Chapter 2

Author: Noorie
While I turned to leave, Stacy shot a side glance at me. Her smug appearance swiftly shifted to feign guilt and concern.

“I’m sorry, Evelyn. I got carried away with the music and dragged Mr. Watson with me too.”

“If you don't like it, I’ll just get down. Please don't leave because of me.” She added, yet her hands remained wrapped passionately around Enzo’s shoulder.

The moment those words escaped through her lips, Enzo pulled her closer. Making his grab tightening his grip on her waist, he added, “She doesn't know the ‘B’ of Bachata, and I’m so freaking bored of her Salsa.”

He shot a short glance over me, his eyes turning cold. “If she can't even tolerate watching me dance with someone, she can leave.”

“Leave the car and the security here. Go by yourself.” He commanded, “Let's see how daring you are!”

He knew my trauma too well.

My mother was a drug-addicted stripper. But when her customers were getting bored of her, she began forcing me to dance in the bar. The drunkards would try to touch me inappropriately while my mother laughed, counting the money they threw at me, until one night Enzo showed up. He rescued me from my abusive mother but couldn't erase my fear of drunkards and men’s stares.

I was afraid of walking alone at night. So, he never let me. He always stayed by my side, and if there was an emergency, his A-class security would follow me to make me feel comfortable.

Yet, knowing my childhood trauma, he used my vulnerability to make me stay.

But I did not stay. Neither did I beg for his security. I simply turned back and walked out.

However, on my way back home, I felt someone following me. After I reached home, I turned back only to find a dog following me because I had fed him a cookie before. But the trauma had already gotten to me. I was burning with a high fever.

I called Enzo several times. He didn't pick up. Instead, my phone vibrated with a notification. It was Stacy’s social media post.

She had posted a picture kissing Enzo on the dance floor with a caption. [Got carried away and kissed my boss. But he didn't refuse. Instead, he deepened it. Guess he likes it so much.]

I remembered the time I tried to hold his hand in public. He had shoved me off so ruthlessly I almost fell. His response: ‘I don't like public display.’

Yet, he let an assistant kiss him on the very lips I had kissed several times in our bed.

Pulling my thoughts back, I dug out a phone number buried at the very bottom of my contacts.

“You said you’d always keep a spot open for me. Does that still stand?”

Receiving an excited and quick reply, I took some fever medicine and drifted into a groggy sleep.

The next day, I was woken up by a phone call.

“Evelyn Richard, have you lost all your manners? We agreed on a family dinner—you're making our whole family wait for just you?”

My head felt like it was splitting open from the fever. “I have a high fever...”

“Stop making up excuses. Get over here right now; don't make everyone wait on you.”

Dragging my frail body, I made a trip to the Watson estate, only to find Stacy sitting right next to Enzo.

The family wore mixed expressions, and Old Lady Watson in particular glared at me cold-heartedly.

No matter how many times I had explained in the past that I wasn't marrying Enzo for his money, she still insisted I was a freeloading leech.

“Sleeping in until noon—and you still claim you aren't here to live off our money? Who would believe that?”

No one noticed the cold sweat dripping down my face, nor did anyone see my legs trembling from weakness...

And Enzo didn't even stand up to welcome me like he used to.

Suffocated by the rising chorus of accusations, I declared, “Auntie, I'm not marrying Enzo.”

Enzo’s mother’s face froze. Enzo left his seat and walked up to me, his eyes red with fury. “Are you still not done with last night?”

“It was a mistake. Stop throwing tantrums over childish things.”

“My whole family is waiting for a legal heir. Do you think it's time to joke about our wedding that's three days apart?” He barked.

I was the one being mocked, and yet I was the one being blamed. He scolded me endlessly without noticing my discomfort in the slightest.

Just as I was about to snap, Stacy looked at me with a pitiful expression.

“Evelyn, that bracelet on your wrist… did Enzo give it to you last night? It's Nora’s last piece, a designer I adore so much. My father wanted to give me one on my eighteenth birthday, but he just couldn't afford it.”

I instinctively clenched my fist, a sharp prickle catching in my throat. It was something Enzo had given me in our first year of relationship. I always wore it. How could she notice it only now?

But the moment those words escaped her lips, Enzo flashed a master card in my hands and said, “Take as much money as you want and give that bracelet to her.”

“This piece is close to her heart. As for you… you wouldn't even have known the designer’s name.” He added, a smirk suppressed on his lips.

