After we made love, Damon pulled me into his arms and opened WhatsApp. A message from Serena popped up, along with a revealing mirror selfie. "Damon, we had a deal. Once she's slept with you, you're in my bed for the next month." I turned my head, stunned. He kissed my cheek absentmindedly. "Serena and I bet on whether you'd sleep with me today. Looks like I lost. "Let's take some time apart. In a month, I promise you a grand wedding." I looked at him, keeping my face calm despite the cruel joke. On the day I moved out, Damon blocked the villa's front door, frowning. "Layla, it's just a bet between Serena and me. Don't throw a tantrum." I didn't answer. I picked up my suitcase and left without looking back. A month later, he proposed, just as he'd promised. I held up the wedding ring I'd just put on. "Sorry. I don't take back trash."

Chapter 1

I pushed him away, picked my clothes up off the floor, and pulled them on.

I couldn't stop thinking about Serena's sexy photo or how casually Damon had talked about it.

I was shaking so hard that the zipper at my back kept catching.

Damon got out of bed, came over, and zipped it up for me.

He wrapped his arms around me from behind, rested his chin on my head, and asked, "What's wrong?"

My voice came out low and hoarse. "I want to go home."

Damon paused, then gave a short laugh. "Layla, it's late. Stay here and get some rest."

"I don't want to."

Damon ruffled my hair. "Be good. You've stayed here before. I'll drive you back to the manor myself tomorrow."

I pulled out of his arms, picked up the custom pistol from the nightstand, and tucked it into my thigh holster.

Damon leaned in the doorway and lit a cigar. His expression hardened. "Layla, I don't like you acting like this."

I didn't respond.

Damon went on. "If it weren't for me, do you think you could have kept that rundown manor your father left you?"

I turned and saw him leaning against the doorframe, blowing a lazy smoke ring.

I smiled, took out the ring Damon had given me, and set it on the hall cabinet. "Let's break up."

Damon stubbed out his cigar, stepped forward, and caught my wrist. "Do you know what you're saying?

"Without my help, the rival families after your father's territory will kill you."

I twisted my hand free. "Whatever happens, it's what I have to face as the heir."

His face went cold, and he stepped back. "Fine. Have it your way. Walk out that door today, and I won't send anyone to protect you again. If you get kidnapped, don't expect me to rescue you."

I looked at him. "Don't worry. I'm not that fragile."

I grabbed my bag and left without looking back.
