Chapter 2

作者: Echo
What happens when two people who forged their love in a storm of blood and bullets find that passion eroded by years of quiet days?

I asked him that question when he proposed.

He was quiet for a moment, then he took my hand and kissed it gently.

"I don't think we'll ever fall out of love," he said. "And if we do, it'll be you getting tired of me."

"Scarlett, you're the only light in my goddamn dark life."

"Without you, there's no Cassius."

"I'll be true to you for the rest of my life."

In his old life, there was only the mother who sold him for cash, a cold father with countless bastards, and brothers who wanted him dead.

He was weak and alone, forced to lick his wounds in the shadows whenever he got hurt.

Until I found him on the street one day, bruised and battered. I handed him some ointment. "You okay?"

He looked so pathetic, it broke my heart. I started seeking him out.

The more I did, the more I saw him getting pushed around. Some stupid, heroic part of me made me stand in front of him, even though I couldn't fight worth a damn back then.

"Why are you helping me?" Cassius once asked, his voice laced with confusion.

I gave him a hopelessly romantic answer. "Because it's fate."

"Cassius, do you believe in fate?"

"No," he said quietly. "But if fate is what brought you to me, then I'm grateful for it."

When Cassius got home, I was on the balcony, smoking.

The smoke swirled around me. He frowned, snatched the cigarette from my fingers, and crushed it under his shoe.

"Why are you smoking?"

His jaw was tight. "Scarlett. Talk to me."

"I was thinking about that maid of yours."

I asked him, "Cassius, can you get her out of the manor?"

"Why?" He looked stunned, but there was something else hidden in his eyes that I couldn't be bothered to decipher. "She's a decent worker…"

"I don't like her," I repeated. "Cassius, get rid of her. I don't want to see her near you again."

Cassius stared at me for a long moment, then a slow chuckle escaped him. "Jealous?"

"Fine. I'll have her removed. We'll get a new one. Happy now?"

He tapped my forehead with his knuckles, his voice laced with exasperated fondness.

"We're not kids anymore. Our kids are five years old, Scarlett. Are you really getting jealous over some maid? Come on."

I smiled but didn't answer.

Later, in bed, we talked about the children for a minute, and then… silence. Nothing left to say.

As I was drifting off, I heard him whisper.

"Scarlett… this life… it's pretty damn boring, isn't it?"

The room was silent for the rest of the night.

Cassius kept his promise. Lily was gone the next day.

He started coming home earlier, too. He was constantly around me, teasing me for being too sensitive, like a moody cat.

Life seemed to be getting back on track.

I was swamped with the Family's legitimate businesses and quickly pushed the incident to the back of my mind.

Until our daughter's riding lesson.

I called Cassius. It was noisy on his end. I asked what was wrong. He sounded tired. "It's nothing."

"Something's come up. I can't make it. Take the guards with you. I'll bring you back a gift."

"Okay. Be safe."

I hung up.

That afternoon, I went to our private hospital to pick up my check-up results.

At the end of the hall, I saw her. The maid he'd fired.

She was nursing a twisted ankle, wincing with every step, and Cassius himself was at her side, helping her walk.

She looked at him with total dependence, murmuring, "Thank God for you, Mr. Vance. I know I shouldn't be a bother, but I don't have any other family or friends in New York. I didn't know who else to call…"

Cassius was not a patient man, but his expression was incredibly gentle. "It's fine. You're not a bother."

Lily blushed even deeper.

I stood there, watching from a distance. I didn't go over.

After they left, I had one of my bodyguards follow them.

The guard didn't report back until that night.

He said Cassius took Lily to the supermarket and bought her groceries.

He said Cassius held her arm the whole time to steady her. She tried to get closer, but Cassius always sidestepped her attempts.

I looked at the photos of them walking side-by-side, their occasional glances, and I was silent for a very long time.

