled into the corner of the table and cried out in pain.“That’s eno

Desmond was the host of the business reception that night. He was also Sean’s company’s biggest client.Sean had gone out of his way to curry favor with him, sending him countless gifts and even… women. While organizing Sean’s study, I found a hotel receipt. The date was the day after the reception. The note read: “Hospitality expenses for Mr. Watson (Sarah Lowe).”My heart sank.I hated Sarah, but if Sean sold his own sister for business, he was nothing short of a monster.A closer look revealed another line in smaller print.[Expense reimbursement: Sarah’s designer bag. The escort arranged for Mr. Watson will be billed separately.]I understood everything.Sean had arranged a young escort for Desmond, while Sarah’s bag was hush money.I took photos of all the receipts. That weekend, Sean said he was inviting Desmond and his wife over for dinner. He specifically instructed me to put on a good performance so he could show off his “happy family.”“Make all your best dishes. My mother-in-law was so frightened by my expression that she couldn't speak and collapsed onto the floor.I ignored her and walked out of the river-view apartment. The wound on my leg was still bleeding, but I could not feel the pain. The exhilaration surging from the depths of my soul overwhelmed everything else. When I returned to the villa, Sean and Sarah still had not come home.I calmly treated my wound and changed out of my bloodstained clothes. Then I did something they never would have expected.I washed the “Perfect Wife and Mother” apron until it was spotless, folded it neatly, and placed it back in the gift box.I even sprayed a little perfume on it.Since they wanted to play, I would make the game much bigger.Simply turning the table would let them off too easily. I wanted them to watch helplessly as everything they owned disappeared bit by bit.Sean returned at three in the morning, reeking of alcohol.Sarah followed behind him with several luxury shopping bags in her han
