Chapter 4 I followed Kane out into the hallway.

Auteur: Zora
He stopped and asked, his voice tight with anger, "Why did you push Lillian?"

"Her ankle is hurt. Do you have any idea what another fall would do to her?"

I looked at him and didn't rush to explain the way I always used to.

My silence rattled him. Without realizing it, he softened his voice. "Erin, just apologize and this is over."

"I didn't push her, and I'm not apologizing to her."

I turned to leave. He stepped into my way on instinct, but he never touched me.

"Don't go. Let's talk this through."

"You don't even believe me. What is there left to talk through?"

Down the hall, Lillian came limping toward us. Her white dress was rumpled and there were water stains on the cuffs.

I was about to speak when her legs gave out and she sank to the floor.

Kane rushed over to catch her on instinct, but he still looked back at me.

"Erin, wait for me."

The panic in his eyes and his plea for me to stay were both real.

Lillian shook her head, eyes red. "Let it go. Maybe Erin just didn't judge her own strength. At the size she is now, even a light bump is more than I can take."

Kane frowned and cut her off. "Leave her body out of it."

But the next thing he said was to me. "You still owe Lillian an explanation for pushing her."

I asked quietly, "So if she says it was me, you believe her?"

Kane said nothing.

He had no proof, yet he still chose Lillian's side.

Seven years of living together couldn't outweigh one of her tears.

I hadn't meant to fight anymore, but the words from the lounge, the plan in the trophy room, and the choice he was making right then all settled like a weight in my chest.

"Kane, you canceled my gym membership on purpose. You had a nutritionist write me a weight-gain plan. Every day, you coaxed me into eating those high-calorie foods. Why?"

Kane's face changed all at once.

Lillian looked up at him too.

"I admit it." Kane's voice went tight. "At first, I was afraid you'd leave the way Lillian did, so I wanted you to depend on nobody but me."

My nails dug into my palm. "So you fed me until I got fat, and then you found me disgusting?"

Panic flashed in his eyes. "I didn't mean what I said in the lounge."

"I've cooked for you for seven years. I remember every time you've ever been sick. No matter how far away a road game took me, I always came home. Erin, how could I not care about you?"

"But you care about Lillian more."

The hallway went dead quiet. Kane opened his mouth and couldn't argue.

Maybe it was true that he loved me.

But the control, the lies, and all the times he cast me aside were just as real. They were part of his love too.

It turned out that when your heart finally died, it really did go quiet.

"All right." I nodded. "You don't have to take care of me anymore."

The color left Kane's face. He came after me without thinking, but he didn't dare block my way again.

"Where are you going? Erin, don't go."

I didn't answer. I went back for my coat, paid the bill, and left alone.

Back at the apartment I had lived in for seven years, I found a big cardboard box and spent the whole night clearing out every trace of us.

Matching mugs, his old jersey, tickets from every game, the lucky bracelet he kissed before every trip, and a whole box of photos of the two of us.

Every time I picked something up, I remembered how he had loved me.

It was because he had loved me that the lies and the damage were even harder to forgive.

Last, I took out the ring I had bought to propose with.

Underneath it was a photo of us, and on the back was something Kane had written seven years ago.

"Erin, no matter how far I go, I always come back to you."

I stared at it for a long time, then put the photo and the ring in the box together.

These had been the only proof I had that we loved each other back when I felt most insecure.

Now there was no reason to keep any of them.

  • He Made Me His Plus-Size Stand-In, I Married Someone Else   Chapter 11 Three months into our marriage, my weight had not budged for six full weeks.

I shoved my dinner away in frustration. Theo slid the bathroom scale aside and set the box containing the finished Aurora necklace in its place. "One less number to look at won't stop you from making jewelry.""You're not going to tell me to eat?""You're not a pet I'm raising." He pushed the fork back into my hand. "If you faint from hunger, I'll just laugh at you."Ten months later, I had gone from two hundred pounds to a hundred and twenty, and all my abnormal health markers had returned to normal.I hadn't turned back into the Erin of twenty-one. I had only learned again what I liked, and when to say no.Aurora became the family jewelry brand's best seller that year, and it won me the North American Emerging Jewelry Designer Award.A year later, the New York Storm asked me to design a commemorative pin for their charity fund.On the day of the launch, I walked back into that old rink in a silver gown of my own design, and the people who had once laughed at me could barely recognize

