Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Tangle H
The next morning, Lucas said through the mind-link, "Garrett told me you moved out last night.

"Mia is only staying at the main house temporarily. You don't need to resign as patrol captain over something like this."

A few minutes later, he sent another one.

"Ten o'clock this morning. Don't forget to see Rosa. We agreed a long time ago that we'd visit her together after taking over the pack."

Rosa was a retired senior firearms specialist from the Alliance.

She was also the one who had taught me to build weapons.

Three years ago, while hunting Shade rogues, I had saved her life.

She told me I didn't have to throw myself into danger every time. She taught me to make the silver bullet gun. One shot, one kill.

Lucas wanted to learn too, but his wolf didn't have my level of sensory tracking. Once a bullet lost its lock on a target, it became useless and could even hit the shooter.

"You just hold on to that treasure Nora of yours!" Rosa had told him.

Lucas had scratched his head at the time, grinning like a boy.

Rosa had always liked the two of us together.

Because the day I got silver poisoning, Lucas didn't hesitate. He drew the toxin out himself, knowing it could kill him, and he wasn't afraid.

I didn't reply to Lucas's mind-link, but I still went to Rosa's patrol base.

I was leaving Frost Fang. I needed to say goodbye to Rosa.

At ten, I pushed open the door.

The air smelled of gun oil and wood shavings.

Rosa had tea ready, and a narrow wooden box sat on the table beside it.

She glanced behind me. "Where's Lucas?"

"He probably got held up."

By ten-thirty, the door had opened twice. Neither time was it him.

At noon, Lucas finally sent a mind-link.

Thunder crashed through the connection, followed by Mia's crying.

"Nora, are you there?"

"I'm here."

"I'm sorry. Mia's wolf was startled by the thunder. She's extremely agitated and needs me to calm her down. I can't get away."

He sounded rushed. "Explain to Rosa for me. I'll come with you next time."

In the background, Mia was sobbing, "Lucas, I can't control it..."

"I'm here. Don't be scared."

After soothing Mia, he turned back to me. "Nora, she could really hurt herself right now. You've always been the understanding one. Don't make me take care of two people at once."

"Don't bother."

"What?"

"There won't be a next time."

I ended the mind-link.

Rosa didn't ask what happened. She just pushed the wooden box across the table.

Inside was an old carving knife. The handle was worn smooth from years of use, but the blade was still sharp.

"I used this when I was young," she said. "I was planning to give it to you after your wedding."

I ran my fingers over the handle, and my nose suddenly stung.

"Now is just as good."

I closed the box. My tears hit the lid.

"Rosa, I'm done with Lucas."

She simply pulled a tissue and pressed it into my hand. She didn't try to change my mind.

After leaving Rosa's place, I went straight to the airport.

Three days earlier, a security company run by the North Ridge pack had offered me a position to help them develop methods for detecting Shades.

They had already arranged housing and a pack transfer application, just waiting for my response.

Back then, I hadn't been ready to leave.

Now, I booked the earliest flight available.

While waiting at the gate, a video popped up in the Frost Fang pack group chat.

Mia was curled up in a blanket on the sofa in the Alpha's residence. Lucas sat behind her, blow-drying her hair.

The caption read: Hoping the storm passes soon.

Helen was the first to like it and left a comment: "Seeing Lucas treat Mia so well puts my mind at ease."

Garrett replied right after: "With such a loving Alpha and Luna, the pack is only going to thrive!"

I stared at that living room that no longer belonged to me, left the group chat, and blocked Helen and Mia.

Then I severed the mind-link with Lucas completely.

With thousands of miles between us, they would never find me.

A sharp pain tore through my chest.

I swallowed the pain and stopped responding to his bond.

The boarding announcement came on, and I walked through security with my suitcase.

That night, Lucas finally left Mia and went to the patrol office.

He was carrying a box of moonlight honey cakes, my old favorite, and pushed the door open.

"Nora, stop being mad. Look what I brought you..."

The office was empty. Every trace of my scent was gone.

The standard patrol maps still hung on the walls, but all my personal belongings and weapons cases had vanished.

A document sat on the desk.

My resignation from the patrol unit, signed and sealed.

Lucas stood in the doorway.

The cake box slipped from his hands and hit the floor. The precious moonlight honey slowly oozed across it.

