Chapter 4

Author: J.X cross
Before I can say anything, Leah bursts into tears and runs out of the house.

Victor frowns at me.

“Stop making trouble.”

Then he casually shoves a business card into my hand.

A tattoo removal clinic.

“When you have time, go get it removed.”

Then he turns and goes after her without looking at me again.

I don’t even look at the card. My heart is terrifyingly calm. I lift my hand and toss it into the trash.

Then I call Elena.

“I want a divorce from Victor.”

“And don’t tell him about the surgery yet.”

Her reaction is far more intense than mine. I can barely calm her down.

“Has he lost his mind? Taking the side of that fake little bitch?”

“Do you need me to do anything? Have you told him?”

I actually laugh.

“No. He probably won’t agree. I’ll find a lawyer first. I’m moving out tomorrow.”

“He won’t agree? What the hell gives him the right not to agree?”

I smile bitterly.

She doesn’t understand.

These are the eyes of the woman he loved. How could he ever bear to let them leave?

I draft the divorce agreement.

Print it. Sign it. Quickly. Cleanly.

Once I’m done, my phone suddenly rings.

“Ivy, the Academy still won’t approve your explanation. Mostly because they already have a new candidate.”

“Oh, and your husband personally recommended her.”

My chest tightens.

I struggle to speak.

“Who?”

“A girl named Leah Valenti. I heard your husband wrote her a recommendation letter that was over two thousand words.”

I don’t hear another word after that.

My eyes fall on the corner of the living room.

A piano sits there.

Victor bought it for me when I was supposedly rejected. He told me then that he would always be my audience.

My eyes burn.

I laugh. And the tears won’t stop.

The next second, I grab the piano bench and slam it down onto the keys.

Sometime after midnight, I wake to a faint, crackling sound.

I sit upright in bed.

My hand flies to my collarbone. The skin is numb.

They gave me an anesthetic.

My tattoo is gone.

The skin beneath my collarbone is swollen and burning, and the pain is slowly pushing through the numbness.

Victor’s gaze darkens.

But before he can say anything, Leah laughs.

“Victor asked me what he could do to make me forgive him.”

“I told him I wanted that black rose under your collarbone removed. Because you don’t deserve to wear the family crest on your body.”

She smiles.

“I didn’t expect Victor to agree without even thinking twice.”

I’m shaking with anger.

Victor, however, looks completely justified.

“Tattoo ink residue isn’t good for your eyes.”

“Ivy, I did this for your own good.”

My eyes turn red.

I almost laugh from anger.

But before I can answer, Leah rubs her stomach and starts to whine.

“Okay, okay. I’m not mad anymore.”

“Come on, Victor. Let’s get something to eat. I have my piano recital tomorrow.”

She pushes him toward the bedroom door.

But Victor suddenly stops.

“Ivy, I had the kitchen make you the seafood chowder you like. You should come eat too.”

“Oh, and I remember you play the piano too. I’ll take you to Leah’s recital tomorrow.”

I look toward the mirror.

My gaze falls on the swollen, red skin beneath my collarbone. I can’t bring myself to look away.

I’ve never liked seafood chowder.

I’m allergic to shellfish.

I get up and start packing.

By the time I walk out of the house, it is exactly midnight.

The mug with Victor and Selena’s photograph is sitting in the center of the coffee table.

The house has gained another thing he carefully treasures.

I take off my wedding ring.

Without expression, I drop it into the mug.

Then I call Elena again.

“Schedule the second corneal transplant for tomorrow.”

I’m giving him back the eyes of the woman he loved.

From now on, I will belong to no one but myself.

The next morning.

A notification appears on Victor’s phone.

[NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital: Pre-operative information for patient Ivy Moretti’s second corneal transplant. Please have an authorized family member arrive for verification.]

