Chapter 2

Author: mountain
My parents were the Alpha and Luna of the Red Hill pack. They'd never approved of Ethan as my mate. We'd had a huge fight about it, and I'd left with him for Goldstone without their blessing. I closed my eyes and reached for our link.

When the link opened again, I heard my father's worried voice. "Sienna, we heard a rival pack attacked your territory. Are you okay? Are you hurt?"

"I'm okay."

They kept going. "Are you still with Ethan?"

I thought about it before I answered. "Mm-hm."

My mother's voice came through, urgent. "Your father and I talked it over. If you'll come home, we'll give you our blessing. We'll arrange the mating ceremony ourselves."

Talking to them made me feel a little better, so I settled into the reception room and started scrolling on my phone.

Everybody was posting pictures of their food from the shelter with captions like, "Evacuating, but at least our Alpha's keeping us fed!"

I looked at all those bright, mouthwatering photos, and my stomach growled. Only then did I remember I hadn't eaten dinner.

But the office was empty, so I tried to ignore my hunger.

While I was scrolling, a coworker texted me. "Sienna, is that your mate?"

He sent me a photo of Maya with her arm hooked through Ethan's. The table in front of them was covered in food. Her caption read, "His cooking is so good, I can't get enough of it."

I typed back, "Not anymore."

Glass shattered somewhere down the hall. I rushed out of the reception room and saw that the shelling had reached the building. Several windows had been blown out by the blasts.

Smoke came pouring in. I ran back into the reception room and shoved the couch against the door and window.

It looked like the end of the world out there. I took out my phone and called Ethan again.

The phone rang and rang. Just when I thought he wasn't going to answer, he finally picked up.

Before I could say anything, Ethan said quickly, "Sienna? Hang on a second. I'm a little busy right now."

I was scared, and the words tumbled out. "Ethan, I'm still at the office. The shelling's getting closer. The windows are shattering. I'm so scared. Can you stay on the phone with me?"

All I could hear was noise on his end. I had no idea what he was doing. After a while, his voice came back. "What? I can't hear you. Just stay in the safe zone. I'm busy right now. I have to go."

A second later, Maya's voice came through, sounding hurt. "Eth, is there anything you're not good at? You're amazing at video games too."

Ethan sounded resigned. "You went easy on me, that's all. If you hadn't, I wouldn't have won that fast."

"Then will you cook for me again tomorrow?"

"Okay, okay."

I pushed down my fear, but the ache in my chest hurt even more.

I couldn't lie to myself anymore. Everything I'd given him over the years meant less to him than a coworker he'd known for two years.

I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms.

I stayed silent for a long time. When my phone slipped to the floor, I didn't even pick it up.

After a while Ethan spoke up again. "Hello? Sienna, are you still there?"

When I didn't answer, Maya said, "It's probably just a bad signal. It's fine.

"Eth, come on, let's keep playing."

Then the call ended.

The shelling continued outside. Smoke reached the window, and I stood there frozen, my face blank.

I barely got the words out. "Ethan, I regret all of it."

The shelling drowned out my words.

After that day, Ethan camped outside my building. I'd been staying at the hotel with my parents the whole time. One day I had to go back for a few things, and Caleb came with me.From down the block, I could see Ethan waiting outside the door. I frowned.Caleb spoke up. "It's fine. He won't try anything with me here."I looked into his clear eyes and felt calmer, though I couldn't explain why."Okay. Thanks for coming."He gave me a small smile, and we walked toward Ethan.Ethan's eyes widened in disbelief when he saw Caleb with me.He came running over anyway."Please, give me a few minutes. Can we talk?"He used to be so polished, the center of attention at the office. Now he was pale and hollow-eyed. The only spark of life in him appeared when he looked at me.Caleb and I exchanged a look. "It's fine," he said. "It's up to you. I can keep you safe."I smiled a little and agreed to hear him out.We sat down inside, with Caleb off to the side, watching Ethan.Ethan's voice was ragged.

