Chapter 4

Author: Enlightened

It rained heavily on the day we finalized the divorce.

I had forgotten to take an umbrella, leaving me drenched to the bone.

Once the mandatory waiting period expired, the paperwork went by quickly.

Holding the thin divorce decree in my hand, I watched expressionlessly as Julian and Chloe walked hand-in-hand toward the marriage registration desk.

By the time they walked back out, I was still standing under the eaves, waiting for the storm to pass.

Taking in my disheveled appearance, Chloe smirked. "Clarissa, do you need Julian to drive you home?"

I shook my head gently. "No, thank you."

Her smile remained, though a flicker of mockery gleamed in her eyes.

"This is why women need their own careers and financial independence.

"A housewife who depends entirely on someone else and refuses to wake up... well, she's destined to be discarded in the end."

I offered her a faint smile in return.

"Well said, Chloe. I just hope an independent, wide-awake woman like you never gets 'performance-managed' out of the picture."

She brushed off my remark with a quiet laugh and adjusted her arm around Julian's before walking away.

Julian didn't look at me once, treating me like a stray pebble on the curb.

He never used to be like this.

We were college sweethearts. He was the one who pursued me back then.

He used to say that my drive and determination shone brighter than all the stars in the night sky.

Truth was, I felt the exact same way about him.

We were both passionate idealists.

We spent our free time volunteering together and pooled our savings to support causes we believed in.

We promised each other that we would excel in our respective careers and meet at the summit.

When did everything start to change?

It was probably when his father suffered that sudden heart attack.

The hospital had a long waitlist for surgery, but his father didn't have time to wait.

Julian had been frantic, begging anyone he knew for help, only securing a slot when a distant relative pulled some strings.

That evening, he crouched in the hospital stairwell, smoking a cigarette.

"Clarissa," he told me, his eyes hollow. "I finally got it now. Ideals and emotions are all meaningless fluff.

"In this world, power and leverage are the only things that truly matter."

After that, he became a different person.

Colder, sharper, and deeply self-interested.

He began quantifying everything in his life, including himself.

And now, he even had a calculated justification for his own infidelity.

How ironic.

The ring of my cell phone snapped me out of my thoughts.

I answered, hearing a familiar voice on the line.

"Clarissa, is the paperwork done?

"The client specifically requested you for this project. Should I send a car over to pick you up?"

A real smile finally touched my lips. "Yes, please. Thank you, Mr. Brassfield."

What Julian never realized was that I had never truly abandoned my career.

For the past two years, I had been working remotely as a high-level consultant.

My field revolved around designing tailored operations and management systems for elite corporate clients.

I didn't need to sit in an office to deliver results.

Even that "marriage system" he was so proud of was built ground-up by my professional expertise.

I used to believe our home would be my proudest project.

It was my greatest failure as it turned out.

Let's see, Julian.

Without me holding the pieces together, let's see how long your picture-perfect life actually lasts.

I packed up my documents."If it's about work, sure. If it's personal, don't bother."Julian spoke up quickly. "It's work. Well... not entirely."I looked up at him.He took a deep breath. "I want to hire your firm to redesign Vance Enterprises' management framework."Our operational efficiency has tanked. Cross-departmental communication is broken, and our client churn rate is skyrocketing."I cut him off. "And?"Julian’s voice dropped. "I know it's a huge stretch asking you."But nobody understands our company's core like you do. And seeing what you've built, I know what you're capable of."You're better than any top consultant we've ever hired."I snapped my folder shut. "Julian, do you know what my firm charges?"A flicker of hope lit up his eyes. "I do. I'll pay double your standard rate."I stood up. "It's not about money. I'm simply not interested."Your company, your infrastructure, your crisis, none of it is my problem anymore."Julian scrambled to his feet, pani