Leah’s face goes completely still.Instinctively, she grabs Victor’s sleeve. The Mafia world has its own rules. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t have called the police. But I’m no longer part of the family. And Leah never was part of that world.Victor is silent as he gently pulls his sleeve from her hand. Then he walks toward me and places a hand on my arm before I can leave.“Ivy.”The name comes out with difficulty.“Leah is young. She’s impulsive. This time... can you let it go?”Slowly, I raise my eyes.“Let it go?”A voice tight with anger comes from behind me.Elena rushes over. She has clearly heard the last thing Victor said. She steps in front of me and looks at him coldly.“Why should she let it go? Because you’re the Don of the Moretti family?”“How did you propose to Ivy? You made all of New York believe you loved her more than your own life. And what did you actually do?”“You approached her because of Selena’s eyes. You controlled her for five years”“And because o

He looks like he wants to say something else. But I don’t want to hear it.Elena walks in and steps between him and the bed.Her voice is completely flat.“Victor, she just had surgery. If you still care about her health, leave now. She can’t cry.”Victor’s face slowly loses all color. In the end, he says nothing. He turns and walks out of the room. After the door closes, Elena sits beside me, her face full of concern.A fine, persistent pain still throbs behind my eyes. But for some reason, I feel lighter.Elena looks at my pale face, and her eyes slowly turn red.I smile instead.“It’s okay.”“Really.”“No guilt. And I don’t have to feel like I’m just a container for someone else’s eyes anymore.”“It’s good.”“Everything is good.”After I am discharged from the hospital, I contact a moving company.Elena helps me with everything, keeping an eye on the movers while I handle the rest.In the middle of a phone call, I suddenly tell her,“Take the two perfume bottles from the bottom of t

Victor throws open the hospital room door.I have just been helped into a sitting position by a male medical assistant, my shoulder still resting against his arm.The next second, Victor’s voice cuts through the room, cold as a blade.“What are you doing?”His eyes are bloodshot as he strides forward and slaps the assistant’s hand away. The assistant drops the chart in his hand.My brows draw together instantly.Victor catches the small reaction. His face suddenly goes pale.I don’t explain.I simply lean back against the pillows.“What are you doing here?”His jaw tightens. There is a slight movement beside us.The medical assistant bends down, picks up the chart, and discreetly steps toward the door.“Mrs. Moretti, I’ll give you two some privacy. Press the call button if you need me.”The door closes softly behind him.A moment later, Victor reaches for my hand.He tries to put the wedding ring back on my finger.I pull my hand away. Victor takes several quick steps forward and snatches the ring from Leah’s hand. The cold metal digs into his palm.A fear unlike anything he has ever felt races through his fingers and up his arm.Leah only sneers.“So what? You had one ugly tattoo removed. Did she really have to take off her wedding ring over something so small? My sister would never have made such a big deal out of it.”“Victor, even if you couldn’t find someone exactly like my sister, you shouldn’t let a woman like that walk all over you. If it weren’t for you and my sister, she might have gone blind years—”“Enough!”Victor’s voice cracks through the room.Leah goes pale. But he doesn’t look at her again. He closes his fist around the ring and starts toward the stairs. Then the doorbell rings. Maybe it was always meant to be. These eyes and I were never truly meant for each other. The rejection had been going on for a long time. I should have told Victor the moment it started. But I never expected him to reveal another truth first.A crueler one.Outside the operating room, Elena holds my hand tightly. Her eyes are red, but her voice is steady.“Ivy, don’t worry. Trust me. I won’t let anything happen to you.”I stare at her for a moment. Then I suddenly smile. So this is what it sounds like when someone is truly worried about you.Not like Victor, who only ever says—“Nothing will happen to these eyes.”The anesthetic slowly enters my bloodstream. The lights above me blur and spread across my vision.Just before my consciousness slips away completely, I remind Elena one more time.“When they remove the corneas... give them back to him.”When Victor wakes up, the sky is already bright. His temples throb from his hangover. He drank quite a bit with Leah last night. After walk
