Chapter 3 "It's fine. I can manage on my own."

Auteur: Zora
I said it to Kane, and I said it to myself.

I hung up and called a rideshare home.

Kane didn't come home that night.

Fireworks went up outside the window. I picked up my tablet and saw the Instagram post Lillian had shared an hour earlier.

In the photo she stood in the middle of an outdoor rink Kane had rented out for her. Fireworks filled the sky and fell across the ice, and Kane's captain's jacket hung over her shoulders.

The caption was one line. "Seven years away, and somehow both the rink and someone were still waiting for me."

I didn't scroll through their messages. I simply logged out of the Instagram account Kane had left open on the tablet.

The next day, I arrived at the jewelry studio right on time.

My manager held my resignation letter, and when she heard I was going home to get married, she was happy for me and sorry to lose me at the same time.

"I'm losing my best designer."

I smiled and hugged her.

For Kane I had turned down better jobs overseas and stayed in New York for seven years. Leaving felt like taking back the part of my life that had been pinned down.

When my coworkers heard, they jokingly demanded one last dinner on me. I booked the steakhouse we always went to.

Halfway through dinner, I went to the restroom and ran into Lillian again.

She smiled gently. "What a coincidence. This is where Kane took me on our first date back in college. After all these years his taste hasn't changed at all."

I nodded politely and started to go.

She stepped into my path, and her eyes traveled slowly from my face down to my waist.

"Does Kane still blend you a peanut butter shake before bed?"

I stopped.

Lillian laughed softly. "Back when people used to hit on me at the rink, he'd say he wanted to feed me until nobody looked at me anymore. But I wouldn't listen to him, and I wouldn't give up skating for him."

"I never thought he'd do the same thing to you."

Cold crept into my fingertips.

"What's your point?"

"It just seems like a waste." She tilted her head at me. "You really used to look like me. The way you look now, doesn't kissing you disgust him every time?"

I met her eyes. "Whether he can stand to kiss me is his problem. My body isn't yours to judge."

She pinched the fabric of my dress between her fingers.

"The dress doesn't suit you either. A knockoff is still a knockoff. You can use the finest fabric in the world and it will never be the real thing."

I slapped her hand away. "If you have to humiliate me to prove you're the real thing, then you're not very impressive either."

Lillian clearly hadn't expected me to stay this calm, and her smile stiffened for a second.

I stepped around her and went back to our private dining room. The sound of my coworkers laughing slowly thawed the chill in my veins.

Not long after, the door was shoved open.

Kane stood in the doorway in his practice gear, bits of unmelted frost clinging to the hair on his forehead.

His gaze locked on me immediately, his expression thunderous.

"Erin. Outside."

  • He Made Me His Plus-Size Stand-In, I Married Someone Else   Chapter 11 Three months into our marriage, my weight had not budged for six full weeks.

I shoved my dinner away in frustration. Theo slid the bathroom scale aside and set the box containing the finished Aurora necklace in its place. "One less number to look at won't stop you from making jewelry.""You're not going to tell me to eat?""You're not a pet I'm raising." He pushed the fork back into my hand. "If you faint from hunger, I'll just laugh at you."Ten months later, I had gone from two hundred pounds to a hundred and twenty, and all my abnormal health markers had returned to normal.I hadn't turned back into the Erin of twenty-one. I had only learned again what I liked, and when to say no.Aurora became the family jewelry brand's best seller that year, and it won me the North American Emerging Jewelry Designer Award.A year later, the New York Storm asked me to design a commemorative pin for their charity fund.On the day of the launch, I walked back into that old rink in a silver gown of my own design, and the people who had once laughed at me could barely recognize

  • He Made Me His Plus-Size Stand-In, I Married Someone Else   Chapter 10 Kane was still shouting my name while security walked him off.