Six months later, I received an international peace award for cross-pack rescue operations and protecting civilians in conflict zones. After the ceremony, Theo noticed me shivering in the wind and draped his jacket over my shoulders. In that moment, my nose stung."My mate never once saw me as a woman who could get tired, who could be scared, who needed to be taken care of."Lucas rushed in from the terrace entrance, his eyes red and swollen."That's not true, Nora. I love you." Lucas choked on the words. "It's just that you were so strong. So strong that I stopped seeing how vulnerable you were. I got used to you doing everything for me, and I took for granted that you would never leave."I called my endless demands on you 'trust,' and I put you last over and over again. I'm sorry, Nora."I had finally gotten his admission, but I no longer wanted to go back."Then agree to sever the mate bond."After a long silence, Lucas nodded through his tears. We followed the stone steps behind th

Helen chased after me into the compound and grabbed my hand again."Nora, Mom was wrong."She was trembling with sobs. "I shouldn't have favored Mia. But there are so many Shades out there now. If you don't come with us, something will happen to me and Mia sooner or later..."Please, help your own family."I was fooled by Mia too. She's been fragile since she was little. I was just afraid she wouldn't survive."Even now, she was still making excuses for every time she had played favorites. She had resented me since the day I was born. When my sister was born, an Omega, everyone congratulated them. Beautiful baby. Safe delivery. Then came me, carrying the strong scent of Alpha blood. My father held me with pure joy.Helen decided that from the moment I was born, I owed my sister. For years, she had taken every sacrifice I made for granted.I felt no satisfaction, no vindication. Just exhaustion."Mom, this is the last time I'm calling you that."I pried her fingers away. "You and Mia ne

I walked to the entrance.Helen stood beside a black sedan. Mia was hiding behind her in a heavy coat, with several Frost Fang guards lined up behind them. A crowd had already gathered. The moment Helen saw me, she raised her voice."The daughter I raised is now hiding in someone else's territory, watching her own pack fall into danger!"She abandoned her own mother and sister!"She rushed toward me with her hand raised.I stepped back. The slap skimmed past my cheek and missed."You dare dodge?" Helen pointed at the car parked by the road. "Pack your things. You're coming home with me right now."Tomorrow night is the first full moon since Mia became Luna. We've already found signs of Shade activity three times, and the acting patrol captain can't even tell which way they went."You go back tonight, whip the team into shape, and lead the patrol yourself tomorrow. If the territory falls, the whole pack is in trouble."She said it as if she had every right.Lucas walked up beside her. "

By the time Lucas reached North Ridge, it was already dark. The lights at the North Ridge Security training grounds had just come on.I finished the day's training and walked out of the equipment room with my gun case. Theo was standing at the door, waiting for me.Through the chain-link fence, Lucas watched me pull a fallen young patrol member to his feet, then nudge his mud-caked boots with a grin. The others joined in the laughter. No one kept their distance just because I used to be Frost Fang's patrol captain. He had thought I just left his territory. It wasn't until he saw me living here that he realized I had walked into a world without him.Theo had a bunch of wildflowers in his hand, tied with twine, the stems uneven as if he'd picked them from the roadside."Those kids got every direction right for the first time today." He held the flowers out to me, his ears a little red. "Consider it a thank-you."I had just taken the flowers when an angry shout came from behind me."Get a

Lucas started searching for me.He went to every place I used to go and searched every motel near Frost Fang territory. No one told him where I was.My phone was unreachable, my accounts were inaccessible, and the mate bond stayed silent. One evening in the fourth week, when Garrett walked into the Alpha's residence, empty bottles littered the living room floor.Lucas sat on the sofa, clutching the patrol captain badge I had left behind."Alpha, you can't keep going like this."Lucas didn't look up. "She shut down every way I could reach her.""Maybe she just needs a few days to cool off.""She left the pack. She didn't even take the things I gave her."He raised his bloodshot eyes. "This isn't cooling off."When I was angry before, I would hide from him for a few hours at most.He never actually had to look for me, because he knew I would always come back. This time, I hadn't left him a single trail to follow.Footsteps came from the staircase.Mia came down wearing a black nightgown,

The wind in North Ridge cut colder than in Frost Fang territory.North Ridge Security set me up with temporary quarters just behind the training grounds.Every morning, I took new patrol members out to track residual scents. In the afternoon, I returned to the patrol base, disassembled the silver bullet gun, and recalibrated its firing range.Theo asked me, "How many people do you need for your method?"I gave him the number, and he had them there the same day.He high-fived me. "Done deal!"It felt strange not having to charge into battle for someone else. After wrapping up in the evening, I would sit outside the patrol base cleaning my gun barrel.Wind drifted through the pine trees, the people around me chatting about what to have for dinner. No one rushed me to go back and clean up after someone else.Back in Frost Fang, Lucas was still in my patrol office, refusing to leave. He set the cake on the desk and dialed my number. The call went straight to voicemail. He tried reaching th
