Chapter 4

Penulis: Lara Dimson
The reception hall doors opened, and guests began filling the long tables. Waiters moved between them carrying trays of champagne and wine.

This morning, the moment Isabella agreed to take my place, my father went upstairs and came back down wearing something I had never seen before. He wore a flawless charcoal-gray suit made from the finest Italian wool, cut perfectly to his body.

He had bought it last year and never worn it. He said he was saving it for something that mattered.

Apparently, this mattered.

Moments ago, when I asked my father to walk me down the aisle, he looked at me like I had just asked him to set himself on fire in front of the entire family.

"Why would I do something like that? You think I want to embarrass myself in front of everyone?" He shook his head. "If you're so desperate to walk down an aisle, you shouldn't have let your sister wear your wedding dress from the start."

Now he stood by the entrance in that expensive suit, laughing with guests and shaking hands like he was the one getting married.

My mother sat in the small room off the main hall, gripping Isabella's hands so tightly her knuckles had turned white. Her eyes were wet, her voice shaking.

"Thank God this is only for today. If you were really leaving us, I don't think I could survive it."

Isabella nodded quietly, her face soft and sympathetic.

I sat on the bench in the corner, watching them. My right ear was still ringing from the gunshots earlier. Every time I turned my head, a sharp pulse of pain shot through the side of my skull.

A knock came at the door.

"It's time. The bride is ready."

Isabella stood slowly. She smoothed the front of the dress and turned toward our father.

He smiled at her and held out his arm.

She took it without hesitation.

The double doors opened, and I watched them step into the hall together.

I watched my father walk her down the center aisle while two hundred guests stood and turned to look. I watched him stop in front of Luca, place Isabella's hand in his, and step back with pride written all over his face.

I watched Luca take her hands. I watched them exchange rings under Father Dominic's blessing. I watched him lift the veil and kiss her while everyone clapped and cheered.

I watched them cut the cake together, their fingers wrapped around the same knife.

Inside my chest, there was nothing. No anger. No grief. Not even disappointment anymore.

Just silence.

The ceremony continued then the coordinator stepped forward holding a large bouquet. It was full of white roses, peonies, and baby's breath, wrapped tightly with ivory ribbon.

The emcee's voice echoed across the hall.

"And now, the bride will toss the bouquet to pass on her blessing."

Isabella accepted the flowers and brought them up toward her face, closing her eyes like she wanted to breathe in the scent.

Then everything changed.

Her smile vanished. She grabbed onto Luca's arm, her nails digging into his jacket sleeve.

"Luca—what flowers are in this?"

He looked confused.

"Roses, peonies, baby's breath . You told me those were your favorites. I had them flown in from a florist in Florence because you said you loved that combination."

"I never—"

Before she could finish, her knees buckled. Bright red hives spread rapidly across her neck and collarbone. Her face went pale. Her breathing became shallow and labored, each breath a desperate gasp for air.

My mother screamed and ran toward the stage.

"What's happening?! Somebody help her!"

My father pulled his phone from his pocket, his hands shaking as he dialed.

"Get Dr. Russo to the estate right now. Isabella's collapsing."

I stood up and walked quickly onto the stage. I kicked the bouquet across the floor, away from where Isabella had fallen.

"She's allergic to baby's breath flowers. Everyone needs to move back and give her space."

I had almost forgotten. With everything that had happened today, it had slipped my mind until now.

My mother turned toward me. Her face was red and her eyes wild. She crossed the stage in three steps and slapped me so hard my head snapped to the side.

My right ear—the one still damaged from earlier—went completely silent. The world turned muffled and distant, like I had been sealed inside a glass box.

"You evil, selfish girl! You did this on purpose! You're trying to kill your own sister!"

Before I could say anything, my father grabbed my shoulder and shoved me backward.

I fell hard onto my knees.

"If anything happens to her, I will hold you responsible. I don't care what you say. If she dies, you'll answer for it."

I opened my mouth. I wanted to tell him I had nothing to do with this. That I was only trying to help.

But the words rose up in my throat and died there.

Because it didn't matter.

They would never believe me.

Below the stage, the whispers started.

"Wait—wasn't the older sister supposed to be the bride? When did they switch?"

"Does the groom even know what's going on?"

My parents froze. Slowly, they both turned away from me.