Third Person's POV:Everyone stared at him, shocked."Didn't Sienna say you two were over? You always said she'd come back once she cooled off. You never had to do anything, did you?"Ethan froze."I said that?"Heads nodded all around the room."You did. At the holiday party. You spent the whole night feeding Maya, and Sienna got angry and left early."Maya even told you to go after her, and that's when you said it."The room erupted, and everyone started talking at once."And there was the time Sienna got hurt and asked you to take her to the hospital. You told her to tough it out because you were throwing Maya a birthday dinner. You said the injury was minor and she'd get better soon without going to the hospital."One after another, they mocked him."We all think you're really something, Ethan. Your own mate, and you couldn't even be bothered to help her. If it were me, I'd have broken the bond a long time ago."One of the women thought of something."You've been telling everyone s

Third Person's POV:The next day, Ethan returned to the office and kept staring at Sienna's desk. His coworkers watched and whispered. They all knew what he'd been up to and were secretly pleased to see him like this. He'd tried every other way to reach her after she blocked him, but she'd blocked him everywhere. He figured she'd only blocked him because she was angry. She'd come back for sure.Days went by, and he still showed up on time every morning, hoping he'd see her at her desk. But this time, three days had passed without a word from her. He'd told Gerald what had happened that night, and his father had told him to stop harassing Sienna. That was when the fear finally hit him. He might have actually lost her.In the past, she'd eventually speak to him when she was angry, even if she sounded a little cold. But the last time he'd seen her, a few days earlier, she'd looked at him as if he were a stranger.Back when she got angry about Maya, part of him had been pleased. It meant s

After dinner, we said goodbye to Caleb. The fighting had left my apartment badly damaged, so I went back to the hotel with my parents. That night my phone kept lighting up. Ethan's messages came in one after another."Sienna, is this because I didn't come to get you? I really do care about you. I texted you earlier and told you to go to the nearest safe zone.""Or is it because you don't like going to company parties? If that's the case, I'll tell my dad. You won't have to go to any more if you don't want to.""Please stop being angry. I'm sorry. I still want you as my mate.""Maya really is just a friend. I've only been trying to look out for her. And you never get mad at me because of her.""I was wrong. Will you forgive me? Don't leave me."I read his messages, my expression calm.I never used to get mad at him because back then he only had eyes for me. He never gave me a reason. What I couldn't let go of was the man he'd once been. But he'd changed. Ever since Maya showed up, I'd b

Inside the room, we were talking and laughing.Caleb sat next to me and kept serving me food. He asked how life in Goldstone had been treating me, as if nothing had happened in the hall.My parents watched us with relieved smiles."Caleb hasn't changed a bit since he was little. He's always been the one looking out for everyone. Take good care of Sienna for us."I smiled a little and let it go."You two seem to get along well. Give it a few more months, then go ahead with the mating ceremony. Your mother and I will finally be able to sleep easy."I looked over at Caleb. He looked so happy, and the warmth in his gaze almost made me melt.I looked down and kept my voice low. "Dad, isn't that a little fast?"My father laughed out loud."All right, all right. It's up to you. Whenever you want."That was when Ethan, who'd been listening at the door, couldn't take it anymore and shoved his way in."No. I don't agree to this. Sienna is supposed to be my mate."The room went dead quiet. My mot

On Saturday afternoon, the company announced a mandatory team event at the biggest hotel in Goldstone. It seemed odd, but I went.I opened the door to a dark room, and then the lights came on."Maya, congratulations..."Everyone stood with party poppers raised, but no one set them off.I didn't understand."What are you all doing?"Ethan quickly pulled me aside and switched the lights off again. "Keep your voice down. It's a surprise party for Maya. She's about to get promoted."My voice turned icy. "So this whole thing is for Maya, and everyone had to show up for it?"He was listening for the door to open and didn't notice my tone."Yeah. I had my father set the whole thing up. It took a lot of work."I laughed."Ethan, I don't want to see you again."The party poppers and cheers drowned me out. As Maya came through the door, I walked out.First thing the next morning, my parents told me they'd arrive that afternoon and we'd have dinner with Caleb Thorne.Caleb was the son of the Gold