I rejected Cassius's proposal."No matter what you say, I'm not reconsidering our relationship. Please leave.""You know me. When I make a decision, I never go back."The light in his eyes died.It was as if he had fallen into an endless darkness, from which he would never recover. To be honest, when we divorced, I had a feeling he might regret it.His mother took the money and left after he was born. His father never loved him. He craved a happy, complete family more than anyone. And he'd had the vasectomy. The chances of having more kids, even with a reversal, were slim and complicated. Only I could give him the perfect family he wanted.I just didn't expect him to regret it so quickly. After I rejected him, he left, completely dejected. The next time we met, he asked to see me at a coffee shop. He was back to his old self: a cold, imposing Don in a tailored suit.He seemed calm, clear-headed, doing everything by the book.I breathed a sigh of relief. A man in his thirties shouldn't

I asked him:"Before the divorce, you said we'd been together too long, that you were bored of me. That you were only good to me because I saved your life.""And now you say you love me? Doesn't that sound absurd?"He looked down, his fingers fidgeting on his knees. His eyelashes fluttered. "I'm sorry," he said weakly."I think my head was messed up back then. I was wrong… I'm sorry."I nodded. "People's minds change. I get it.""But, Cassius, how can you be so sure that in a few months… no, a few days… you'll still feel the same way?""Maybe as soon as you walk out that door, you'll think I'm old and boring, nothing compared to those young, fresh girls, and you'll regret ever coming here."He had nothing to say.He couldn't argue.A year ago, when he wanted a divorce, he never would have imagined he'd be here now, begging for my forgiveness. He couldn't even predict his own feelings for me. That was the most painful part.He could only stare at me, his eyes full of desperation.I sigh

The days that followed were peaceful.Money, kids, a career, and no husband. Life was liberating. And being away from the Family business gave me a sense of security I hadn't realized I was missing.I didn't have to worry that my husband could be killed at any moment. I didn't have to deal with all that trouble. It was only then that I realized I had never liked the Mafia life.I had just ignored it, for Cassius. After a period of silence, Cassius's love life exploded in the tabloids.Mob princesses, movie stars, even young models…The whole underworld was talking. They'd never seen anything like it. How repressed had he been before to be letting loose like this now?And with it, they started calling me a jealous shrew.I paid it no mind.At another banquet, I went alone.I saw Cassius. His date was a different woman from the one in the last news story.A lot of people were looking at me, probably hoping to see the ex-wife go crazy, get jealous, and throw the new girl out.I only said

I smiled. "I don't know.""I started seeing you because I wanted to know if I could be drawn to that feeling you give off.""And it seems the answer is no."So many times, when I was with him, I found myself thinking I'd rather be at home reading with my kids, or handling business. The thrill of the new couldn't compare to a fraction of the peace I got from my routine."I used to think my ex was the asshole. That he was the one who changed, who wronged me, and that's why we split.""It's only in the last few days that I've started to understand. Our personalities were never a match. We were thrown together by chance, and now we're just reverting to our natural states."He loves excitement, novelty. Passion is essential for him.For me, it's whatever. I even find it a little annoying. We were never right for each other.Beside me, Jake listened with his head down.I looked at him and said softly,"Actually, I came here today to tell you something.""We're done.""I'll continue to sponso

Touching his face was… a thing, between me and Cassius. His jaw was hard, but his skin was smooth. When I was tired, or when we were being close, whispering secrets, I always liked to cup his cheek and feel his warmth, as if it brought us closer. But that was before. Now, I just stared at the drunk in front of me. "How much did you drink?"He was out of his mind.I called for his bodyguards to come get him.Cassius didn't want to go.He grabbed my sleeve. "Why won't you touch me?"I asked the guards, "Can you just knock him out?"They looked at me, helpless.I took a deep breath and put on a gentle voice. I smiled at him."Be a good boy. Go with them. I'll come find you in a little bit, okay?""But I want to be with you," he whined."If you keep this up, I'm never speaking to you again."I hardened my face. As expected, he panicked and let go of my sleeve. "No, no, I'll be good. I'll listen. Just don't leave me…"He went with the guards.I stood there, a little dazed. He hadn't acted l

  • He Got Bored, so I Got Younger   Chapter 8

There was a business dinner that night. I had Jake escort me as my date.At the party, a lot of people pointed at me, whispering about him. He'd clearly never been in a situation like this. He moved closer to me, his voice timid. "Scarlett…""It's fine." I patted his hand reassuringly.Cassius was there too. His date was some mob princess with a powerful family. She clung to his arm, shooting me a triumphant look.I ignored it.I went to chat with a business partner. When I turned around, Jake was gone.I looked around and found him on a dimly lit terrace. A group of spoiled sons from minor families, all loyal to Cassius, were surrounding him, mocking him."You didn't start screwing her before the divorce, did you?""What's your secret? You're not even that good-looking. How'd you land the Don's ex-wife?""Ex-wife? She got dumped. I can't believe she still has the nerve to show her face here."…"Are you finished?"My cold voice cut through their laughter. I kicked over a nearby table.