I didn't look back. Theo acted like nothing had happened at all, took my hand, and headed for the car. "Let's go shopping.""Now?""What else?" He glanced at me. "Stay here and sort out the garbage?"Ethan came right after us. "I'm in a bad mood too. Take me with you."Theo shut the car door and nearly caught Ethan's nose in it.On the drive, I almost explained those seven years several times.Theo tapped the steering wheel. "You don't have to report the past to me. I'm not here to run a background check.""You really don't mind?""I mind."My chest tightened. He turned his face toward me, his voice lazy. "I mind that you said I'm a better man only once. Say it two more times."I couldn't hold back a laugh. On the day of the wedding, my dress had to be taken in another inch at the last minute. In that one month I had lost forty pounds, and I never again let any fabric hide me.Theo stood at the end of the flower-lined aisle, his gaze fixed on me."What are you looking at?""What I'll b

"No."Kane let the flowers fall. Then whatever had been holding him upright seemed to break, and he sank to his knees."Erin, I admit that at first I used you as Lillian's stand-in, but that changed. You're the one who waited for me to come home for seven years. You're the one who patched me up. You're the one I wanted to see most after every road game.""Those two days I couldn't reach you, I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep. I searched all of New York. I was going out of my mind."He set the bracelet down at my feet, his voice breaking."After all those nights that belonged only to us, can you really throw them away as if they meant nothing?"I looked down at him. His sincerity had come too late; now it felt more absurd than his lies."Kane, when you look at me, is it really only me you're seeing?"While clearing out my closet before I left, I realized that the red dress, the jewelry, and even my hairstyles were almost all modeled on Lillian's taste. There was never any natural resembl

  • He Made Me His Plus-Size Stand-In, I Married Someone Else   Chapter 8 Kane was silent for a long time before he said quietly, "Lillian and I are in the past. I just want to talk to Erin."

Ethan slammed on the brakes."Kane, you hid a seven-year relationship with my sister from me. You used her as a stand-in, and you still had the nerve to tell her to apologize to Lillian?""It isn't what you think—""Then what is it? She stayed in New York for seven years because of you. Did you ever once make the relationship public? Did you ever stand in front of the whole team and call her your girlfriend?"Kane's breath caught. Ethan cut the call and threw the phone into the console tray.He turned and stared at me. "What exactly happened between you two?"I knew I couldn't hide it anymore, so I told him all of it: the seven secret years, Lillian, and the weight-gain plan.By the end, Ethan's eyes were red.He slammed a fist into the steering wheel, and after a long moment he reached over and pulled me in. "This is on me. I should have told you who Lillian was, and I should have come to see you a long time ago.""It isn't on you," I said quietly. "I'm the one who read his silence as

  • He Made Me His Plus-Size Stand-In, I Married Someone Else   Chapter 7 I had just opened the door when Ethan came charging in.

He looked at Theo's soaked clothes, then at the towel in my hand, and his expression darkened instantly."Theo, what did you do to my sister?"Theo lay back against the couch without bothering to lift his eyelids. "If you'd shown up two hours later, you might have had something worth getting angry about."Ethan's fist clenched."He didn't do anything." I got between them fast. "I'm the one who called the doctor."The family doctor showed Ethan the exam results proving that Theo had been drugged. Only then did Ethan grudgingly lower his fist.Theo buttoned his shirt. He was still unsteady when he stood, but he apologized formally to my parents first, then had his assistant turn the hotel's security footage and the drug sample over to the police. Before he left, he stopped in front of me."I owe you one for tonight.""How do we settle that?""Come collect when you've decided." He glanced at Ethan. "As long as your brother doesn't set the price for you."On the way home, Ethan finally tol

  • He Made Me His Plus-Size Stand-In, I Married Someone Else   Chapter 6 Kane stepped back outside and checked the number on the door again.

When he went back in, the place was the same stark black and white it had been seven years earlier. He ran into the bedroom and yanked the closet open, then turned and tore through the bathroom, the storage room, and my workbench. Not one thing of mine was left.He called me, and a recorded voice told him again and again that the phone was off. Then he opened Instagram. Our chat was still there, but tapping my name led to a blank profile marked "User not found."Seven years of life had been cleared away so completely that he half wondered whether he had invented me.In a daze, Kane remembered the Life360 circle we had shared. The map now read "Location Sharing Paused," but the history still ended on the night of the championship party two weeks earlier. That night I had stood outside the team lounge for seventeen minutes, less than seventy feet from him, and then left alone.Kane stared at the date, and his fingers began to shake. The phone slipped out of his hand and the screen shatte
