Chapter 1

The air-conditioning in the Clover Club card room was running full blast, and the shuffling of cards at our table drowned out every other sound.

"Sierra, look at this! That bastard Ethan!"

My best friend, Wendy Lawson, shoved her phone in my face. On the screen was a photo that hurt to look at.

It showed a yacht by the river and a crowd of elegantly dressed people. My husband, Ethan Fuller, was down on one knee, slipping a huge diamond ring onto his secretary Yvette Shelton's finger.

The caption read, "Here's to the rest of our lives."

In an instant, the table went so quiet that the only sound left was the hum of the air conditioner.

"Isn't… Isn't that Mr. Fuller?" Mrs. Walton, who was sitting across from me, covered her mouth. "He and Ms. Shelton… Is this… Is this a proposal?"

"A proposal? That's not even the half of it!" Wendy snapped, her chest heaving with anger as she pointed at Jordan Yancey, who was beaming in the photo.

"Look at these men. They all teamed up to make a fool out of you. Jordan told me he had a company team-building event tonight, but it turns out he's off playing wingman at his buddy's proposal party!"

Another woman at the table leaned in for a look, then sighed. "Sierra, back when Ethan was pursuing you, everyone at Larkwood University knew about it. How did it come to this…"

"Men turn rotten the minute they make a little money. Every last one of them," another chimed in. "And when Ethan started his company, didn't he have your family backing him?"

"I've met that Ms. Shelton," a third added. "She looked so sweet and innocent. Who knew she was that kind of slut?"

"What are you going to do, Sierra?" Wendy asked. "You can't just let this go!"

Outraged on my behalf, they started mapping out ways for me to rip my cheating husband and the other woman to shreds.

I simply listened quietly, my gaze resting on the cards I'd been dealt. Among them was the ace of diamonds.

I looked up at Wendy, who was so angry she was close to tears. A faint smile tugged at my lips, and I pushed a stack of chips into the pot.

"Raise."

When the women saw me like this, their cursing slowly died down. They exchanged glances, at a loss for words, and the mood at the table turned strange.

When it was time to draw, I exchanged my only non-diamond card. Its replacement was the ten of diamonds.

After the final round of betting, I laid my hand face up on the table.

Every card was a diamond.

"Read 'em and weep."

As they stared at me in shock, I added evenly, "A flush. Just my luck."

…

Bag in hand, I pushed open the front door.

The living room light was on, and Ethan was sitting on the couch, apparently waiting for me. The moment I walked in, he got to his feet, smiling as gently as ever. "You're home. How was your luck tonight? Did you win or lose?"

Ignoring him, I walked straight over to the coffee table, took the thick wad of cash I'd won out of my purse, and slapped it down with a loud smack. "Thanks to you, my luck was incredible."

I looked at him and smiled back. "A fat wallet and one less husband to worry about. Looks like my luck really is turning around."

Ethan's smile froze for a second before he laughed it off. "What are you talking about? That kind of joke isn't funny."

"A joke?" I took out my phone, unlocked it, pulled up the screenshot I'd saved, and held it up to his face.

The yacht, the diamond ring, Ethan down on one knee, and Yvette smiling sweetly—all of it stood out on the screen so clearly that it hurt to look at.

I shut the door, sealing out Ethan's desperate screams and cries. The world fell silent.…The court's ruling came quickly.Ethan had cheated during our marriage and maliciously transferred our joint assets, causing me immense mental and physical harm. The evidence was clear and convincing. As the party at fault, Ethan walked away with almost nothing. The house I'd poured so much of my life into was now mine. "Enough with your crocodile tears. Do you think this is over?"I walked to the coffee table, grabbed a thick envelope, and slammed it down in front of him."Take a look. This is a copy of what I submitted to the court. I have investigated all the shady business you and Jordan have done—asset transfers, fabricated debts. I have solid evidence for all of it."Ethan's head snapped up. His hands trembled as he opened the envelope. The moment he pulled out the documents, all color drained from his face."How… how did you get these internal financial records?" he asked."Did you forget? I was the one who kept the books when the company just started. I recorded every single transaction myself. Do you think keeping me at home, away from the office, would cut me off from the outside world?"You forgot about the suppliers you offended with your arrogance. You forgot about the longtime employees whose bonuses you withheld." I looked down at him. "All of this was a 'gift' from them.""No, S

He had clearly just escaped a chaotic mess at the office and didn't even have time to put on his coat."Sierra, what the hell are you trying to do? Tell me! Stop using the baby as a weapon to attack me!" he demanded furiously.I ignored his shouting and turned to pull out an old phone from the study. It was the phone I'd used when I was pregnant. I'd kept it ever since but hadn't used it again until now.I unlocked the screen, opened a photo, and held it out to Ethan."Remember this picture?"On the screen was a photo from a birthday party. The background was an elegantly decorated private karaoke room, with a huge birthday cake sitting in the middle.Ethan and Yvette had their heads close together. He was leaning down to listen to what she was saying, while she tilted her innocent face up. The way the light fell made it look like she was kissing his cheek. The timestamp sat in the bottom-right corner. It was the day I had my miscarriage.Ethan's eyes widened in shock."Whe

They didn't resort to insults. Instead, they let the evidence speak for itself.Mrs. Bennett posted a screenshot of Yvette's Instagram post from a month ago. It was a photo of her partying at a club, with the caption, "Single and loving it. Let's drink till we drop!"The post was dated a month earlier. Then, Mrs. Morgan posted several photos of Yvette smoking at different dinner gatherings, smiling brightly. Her behavior hardly matched her claims of putting her baby first. One of our friends even dug up Yvette's old social media account from her college days.On that account, she posted her "achievements" of juggling several men at once, claiming she was broke as an excuse to get them to buy her designer handbags and other expensive gifts.Wendy delivered the final blow by tagging Yvette."Ms. Shelton, you keep saying you're doing all this for your baby. When you were out partying, smoking, and drinking, did you ever think about your 'innocent baby'? Or do you think the baby is

I sent her a short message. "Chloe, there has been some unusual activity in the company's accounts lately. You're still new, so be careful. Don't sign anything you're not sure about, and make sure you protect yourself." 30 minutes later, an anonymous email landed in my inbox. It contained an encrypted ZIP file.I tried an anniversary date Ethan and I had once used as a password. The file unzipped immediately. It was an internal financial ledger, recording every fund transfer and where the money went.My blood ran cold as I stared at the recipient's name for the largest payment for the so-called debt. The recipient wasn't Yvette or any of Ethan's relatives. It was Jordan!I forwarded the file and its password to Mr. Carter. After that, I took the time to brew myself a cup of tea.Jordan was Ethan's most trusted friend and the key person in the asset transfer. Now, the payment trail leading to his most trusted ally had become crucial evidence against him.Ethan and Jordan st

Over the next few days, I went about my life as usual, as if that farce outside my door had never happened.Wendy, on the other hand, called three times a day to report on what Ethan and Jordan were up to."Listen to this, Sierra. That idiot Jordan actually went along with Ethan, and now he's helping him figure out how to move his assets!"He even bragged to me about it, going on about how it's all for one and one for all. Give me a break! More like a couple of crooks in cahoots. I hope they both get struck by lightning!"…Two days later, Mr. Carter called me, his tone serious."Ms. Jameson, things aren't looking too good. The asset list Mr. Fuller's side submitted is full of holes, but according to the company's books, they recently incurred a huge debt to an outside party. It's drained most of their working capital.
