Chapter 1

"Marriage is not a joke, Isabella. You don't get to play with something like this."

Isabella only smoothed the veil on her head, ignoring the warning.

Outside, the sound of cheering rolled through the estate before the cars even came into view. Then the gates opened, and a line of black cars slowly entered the grounds.

Luca stepped out of the first car, adjusting his tie with a grin on his face. His men followed behind him, laughing and calling out as they made their way toward the villa.

He had spent three months planning every detail of this day. He had personally chosen the venue, sat through every tasting, approved every arrangement of flowers down to the last white rose.

The gown alone had taken a seamstress in Paris six weeks to finish. Every part of it had been made for me, from the lace to the smallest stitch.

Despite what was happening, I refused to let a moment of anger destroy what Luca had built.

Isabella's eyes narrowed at my refusal to move. Her lips curled, and her fingers went straight to the bodice of the gown she was still wearing.

"Did you even look at this dress properly, Camilla?"

Before I could answer, she pulled back the inner layer of silk, exposing the hidden lining stitched beneath the lace.

Right over the heart, embroidered in the same pale gold thread as the rest of the gown, was a single word.

"Tesoro."

Treasure.

The nickname Luca had always used for Isabella.

He'd never called me that. Not once.

The gown I had waited three months for carried my sister's name against its heart.

If Isabella had not shown me, I might never have known.

"Luca commissioned it himself. He said he wanted my face close to his heart while he took his vows."

The wedding I had believed was built around me suddenly felt like it had been carrying another woman at its center all along.

The noise outside grew louder. Car doors slammed, and the sound of footsteps on gravel signaled that the groom's party was almost at the villa. .

The groom's party was almost at the door.

Before I could react, Mother stepped in front of me. She pressed a hand to her forehead and let out a tired sigh.

"Give the dress to her now. Do you want to start a war over a piece of cloth, Camilla? Isabella is fragile, while you're the strong one. You can bear this for the family."

She reached for my hand, her voice softening. "Sacrifice your pride today. I'll deal with the consequences after the wedding."

For as long as I could remember, it had always been this way. My stolen inheritance. My ignored achievements. My endless sacrifices. They always prioritized Isabella. Even on my wedding day, they were willing to strip me of my dignity to protect her comfort.

I unclasped the diamond necklace Luca gave me and set it on the vanity.

"Then she can have the audience."

I unhooked the back of my gown and let it fall to my feet.

Mother immediately picked up the white gown, handing it to the maid before thrusting a burgundy bridesmaid dress into my arms.

The careful makeup, the styled hair, the hours I had spent preparing to look like a bride—all of it rendered meaningless in a single moment.

Fine. Let them have their little show. I would stay and see how far their lies would go.

"Camilla."

Luca's voice carried from the hallway, warm and eager, completely unaware that the woman he was calling for was no longer the bride.

Isabella took her place by the doors, the white skirt of the gown flowing behind her.

The doors burst open.

Luca and his capos flooded inside, the deafening cheers and the pop of champagne corks drowning out everything else.

I moved into the cluster of bridesmaids, joining the fringe of the celebration.

One of the older capos, carrying a tray of crystal glasses, didn't even glance my way. He shoved past me, the sharp edge of the tray catching my arm and tearing the thin bridesmaid fabric. Wine splashed across my skirt.

"Out of the way, girl. The Don is making his toast."

The moment the words left his mouth, Luca's hand snapped out, grabbing the capo by the collar.

"Apologize to her. Now."

The room went dead silent. The capo paled, immediately bowing his head toward me.

"My apologies."

Luca pulled me away from the crowd, stepping between me and his men.

"No one touches her. She is off-limits to all of you. Do I make myself clear!?"

Another capo laughed nervously, trying to ease the sudden tension.

"If the bridesmaid gets the Don's personal protection, I guess we don't have to bow to the bride!"

The teasing shifted instantly. The men turned toward the bed where Isabella sat, surrounding her with loud laughter. One of them made a crude joke about the family dowry, while another reached out to snatch a piece of her bridal candy.

"Why aren't you stopping them?"

Luca looked at me, his brow furrowing slightly. His gaze dropped to my hand, where I was unconsciously twisting the silver chain around my neck.

"Stop fidgeting with that chain. You're picking up her anxious habits. Relax."

"They know where the limits are."

The same words he had once said to me when I asked how he could trust his own men. Now, they meant something entirely different.

The man standing beside me no longer felt like the one I knew.

When the jokes grew louder and the men pressed closer to Isabella, Father stepped forward. Mother moved immediately to Isabella's side, both of them positioning themselves between her and the crowd.

The chaos slowly settled, and the ceremony resumed. I retreated into the background among the bridesmaids, watching from the place I had been pushed into.

Luca dropped to one knee in front of Isabella.

He lifted her foot with careful hands and slid the wedding shoes onto her feet, one by one.

Rising, Luca's gaze found mine through the crowd.

He winked at me.

The same gesture he always made when he wanted me to know he was thinking of me, even in a crowded room.

