Chapter 2

Author: Stars
Looking back on the five months since Beatrice joined the company, Frederick had practically dumped all of her work on me.

Beatrice had never gone to school and only got in through connections. She made a mess out of every assignment, and I had to clean up after her every time.

She once replaced the fine wine prepared for a client with a milkshake.

At a business dinner, she swapped the main dishes with caramel pudding and strawberry cake.

When the client saw that, he turned around and left, causing the deal I had spent two weeks negotiating to fall apart instantly.

In the end, I had to drink with the client until my body couldn't take it anymore, just to seal the deal.

However, at the year-end awards ceremony, Beatrice still outshone me and walked away with the Best Employee award.

I was the one doing all her work, yet I got nothing, while she raked in bonus after bonus.

One time, she got drunk at a banquet and made a scene. The media caught it on camera, and it damaged the company's reputation. Yet Frederick blamed me for not stopping her from drinking.

All the blame fell on me, while all the credit went to her. How was that fair?

I was shaking all over with rage.

I had been with Frederick for five years, but he never once admitted publicly that I was his fiancee. There wasn't a single photo of us on social media, and he acted as if he didn't even know me at every banquet.

I had asked him about it before, but all he said was, "I like to keep a low profile. When we get married, I'll make it public and let everyone know you're Mrs. Scott."

For the sake of that promise, I waited year after year. Even now, everyone in the company still thought I was nothing more than his mistress.

"She's just Mr. Scott's secret lover, and yet she actually has the nerve to act like his wife."

"Who knows how messy her private life is? Mr. Scott must know she isn't presentable, which is why he never acknowledges their relationship in public."

I could only pretend not to hear their gossip, yet my heart grew colder with each passing day.

I should have known all along. Everything Frederick did made it clear that he didn't love me, so there was no need for me to keep humiliating myself.

Frederick noticed my darkening expression and coaxed me gently. "Ellie, don't worry. I won't keep you waiting long. Once Beatrice is promoted next year, I'll make you the department manager."

I stayed silent. In my heart, I no longer had a shred of trust in Frederick.

Frederick said, "Alright, stop sulking. You're already the CEO's fiancee. For a small position like this, be gracious and let the newcomer have it.

"Look at Beatrice. It's not easy for her to care for her younger brother all on her own. It's only right that you help her out a bit."

My chest felt unbearably tight. In Frederick's eyes, Beatrice always came first, even far above me, his own fiancee.

At that moment, Frederick received a phone call. His face immediately softened into a gentle smile. "Beatrice, have you finished handling everything on your end? Great, I'm coming over now."

He left with a radiant smile. It was the kind of warmth he had never once shown me.

Frederick wandered into the company in a daze, unsure how much time had passed. He found the company in utter chaos. After investigating, he discovered that Beatrice had misused the company's funds and messed up the projects she was handling. The company was now on the verge of collapse.Frederick stormed into Beatrice's office and yanked her out of her seat. "Look at what you've done! If you want to ruin yourself, don't drag the entire company down with you!" he shouted. His eyes were bloodshot as he shoved her to the ground.Beatrice stared at him in horror, still trying to put on a pitiful act. "No, I didn't do anything. It was the employees below me who falsified the accounts on their own."Frederick pulled out a document with Beatrice's signature in black and white. Her face went ashen the moment she saw it, and she instantly collapsed to the floor."How do you explain this?"Frederick tossed the document in her face. "You'll compensate for all the company's losses."Bea

Ever since Eliot and I made our relationship official, he had shown his care for me openly. He brought me breakfast every day, picked me up and dropped me off at work, and even surprised me with little gifts from time to time.Just as I thought our life would stay this peaceful, I saw Frederick on the steps outside the company, where he had been waiting for quite some time.I frowned, pretended not to notice him, and pulled Eliot with me to leave. To my surprise, Frederick reached me before I could walk away.I had no idea how long he had been looking for me. Judging by his disheveled clothes, haggard face, and untrimmed beard, it was clear that he hadn't been doing well during that time."Ellie, who is he?" Eliot asked."He's my ex-boyfriend," I replied.Frederick's expression darkened when he heard that. "Ellie, we haven't broken up. I'm still your fiance."He reached out to grab me, but I dodged him in one swift move. His hand awkwardly hovered in midair before dropping bac

Since I took the company's core technology with me and the proposal I left behind was incomplete, Beatrice's project soon ran into trouble.By then, the company was already in complete chaos."Ms. Sutton, Mr. Smith, who was supposed to work with us, suddenly changed his mind and terminated the contract. We don't have enough funds for the project, and we can't keep it going. What should we do?"An employee came over with some files for Beatrice to sign.At that moment, Beatrice hadn't realized how serious the situation was, and she was still happily admiring her freshly done nails. When the employee handed her the files, she said slowly, "So what if they terminated the contract? It's no big deal. We're such a big company. Do we really need to rely on them?"The employee looked troubled. "But what should we do without funds?""How could a company this big possibly have no money at all? Go get the funds from the finance department and put them into the project," she said."But—"

I got off the plane and saw Eliot Brown waiting for me at the airport the moment I stepped out.He walked forward and took the suitcase from my hand. When our fingers touched, he froze for a second."Why are your hands so cold?" he asked.I quickly slipped my hands into my pockets and shook my head. "It's nothing."He unwrapped his scarf and wrapped it around my neck. "You've always been sensitive to the cold since you were a child," he said softly."Let's get in my car. I have hot coffee in there," he added.Long-lost warmth filled my heart, and I felt it spread through my body. My eyes unexpectedly grew a little misty. Ever since Frederick and I successfully started the company, no one had treated me with such tenderness.Once we got into the car, Eliot looked hesitant, yet after a brief pause, he finally spoke in a quiet voice."Ellie, I know you've been treated unfairly in the company. I've always wanted to help you out, but you're Frederick's fiancee. I was afraid that I m

The trip to the beach was utterly dull, and the two of them treated me like I didn't even exist.Still, that suited me just fine. With no one to bother me, I could enjoy a brief moment of peace by the beach on my own. After the vacation, I returned to the office only to find the items on my desk replaced with Beatrice's. My work files had been packed up and tossed aside.I knew for sure that Frederick did this. Sure enough, before I had the chance to confront him, a message from him popped up on my phone. "Beatrice was just promoted to department manager, and she needs a new office. Your spot has the best light, so let her have it."I replied, "Got it."Then I silently gathered my files. At the same time, Frederick stared at my message, lost in thought. In the past, I would definitely throw a fit. However, after observing me for the past few days, he noticed that my reaction was unusually calm. A strange sense of unease crept into his heart."Aren't you angry?" he asked."Yo

The next day, at the company's promotion banquet, Beatrice walked onto the stage in a custom gown Frederick had given her.At the same time, the giant screen behind lit up with wedding photos of her and Frederick. The employees below instantly erupted, applauding and offering their congratulations.Frederick held Beatrice's hand and slowly stepped forward. "I now announce that Beatrice Sutton is officially the department manager."Frederick intertwined his fingers with hers, raising them above their heads. The dazzling rings gleamed even brighter under the flashing lights."There is another piece of good news. Beatrice and I are getting married," he added. The crowd below began cheering loudly."No wonder Mr. Scott waited until now to announce the promotion. Turns out he wanted to give us double the good news.""Mr. Scott and Beatrice are such a perfect match, unlike certain people who only know how to cling to him."It didn't take much thought to know that the "certain people
