Chapter 2

Author: Whimsical Clementine
The week had barely begun before Theodore ruined it.

The handover that was supposed to land on my desk never came. Even the interns who used to greet me with polite nods now made a point of detouring around me in the hallway.

Whispers clung to me like a shadow I could not shake.

"Disgusting. Her sister just passed, and she's already this eager."

"Good performance means nothing. With that attitude, she'll be gone sooner or later."

When the day finally came to an end, I packed up and stood to leave, only to collide head-on with Theodore's assistant, Joyce Cooper.

She was holding a stack of documents. The moment she saw me, she rolled her eyes without even trying to hide it. "Ms. Hartwell, Mr. Wesley wants you in his office. He says it's urgent."

I looked at her, feeling a sense of helplessness rise within me.

When Joyce first joined the company, she had been sidelined by senior staff for not understanding the work. I was the one who taught her how to build reports and handle clients. We had even eaten together a few times outside of work.

But ever since Theodore began twisting his words and spreading rumors about me, her attitude toward me had changed entirely.

I knew she was pressured into exhaustion by Theodore and had started believing the rumors, assuming I was no better than he was.

"Got it," I replied calmly.

I pulled out a sticky note, quickly wrote my home address on it, and handed it over. "If you can trust me one more time, come and meet me at my place."

She shot me a puzzled look. Her lips parted slightly as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she took the sticky note and said nothing.

I didn't say anything else and turned to leave.

When I pushed open Theodore's office door, he was lounging in his chair, smoking.

As I stepped in, he tapped the document on his desk. "Meg, this is a new client's pre-launch promotion plan. I want it revised tonight. You can stay here and work on it. If anything comes up, we'll discuss it immediately."

There it was again.

I walked straight over, grabbed the document, and threw it at his face. The papers scattered across the floor.

Theodore's expression darkened instantly. He shot up from his chair and shouted, "Megan Hartwell! Have you lost your mind?"

I let out a cold laugh. "Theodore, cut the act. You want me to revise it in your office so people will misunderstand me even more. That way, it's easier for you to control me, isn't it?"

He spat on the floor and threatened darkly, "Megan, don't push it. You know exactly what your reputation is like in this company.

"If I choose to make things hard for you, I can make sure you won't last in this industry. As for the overseas placement, one word from me and you'll never get that opportunity."

I looked at him, at his pathetic attempt to sound powerful, and found it almost laughable.

He probably still didn't know that I had been personally recruited by the president three years ago. She had promised to train me properly, and once the time was right, I would join her in expanding overseas and return as her deputy.

Over these three years, I had worked my way up in branch offices. My performance kept improving over time, and I had long since proven myself to her.

This so-called overseas assignment had never been anything more than something I chose not to make a big deal about. I never expected it would end up giving someone like him leverage.

"Theodore, you really think too highly of yourself. I used to show you respect because of my sister. Now, you're nothing but trash."

With that, I turned and walked out, leaving him behind to vent his rage and slam things around.

When I got to the underground parking lot, I stopped in my tracks as a sudden thought struck me.

Was Beatrice's car accident really just an accident?

Theodore had always played the role of a decent husband. And because Beatrice had died while driving to the airport to pick me up, guilt had blinded me to everything else.

But now that I thought about it carefully, Beatrice had always been a careful driver. Why would she have taken a road that was under maintenance, especially in the middle of a heavy rainstorm?

And what about Theodore? Had he really been working late at the office that night?

I clenched my fists without realizing it.

Whether her death was an accident or something else entirely, I was going to unearth the truth.

After obtaining Claire's recorded testimony, I immediately contacted a private investigator and instructed him to find concrete evidence that Theodore had staged the car accident. A few days later, the investigator delivered surveillance footage from a dashcam at the scene of the incident. The video clearly recorded the entire process, showing Theodore pushing Beatrice into the road before carefully staging the scene afterward. The next day, Theodore walked into the board meeting with his crew and fired the first shot.He presented his so-called evidence and launched a public accusation, claiming that Ms. Taylor and I had colluded to embezzle company funds. He then went on a tirade, insisting that I had been involved in Beatrice's accident out of pure jealousy. As murmurs and whispers spread through the room, I rose to my feet and displayed the evidence I had for everyone to see. When the footage of Theodore pushing Beatrice into the road appeared on the screen, the entire room fe

