Chapter 2

Author: Enlightened

A bitter smile tugged at the corner of my lips.

So that was it.

I recognized the name. Chloe James was a senior executive at Julian’s firm.

Driven, razor-sharp, and wildly ambitious. She was everything I used to be.

I raised my eyes to meet with his. "How long has this been going on?"

Julian didn't even flinch.

"That’s irrelevant," he said, cool as ice. "What matters is that she fits every metric I require in a partner.

"She advances my career, expands my network, and biologically speaking, offers superior genetics for our children."

The sheer absurdity made my head spin.

"Because she’s younger, prettier, and richer?" I scoffed. "Do you have any self-respect left?"

Julian rubbed his temples, sighing softly. "Don't get emotional, Clarissa. Volatility was another deduction on your review."

A sharp, hysterical laugh escaped me. "Are you insane, Julian?"

He frowned, opening his mouth to lecture me again.

I didn't give him the chance. I slammed the bedroom door behind me.

Outside, midnight fireworks echoed into the sky while I tossed and turned, only drifting off as dawn broke.

When I woke up, a woman was sitting on our living room couch.

Chloe James.

Julian walked out of the bathroom, drying his hands. He glanced at me indifferently.

"I thought about it last night," he said. "Making a unilateral decision isn't entirely fair to you.

"So Chloe and I discussed it. We're taking you both to my parents' house today.

"I'll observe you side-by-side to determine who is truly better suited for this marriage."

My eyes widened in absolute disbelief.

Chloe actually chimed in, offering a sleek, polished smile.

"Clarissa, Julian’s doing this for your own good," she said gently. "You’ve stagnated for two years. You've lost your competitive edge.

"If you perform well today, you might still have a fighting chance."

I glared at her. "And you’re playing along? Doesn't wrecking a home embarrass you at all?"

She tilted her head and gave a soft chuckle. "Your marriage was already failing. Stepping in now isn't home-wrecking. It's taking an opportunity."

I had never heard anyone spin bullshit so naturally.

Julian checked his watch, impatience creeping into his voice. "Clarissa, don't waste time. Are you coming or not?"

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

His parents had always treated me decently. I decided to view this as my final goodbye to them.

I nodded.

On the way out, Chloe slipped straight into the front passenger seat.

Before shutting the door, she glanced back at me with a smirk. "Opportunity favors the bold, Clarissa."

I slid into the back seat, expressionless.

When we arrived at his parents' house, Chloe stuck close to Julian's side.

To anyone passing by, they looked like the married couple coming over for the holidays.

Carrying armfuls of holiday gift boxes several steps behind them, I looked like their hired help.

Before I even reached the doorway, his mother’s cheerful voice boomed from inside.

"Chloe, darling! You’re finally here! Your father-in-law, I mean, my husband has been talking about you all day!

"Come in, come in! Hurry, close the door, it’s freezing outside!"

Thud.

The front door shut firmly in my face.

I stood frozen on the landing, laden with heavy boxes.

From that warm, familiar tone, this was clearly not Chloe’s first visit.

Yet I had been kept entirely in the dark.

Even though I was the one who nursed them through every illness, they had never once mentioned her name.

A wave of cold laughter welled up inside me.

I laughed at my own stupidity for letting this entire family play me like a fool for so long.

Fine.

If this was the farce they wanted, I was done playing the clown.

I packed up my documents."If it's about work, sure. If it's personal, don't bother."Julian spoke up quickly. "It's work. Well... not entirely."I looked up at him.He took a deep breath. "I want to hire your firm to redesign Vance Enterprises' management framework."Our operational efficiency has tanked. Cross-departmental communication is broken, and our client churn rate is skyrocketing."I cut him off. "And?"Julian’s voice dropped. "I know it's a huge stretch asking you."But nobody understands our company's core like you do. And seeing what you've built, I know what you're capable of."You're better than any top consultant we've ever hired."I snapped my folder shut. "Julian, do you know what my firm charges?"A flicker of hope lit up his eyes. "I do. I'll pay double your standard rate."I stood up. "It's not about money. I'm simply not interested."Your company, your infrastructure, your crisis, none of it is my problem anymore."Julian scrambled to his feet, pani