On the grand opening day of my firm, the studio was packed.Mr. Brassfield sent a massive floral arrangement, and the hospital director arrived in person to offer his congratulations.Half the industry’s heavyweights filled the room.Amidst the bustling crowd, I spotted two uninvited guests.Julian and Chloe stood by the entrance, hesitating to step inside.Chloe’s face was twisted in anger. She yanked at Julian's arm, whispering something harsh under her breath.Julian shoved her hand away and walked straight toward me.The room fell quiet, eyes darting between the three of us.He stopped in front of my desk, holding a small gift box in his hands."Congratulations," he said quietly. "On the new launch."I didn't reach out to take it. "Thank you. I appreciate the thought."Julian’s hands froze mid-air.He looked around the room, taking in the room full of high-profile industry executives.A deeply complicated expression washed over his eyes."I had no idea..." he murmured

The project launched without a single hitch. The hospital held an intimate celebratory dinner, placing me at the head table alongside the medical director and several department heads.Halfway through the evening, I stepped out to use the restroom. In the quiet corridor, I caught sight of Julian. He stood alone by the bay window, gazing out at the city skyline. His silhouette looked surprisingly hollow.I intended to walk right past him, but he turned and spotted me."Clarissa," he called out.I stopped. "Do you need something?"Julian took a few steps toward me.Under the hallway lights, dark circles shadowed his eyes. He looked noticeably thinner than he was on the day of our divorce."My father's follow-up," he said, searching my face. "Did you rearrange it for him?"I raised an eyebrow. "What makes you think that?"Julian kept his eyes fixed on mine."The hospital suddenly notified me that his original slot was restored with the chief of neurology."When I asked who p

I stepped through the surrounding crowd.Julian sat in a wheelchair, his face drawn and exhausted.Chloe stood in front of him, unleashing a torrent of rage on a group of nurses."What's going on here?" I asked calmly.Everyone turned to look at me.Chloe froze for a second when she caught sight of me, her expression instantly twisting into a sneer."Well, well. Clarissa. What, are you working as an orderly at the hospital now?"The head nurse quickly stepped in to clarify. "Ms. Reid is our chief system design consultant.""A consultant?" Chloe raised an eyebrow. "Her?"Julian looked up, a quick flash of utter shock darting across his eyes.I ignored Chloe completely and addressed the head nurse. "What are the details?"The nurse handed me a tablet. "Mr. Brassfield had an appointment with Dr. Ford in neurology for two o'clock this afternoon."However, our system logs show the reservation was shifted to two o'clock tomorrow."We pulled the activity trail, and the appointm

Julian’s father looked pale, taking slow, labored steps. His recovery clearly wasn't going well.Chloe trailed beside them, staring at her phone with a heavy frown. She didn't even notice when the old man stumbled over his own feet.Julian caught his father just in time, shooting Chloe a sharp remark. She finally put her phone away, though irritation flushed across her face.I pulled my gaze back and turned to Mr. Brassfield. "Let's go."Mr. Brassfield had spotted the group ahead, too."Isn't that your ex-husband?" he asked softly. "Want to say hello?"I turned toward the opposite hallway. "Not interested."Unfortunately, the more you try to avoid someone, the more fate would keep forcing a meeting. We bumped into each other right at the elevators.Julian froze when he saw me.His eyes darted from the heavy contract folder in my arms to Mr. Brassfield standing beside me, a deep crease forming between his brows."Clarissa? What are you doing here?"I kept it brief. "Work.

I calmly sorted through the paperwork on my desk."I have no idea. Shouldn't your father's medical affairs be handled by Chloe now?"Julian paused on the line."She's been very busy at work," he said. "She doesn't have time for these trivial chores.""Trivial chores."I repeated the phrase, letting out a dry chuckle."So taking care of your parents is just a trivial chore? Then why did you make it a key metric in my performance review?"Julian's tone grew ice-cold. "Clarissa, I'm not here to argue over the past."The hospital said you arranged the original slot, so only you can handle the rescheduling."I smiled into the phone. "I could. Except I won't."Julian clearly didn't expect such a blunt response."Clarissa!" he snapped. "Do you have to be so childish? This is my father's health we're talking about!""And?" I countered smoothly."Julian, we're divorced. Your family, your parents, and your precious marriage system have nothing to do with me anymore."Julian choke