I didn't look back. Theo acted like nothing had happened at all, took my hand, and headed for the car. "Let's go shopping.""Now?""What else?" He glanced at me. "Stay here and sort out the garbage?"Ethan came right after us. "I'm in a bad mood too. Take me with you."Theo shut the car door and nearly caught Ethan's nose in it.On the drive, I almost explained those seven years several times.Theo tapped the steering wheel. "You don't have to report the past to me. I'm not here to run a background check.""You really don't mind?""I mind."My chest tightened. He turned his face toward me, his voice lazy. "I mind that you said I'm a better man only once. Say it two more times."I couldn't hold back a laugh. On the day of the wedding, my dress had to be taken in another inch at the last minute. In that one month I had lost forty pounds, and I never again let any fabric hide me.Theo stood at the end of the flower-lined aisle, his gaze fixed on me."What are you looking at?""What I'll b

"No."Kane let the flowers fall. Then whatever had been holding him upright seemed to break, and he sank to his knees."Erin, I admit that at first I used you as Lillian's stand-in, but that changed. You're the one who waited for me to come home for seven years. You're the one who patched me up. You're the one I wanted to see most after every road game.""Those two days I couldn't reach you, I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep. I searched all of New York. I was going out of my mind."He set the bracelet down at my feet, his voice breaking."After all those nights that belonged only to us, can you really throw them away as if they meant nothing?"I looked down at him. His sincerity had come too late; now it felt more absurd than his lies."Kane, when you look at me, is it really only me you're seeing?"While clearing out my closet before I left, I realized that the red dress, the jewelry, and even my hairstyles were almost all modeled on Lillian's taste. There was never any natural resembl

  • He Made Me His Plus-Size Stand-In, I Married Someone Else   Chapter 8 Kane was silent for a long time before he said quietly, "Lillian and I are in the past. I just want to talk to Erin."

Ethan slammed on the brakes."Kane, you hid a seven-year relationship with my sister from me. You used her as a stand-in, and you still had the nerve to tell her to apologize to Lillian?""It isn't what you think—""Then what is it? She stayed in New York for seven years because of you. Did you ever once make the relationship public? Did you ever stand in front of the whole team and call her your girlfriend?"Kane's breath caught. Ethan cut the call and threw the phone into the console tray.He turned and stared at me. "What exactly happened between you two?"I knew I couldn't hide it anymore, so I told him all of it: the seven secret years, Lillian, and the weight-gain plan.By the end, Ethan's eyes were red.He slammed a fist into the steering wheel, and after a long moment he reached over and pulled me in. "This is on me. I should have told you who Lillian was, and I should have come to see you a long time ago.""It isn't on you," I said quietly. "I'm the one who read his silence as

  • He Made Me His Plus-Size Stand-In, I Married Someone Else   Chapter 7 I had just opened the door when Ethan came charging in.

He looked at Theo's soaked clothes, then at the towel in my hand, and his expression darkened instantly."Theo, what did you do to my sister?"Theo lay back against the couch without bothering to lift his eyelids. "If you'd shown up two hours later, you might have had something worth getting angry about."Ethan's fist clenched."He didn't do anything." I got between them fast. "I'm the one who called the doctor."The family doctor showed Ethan the exam results proving that Theo had been drugged. Only then did Ethan grudgingly lower his fist.Theo buttoned his shirt. He was still unsteady when he stood, but he apologized formally to my parents first, then had his assistant turn the hotel's security footage and the drug sample over to the police. Before he left, he stopped in front of me."I owe you one for tonight.""How do we settle that?""Come collect when you've decided." He glanced at Ethan. "As long as your brother doesn't set the price for you."On the way home, Ethan finally tol

  • He Made Me His Plus-Size Stand-In, I Married Someone Else   Chapter 6 Kane stepped back outside and checked the number on the door again.

When he went back in, the place was the same stark black and white it had been seven years earlier. He ran into the bedroom and yanked the closet open, then turned and tore through the bathroom, the storage room, and my workbench. Not one thing of mine was left.He called me, and a recorded voice told him again and again that the phone was off. Then he opened Instagram. Our chat was still there, but tapping my name led to a blank profile marked "User not found."Seven years of life had been cleared away so completely that he half wondered whether he had invented me.In a daze, Kane remembered the Life360 circle we had shared. The map now read "Location Sharing Paused," but the history still ended on the night of the championship party two weeks earlier. That night I had stood outside the team lounge for seventeen minutes, less than seventy feet from him, and then left alone.Kane stared at the date, and his fingers began to shake. The phone slipped out of his hand and the screen shatte