She yanked at Julian's arm, whispering something harsh under her breath.Julian shoved her hand away and walked straight toward me.The room fell quiet, eyes darting between the three of us.He stopped in front of my desk, holding a small gift box in his hands."Congratulations," he said quietly. "On the new launch."I didn't reach out to take it. "Thank you. I appreciate the thought."Julian’s hands froze mid-air.He looked around the room, taking in the room full of high-profile industry executives.A deeply complicated expression washed over his eyes."I had no idea..." he murmured

The project launched without a single hitch. The hospital held an intimate celebratory dinner, placing me at the head table alongside the medical director and several department heads.Halfway through the evening, I stepped out to use the restroom. In the quiet corridor, I caught sight of Julian. He stood alone by the bay window, gazing out at the city skyline. His silhouette looked surprisingly hollow.I intended to walk right past him, but he turned and spotted me."Clarissa," he called out.I stopped. "Do you need something?"Julian took a few steps toward me.Under the hallway lights, dark circles shadowed his eyes. He looked noticeably thinner than he was on the day of our divorce."My father's follow-up," he said, searching my face. "Did you rearrange it for him?"I raised an eyebrow. "What makes you think that?"Julian kept his eyes fixed on mine."The hospital suddenly notified me that his original slot was restored with the chief of neurology."When I asked who p

I stepped through the surrounding crowd.Julian sat in a wheelchair, his face drawn and exhausted.Chloe stood in front of him, unleashing a torrent of rage on a group of nurses."What's going on here?" I asked calmly.Everyone turned to look at me.Chloe froze for a second when she caught sight of me, her expression instantly twisting into a sneer."Well, well. Clarissa. What, are you working as an orderly at the hospital now?"The head nurse quickly stepped in to clarify. "Ms. Reid is our chief system design consultant.""A consultant?" Chloe raised an eyebrow. "Her?"Julian looked up, a quick flash of utter shock darting across his eyes.I ignored Chloe completely and addressed the head nurse. "What are the details?"The nurse handed me a tablet. "Mr. Brassfield had an appointment with Dr. Ford in neurology for two o'clock this afternoon."However, our system logs show the reservation was shifted to two o'clock tomorrow."We pulled the activity trail, and the appointm

Julian’s father looked pale, taking slow, labored steps. His recovery clearly wasn't going well.Chloe trailed beside them, staring at her phone with a heavy frown. She didn't even notice when the old man stumbled over his own feet.Julian caught his father just in time, shooting Chloe a sharp remark. She finally put her phone away, though irritation flushed across her face.I pulled my gaze back and turned to Mr. Brassfield. "Let's go."Mr. Brassfield had spotted the group ahead, too."Isn't that your ex-husband?" he asked softly. "Want to say hello?"I turned toward the opposite hallway. "Not interested."Unfortunately, the more you try to avoid someone, the more fate would keep forcing a meeting. We bumped into each other right at the elevators.Julian froze when he saw me.His eyes darted from the heavy contract folder in my arms to Mr. Brassfield standing beside me, a deep crease forming between his brows."Clarissa? What are you doing here?"I kept it brief. "Work.

I calmly sorted through the paperwork on my desk."I have no idea. Shouldn't your father's medical affairs be handled by Chloe now?"Julian paused on the line."She's been very busy at work," he said. "She doesn't have time for these trivial chores.""Trivial chores."I repeated the phrase, letting out a dry chuckle."So taking care of your parents is just a trivial chore? Then why did you make it a key metric in my performance review?"Julian's tone grew ice-cold. "Clarissa, I'm not here to argue over the past."The hospital said you arranged the original slot, so only you can handle the rescheduling."I smiled into the phone. "I could. Except I won't."Julian clearly didn't expect such a blunt response."Clarissa!" he snapped. "Do you have to be so childish? This is my father's health we're talking about!""And?" I countered smoothly."Julian, we're divorced. Your family, your parents, and your precious marriage system have nothing to do with me anymore."Julian choke