Luca stood near the altar, his face completely drained of color. His eyes moved between me on the floor and Isabella gasping for breath.

His mouth opened, but no sound came out at first.

Then his voice came, quiet and shaking.

"Which one of you is—"

He stopped and swallowed hard.

"What the hell is going on?"

I left the city that same night and didn't look back.I drove for hours until I reached a small coastal town I'd only ever seen in photos. The kind of place where no one knew my name or cared about my family or asked questions I didn't want to answer.I rented a tiny apartment above a bookstore and started over. For the first time in my life, I woke up without the weight of someone else's expectations pressing down on my chest.I painted because I wanted to, not because I was trying to prove something, and I took long walks by the water without checking my phone every five minutes. It was quiet, and peaceful.Six months later, I opened a small art gallery near the harbor. It wasn't much—just a renovated warehouse with whitewashed walls and secondhand furniture—but it was mine. That's where I met Marco. He came in one afternoon looking for a gift for his sister and ended up staying for two hours, asking about every piece on the wall. He didn't know anything about art, but he listened li

They didn't realize I was gone until three days later.Isabella came home from the hospital on a Wednesday afternoon, and the house felt quieter than usual, but no one seemed to notice why.My mother helped Isabella settle back into her room, and when she came out, she walked down the hallway and stopped in front of my door. She knocked hard."Camilla, get out here. You've been ignoring my calls for three days. Come out and apologize to your sister."She waited, but there was no answer. She knocked again, louder this time."Camilla!"Still nothing. She called for my father, and he came upstairs, saw the closed door, and didn't hesitate. He put his shoulder into it and shoved it open. The room was dark.My mother stepped inside and looked around slowly. The bed was small—barely big enough for one person—and the frame was old and scratched, something they'd pulled out of storage years ago. There was no proper closet, just a narrow metal rack shoved against the wall, and the only window w

Luca didn't say another word. He just turned and walked out, slamming the door behind him."Your mother was right. Isabella knows how to make a man feel wanted. You never did."The words hit me like an arrow straight to the chest. The people closest to you always know exactly where to aim when they want to hurt you. When I arrived back at the estate, the lights were off and no one was home.I checked my phone. The family group chat had exploded with messages. My mother's name appeared over and over. Then my father's. Then my aunts and uncles. All of them blaming me for what happened.I turned off notifications and shoved the phone back in my pocket.I walked upstairs to my room and opened the closet. There wasn't much to pack. Most of my clothes were hand-me-downs from Isabella. When she turned sixteen, our parents bought her an entire new wardrobe from Paris. She got custom dresses, tailored coats and jewelry.A week later, my mother brought Isabella's old wardrobe into my room and to

The hall was in complete chaos. Guests stood in confused clusters, whispering and staring. No one seemed able to explain what had just happened.Luca stood near the altar, his eyes red and wide. He looked between me on the floor and the door where they had just carried Isabella out. His face was pale and confused, but also guilty.Last New Year's Eve, I had asked him a question."If Isabella and I switched places, would you be able to tell?"He had laughed and pulled me closer."Of course I would. You're mine, Camilla. I'd know you anywhere."Because we were twins, everyone assumed Isabella and I were exactly the same. Even our parents had mixed us up when we were children. But I had a small scar on my collarbone. A thin white line from the night of the attack when I was seven. Isabella didn't have it.I thought Luca knew about it. I thought he had noticed. The paramedics arrived quickly. My mother and father rushed Isabella into the back of the ambulance without looking back at me onc

The courtyard beyond the villa gates was lined with black SUVs, each one marked with the Moretti family crest. Armed guards in tailored suits stood at every entrance, their eyes scanning the crowd even during celebration. My chest tightened. I reached out and grabbed Luca's wrist before he could step out of the car."What are you doing?"He pulled out his phone and made a quick call. Within seconds, he was already giving instructions."Send Gabriella over. Now."Gabriella was Isabella's personal stylist, the woman who had spent two hours this morning perfecting every detail of her look.Luca ended the call and glanced back at Isabella, who sat quietly in the seat behind us, her hands folded neatly in her lap."Your sister looks terrible. She'll ruin every photograph." He said it so casually, like he was commenting on the weather. "Today is your day, Isabella. Everyone around you should look perfect."What a convenient excuse.Isabella said nothing. She just tilted her head slightly and