I could not even force my lips to curve.

Passing by my side, he pressed a small key into my palm.

"The crowd will be suffocating later. This opens the penthouse. Tonight, I want you all to myself.”

I left the city that same night and didn't look back.I drove for hours until I reached a small coastal town I'd only ever seen in photos. The kind of place where no one knew my name or cared about my family or asked questions I didn't want to answer.I rented a tiny apartment above a bookstore and started over. For the first time in my life, I woke up without the weight of someone else's expectations pressing down on my chest.I painted because I wanted to, not because I was trying to prove something, and I took long walks by the water without checking my phone every five minutes. It was quiet, and peaceful.Six months later, I opened a small art gallery near the harbor. It wasn't much—just a renovated warehouse with whitewashed walls and secondhand furniture—but it was mine. That's where I met Marco. He came in one afternoon looking for a gift for his sister and ended up staying for two hours, asking about every piece on the wall. He didn't know anything about art, but he listened li

They didn't realize I was gone until three days later.Isabella came home from the hospital on a Wednesday afternoon, and the house felt quieter than usual, but no one seemed to notice why.My mother helped Isabella settle back into her room, and when she came out, she walked down the hallway and stopped in front of my door. She knocked hard."Camilla, get out here. You've been ignoring my calls for three days. Come out and apologize to your sister."She waited, but there was no answer. She knocked again, louder this time."Camilla!"Still nothing. She called for my father, and he came upstairs, saw the closed door, and didn't hesitate. He put his shoulder into it and shoved it open. The room was dark.My mother stepped inside and looked around slowly. The bed was small—barely big enough for one person—and the frame was old and scratched, something they'd pulled out of storage years ago. There was no proper closet, just a narrow metal rack shoved against the wall, and the only window w

Luca didn't say another word. He just turned and walked out, slamming the door behind him."Your mother was right. Isabella knows how to make a man feel wanted. You never did."The words hit me like an arrow straight to the chest. The people closest to you always know exactly where to aim when they want to hurt you. When I arrived back at the estate, the lights were off and no one was home.I checked my phone. The family group chat had exploded with messages. My mother's name appeared over and over. Then my father's. Then my aunts and uncles. All of them blaming me for what happened.I turned off notifications and shoved the phone back in my pocket.I walked upstairs to my room and opened the closet. There wasn't much to pack. Most of my clothes were hand-me-downs from Isabella. When she turned sixteen, our parents bought her an entire new wardrobe from Paris. She got custom dresses, tailored coats and jewelry.A week later, my mother brought Isabella's old wardrobe into my room and to

The hall was in complete chaos. Guests stood in confused clusters, whispering and staring. No one seemed able to explain what had just happened.Luca stood near the altar, his eyes red and wide. He looked between me on the floor and the door where they had just carried Isabella out. His face was pale and confused, but also guilty.Last New Year's Eve, I had asked him a question."If Isabella and I switched places, would you be able to tell?"He had laughed and pulled me closer."Of course I would. You're mine, Camilla. I'd know you anywhere."Because we were twins, everyone assumed Isabella and I were exactly the same. Even our parents had mixed us up when we were children. But I had a small scar on my collarbone. A thin white line from the night of the attack when I was seven. Isabella didn't have it.I thought Luca knew about it. I thought he had noticed. The paramedics arrived quickly. My mother and father rushed Isabella into the back of the ambulance without looking back at me onc

The reception hall doors opened, and guests began filling the long tables. Waiters moved between them carrying trays of champagne and wine. This morning, the moment Isabella agreed to take my place, my father went upstairs and came back down wearing something I had never seen before. He wore a flawless charcoal-gray suit made from the finest Italian wool, cut perfectly to his body.He had bought it last year and never worn it. He said he was saving it for something that mattered.Apparently, this mattered.Moments ago, when I asked my father to walk me down the aisle, he looked at me like I had just asked him to set himself on fire in front of the entire family."Why would I do something like that? You think I want to embarrass myself in front of everyone?" He shook his head. "If you're so desperate to walk down an aisle, you shouldn't have let your sister wear your wedding dress from the start."Now he stood by the entrance in that expensive suit, laughing with guests and shaking hand

The courtyard beyond the villa gates was lined with black SUVs, each one marked with the Moretti family crest. Armed guards in tailored suits stood at every entrance, their eyes scanning the crowd even during celebration. My chest tightened. I reached out and grabbed Luca's wrist before he could step out of the car."What are you doing?"He pulled out his phone and made a quick call. Within seconds, he was already giving instructions."Send Gabriella over. Now."Gabriella was Isabella's personal stylist, the woman who had spent two hours this morning perfecting every detail of her look.Luca ended the call and glanced back at Isabella, who sat quietly in the seat behind us, her hands folded neatly in her lap."Your sister looks terrible. She'll ruin every photograph." He said it so casually, like he was commenting on the weather. "Today is your day, Isabella. Everyone around you should look perfect."What a convenient excuse.Isabella said nothing. She just tilted her head slightly and
