Chapter 6

Author: Lone Raining Cloud
Joseph squeezed my throat until I could barely breathe, but I wasn't afraid.

I met his murderous glare with a confident smile and forced out the words. "Joseph, the game is just getting started."

His grip tightened. "You have a death wish!"

"Joseph, stop!"

Rebecca rushed over, lifting the skirt of her wedding gown. She wasn't worried about me. She was worried about those billions of dollars.

"Lillian, give Joseph his money back! What you're doing is a crime!"

I gave her a cold glance.

The thugs immediately dropped their swagger when they saw me. They stepped aside respectfully."Zero."I gave them a slight nod and walked over to Joseph. He was sprawled on the ground, covered in blood. His hair was filthy and sticking out in every direction, and he reeked. There was no trace left of the powerful man he had once been in Beymont. He struggled to raise his head. The moment he saw me, humiliation and regret flashed in his eyes, along with a flicker of wild hope.He reached out to me with a mud-caked hand. "Lillian... y-you came to save me, didn't you? Deep down, you still care about me, don't you?"I scoffed at what a pathetic joke he'd become. "Save you? Joseph, are you delusional? I only came to see how you like where you've ended up."I pointed at the psychiatric hospital behind me."Recognize this place? Two weeks ago, this was where you tried to force me to sign those psychiatric evaluation papers. You said that if I admitted I was crazy, you'd leave Noah al

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows on the top floor of the club. From there, I watched the scene unfold below, completely unmoved.Miguel asked respectfully, "Zero, should we make them leave?"I shook my head. "No. Let them tear each other apart. Oh, and what's happening with Joseph's debts?"Miguel flipped open the cover of his tablet. "We've bought up every debt Joseph owes. You're his sole creditor now. The total comes to 35 billion dollars."I nodded, satisfied. "Good. First thing tomorrow morning, have the court seize every asset in his name, including the mansion he's living in. I want him out on the street.""Yes."The next morning, Joseph woke up under an overpass. His whole body ached, and his face was covered in scratches. He reached into his pocket and found that his phone was dead.He staggered to his feet and headed back to his estate. It was the last place he had left. But when Joseph reached his estate, he stopped cold.An official court notice had been po

Joseph looked like regret was eating him alive. He turned sharply toward me. His eyes were red, and tears ran down his face with the rain."Lillian... I'm sorry. I didn't know. I really didn't know."He reached for my pant leg."Don't touch me."I stepped back, and the bodyguards immediately moved in and pinned him to the ground."Joseph, your apology is worthless. You think saying you're sorry can erase everything I went through in that psychiatric hospital? You think it can undo what you did to Noah's right hand?"I looked down at him without a trace of pity."I gave you a chance. I warned you back at the psychiatric hospital. You were the one who slammed the door on your last chance."Joseph stayed on his knees in the mud, begging desperately. His knees were scraped raw, blood mixing with the rainwater."Please, Lillian. We were together for three years. Doesn't that mean anything to you? Give me one more chance. I'll give you Stout Group. I don't want anything else. I only

At the sound of my voice, Joseph went rigid. He lifted his head in disbelief, his gaze traveling up from my heels to my tailored slacks, my slim waist, and finally my face, one he knew all too well. The truth seemed to hit him all at once. His eyes flew wide, and his lips trembled. For a moment, he couldn't get a word out.At last, he found his voice. "L-Lillian?"Joseph slumped back into the muddy water and stared at me like he'd seen a ghost. "What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be in the psychiatric hospital?"He shook his head hard, refusing to believe what he was seeing. "No. You can't be Lillian. You're Zero's stand-in, aren't you? Zero must be keeping you. That's why you've gotten so bold!"I looked down at Joseph, watching him desperately cling to his own ridiculous version of the truth. I said nothing.Miguel stepped forward beside me and gave him a cold look."Show some respect. This is Zero, a top financial powerbroker who controls the global underground

The door to the private suite opened, and Noah walked in. His right hand was wrapped in bandages, but he looked much better. He came over to me. "Lillian."I set down my wineglass, got to my feet, and steadied him. "Noah, does your hand still hurt?"He smiled. "Not anymore. The doctor said if I take it easy and let it heal, I'll still be able to paint."My eyes stung. "I'm sorry, Noah. You got hurt because of me."Noah gently patted my head. "Don't be silly. As long as you're safe, a little injury is nothing."He looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows. "What are you going to do about Joseph?"I scoffed. "His business empire is what he cares about most, isn't it? Then I'll make him watch as I bring it down piece by piece."Someone knocked at the door. One of the bodyguards stepped inside. "Zero, Joseph is downstairs. He doesn't have an invitation, so security stopped him at the entrance. He says he'll agree to anything if you'll see him."I lifted my glass and took a sip of w

Bringing up the past was the worst thing Rebecca could have done.Joseph snapped. He shot to his feet, grabbed her by the throat, and slammed her down onto the desk."You have the nerve to bring that up? You think I don't know you've been secretly moving properties out of my name? Rebecca, do you really think I'm blind?"Rebecca struggled for air, beating at his arm with both hands. "L-Let go of me! Joseph, you're insane!"Joseph's bloodshot eyes were wild with desperation. "I am insane! I had Lillian locked in a psychiatric hospital because of you. I lost everything because of you. And now you're trying to profit off my downfall?"He abruptly let go.Rebecca crumpled to the floor, coughing violently. She looked at the man who had once seemed untouchable, and contempt flashed in her eyes."Joseph, stop blaming me for everything. You were the idiot. You were the one who never figured out who Lillian really was. The company's bankrupt now. What are you taking it out on me for?"S