Theodore was suspended and placed under internal investigation. As agreed, he also issued a public apology and returned the kickbacks he had embezzled, along with the performance revenue he had stolen from me.For a brief moment, I was treated like a hero within the company. The same people who had once ostracized and slandered me now completely changed their attitude. Whenever they saw me, they offered strained smiles and exaggerated politeness.Still, I couldn't quite put my mind at ease. Theodore would never let this end so easily, and Casper would definitely find a way to retaliate.More importantly, the suspicious details surrounding Beatrice's car accident continued to accumulate.Theodore had claimed he was working late on the night of the accident, but his spending records told a different story. He hadn't been anywhere near the office.I needed answers, and I needed them fast.A few days later, the private investigator I hired brought me a crucial lead. On the day of Bea

In no time at all, Theodore's godfather arrived at the company with a large entourage.I looked up and recognized him immediately. It was Casper Thompson, a newly partnered client of our company's headquarters and a well-known local entrepreneur with extensive business holdings. His expression was grim. The moment he stepped inside, he headed straight for Ms. Taylor."Ms. Taylor, I heard someone in this company has been falsely accusing my godson and even trying to fire him. I want to know exactly what he did to deserve this kind of treatment."Ms. Taylor got to her feet. She was calm, but the authority in her tone was impossible to ignore. "Mr. Thompson, I suggest we all remain calm. This is not a case of defamation. We possess verifiable evidence, and we are proceeding strictly according to company protocol.""Evidence? What evidence?"Casper let out a cold snort. He opened his briefcase and slammed several documents onto the table."This is the evidence. Every one of these

The moment Theodore saw me, disbelief flashed across his face. He pointed at me, but couldn't get a word out.I didn't give him time to recover. Instead, I nodded toward the technical staff below the stage. The content on the giant screen switched once again. This time, it displayed private chat logs between Theodore and several male coworkers who were close to him."That new intern is cute, but she's way too full of herself. I'd really like to see if I can make her give in.""Ms. Winslow from Finance is way too old to be dressing so provocatively. She must be desperate for male attention.""Megan is just a figurehead. Without me, would she even have her current position? Once I get tired of her, I'll kick her out."The disgusting remarks instantly darkened the expressions of the female employees, while the male employees awkwardly lowered their heads in silence."Theodore! You've gone too far!" a female coworker snapped furiously."Exactly! Do you really think you own this pla

Theodore froze. He turned to Joyce and shot her a sharp glare. "What did you say? How could Ms. Taylor arrive early?""I don't know!" Joyce cried. "Reception just called. Ms. Taylor is already downstairs. She told you to go down and meet her immediately!"Theodore shot me a vicious look and roughly patted my face. "Lucky you!"He clearly couldn't afford to be late for Ms. Taylor. Before he left, he pointed at Joyce and barked, "Keep an eye on her! She's not leaving this room, and she's absolutely not to see Ms. Taylor. If anything happens, you'll answer for it!"With that, he stormed out in a hurry. That left only Joyce and me in the room.I leaned against the wall, feeling extremely lightheaded.Joyce quickly wiped her face and hurried over to me, pulling a USB drive from her pocket and handing it over. Her hands were trembling, but her voice was steady. "Megan, I've always believed in you."I took the USB drive, and a warm feeling washed over me. "Thank you.""I should be th

The moment I arrived at the office the next day, I heard Theodore's voice drifting out of the break room.He was surrounded by a few coworkers, putting on his usual pitiful act as he sighed dramatically. "You have no idea. Meg probably thinks I'm too old for her now. Ever since I forgot her favorite designer brand last time, she's been giving me the cold shoulder. "Her sister entrusted me to take care of her before she passed away, but that doesn't mean I can buy her everything she wants. Still, what can I do? I'm her brother-in-law."It was the same old routine he always used, and I had long since grown numb to it.With my mug in hand, I stopped at the doorway and gave him a cold look before silently turning to leave.Theodore clearly hadn't expected me to stay so calm. After I walked away, he leaned over and whispered something to the others, instantly making the group burst into snickers.Over the next two days, Theodore kept finding ways to make things difficult for me.Som