So, it wasn't just his family who looked down on me. He looked down on my poor background, yet for some reason kept me close; perhaps my appearance made him feel like a saviour, a godfather, a pride despite his hearing incapabilities.

“Sure…” I said calmly before unfastening the bracelet from my wrist as I tossed it into Stacy's hands.

I then turned back to look at him. My decisive move left him looking at me in shock as I tossed his master card back into his hands and said, “No need to pay me. It was a worthless piece I was going to dump anyway.”

“Evelyn, please," He begged, his composure flaking away in front of the crowd. "I sent your mother away. She is receiving the worst punishment ever. And Stacy… she is fired. Never coming back. I fixed it, Evelyn. I fixed everything."I looked at him—really looked at him—and felt a strange, profound sense of emptiness."You didn't fix anything, Enzo," I said softly. "You just finally paid attention to the house while it was already burning down.""I was wrong!" Tears finally spilled over his eyes. "Stacy lied to me, she manipulated the situation—""She didn't force you to ignore my calls," I interrupted, keeping my voice measured so as not to cause a scene. "He didn't force you to leave me alone in a high fever while you rushed to her side, nor did she force you to bring the woman who ruined my childhood into our lives. You chose not to listen. You chose to doubt me until the truth hit you in the face."He shook his head frantically, moving closer. "I was deaf to it, Evelyn. I was blind

Evelyn’s POVThe neon glare of the venue lights stung my eyes, but I didn’t dare blink. If I blinked, the overwhelming noise of the crowd—the screaming fans, the flashing camera bulbs, the rhythmic chanting of my stage name—might bleed through the fragile armor I had spent the last month piecing back together."Crystal! Please sign my poster!""Crystal, look over here!"I smiled, a sharp, practiced curve of my lips, and pressed the black marker to a glossy print of my album cover. Beneath the silver hair dye, the dark makeup, and the heavy leather jacket, Evelyn didn't exist anymore. Evelyn was the broken girl who had walked into the freezing rain with nothing in her pockets and a hole in her chest. Crystal was the woman who had traded her silence for a guitar and carved her name into the city's airwaves. When I ran that night, I didn't take the trains or the highways. I took a battered bus to a forgotten district, sold the last necklace I had kept, and paid cash for a cheap acoustic

The drive back to the villa was a blur of red tail lights and rain. When Enzo stepped into the grand foyer, the house felt entirely different. It wasn't just quiet; it was hollow. The vast, sprawling estate that had once felt like a symbol of his power now felt like a mausoleum. He walked up the stairs, his heavy footsteps echoing off the marble. He pushed open the bedroom door again, hoping—desperately, foolishly—that he had missed something earlier. He hadn't.The closet was still bare. The nightstand still held the thin gold band and the keys.Enzo walked over to the bed and sat on the edge, sinking his face into his hands. His chest heaved as the magnitude of his failure crashed over him.He had forced her to sit across from the woman who had abused her. He had called her dramatic. He had dismissed her pain as a "tantrum." He had listened to Stacy’s sweet poison and forced Evelyn to swallow it, believing he was acting like a rational, benevolent man.He hadn't been a protector. He

The heavy mahogany door creaked as Enzo pushed it open. The laughter inside cut off instantly. Stacy, draped in a delicate pastel gown, froze with a half-empty champagne glass in her hand. Beside her, Evelyn’s mother, Martha, paled, the crisp envelope of cash she had been counting falling open to reveal thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills."Enzo!" Stacy gasped. She forced a soft, relieved smile, taking a quick step toward him. "You’re back! Did you find her? Is she coming?"Enzo didn't move. He stood in the doorway. His face was entirely devoid of expression, but his eyes were so cold they seemed to drain the warmth from the room."Enzo?" Stacy’s smile faltered, her eyes flicking nervously down to his clenched fists. "What’s wrong? You look—""How much?" Enzo’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it cut through the room like a blade.Martha swallowed hard, hastily shoving the cash behind her back. "Enzo, dear, we were just—""How much did you pay her, Stacy?" Enzo stepped into the room, c

Third-person POVEnzo stared at his phone screen, the words ‘Wedding reservation canceled by the bride at midnight’ burning into his eyes. The faint murmur of the high-society crowd in the church suddenly sounded like a rushing torrent of water in his ears."She’s throwing a tantrum," his mother, Emily, declared as she glided over, her velvet dress rustling softly. She sneered at the frantic wedding coordinator. "Look at the scene she’s creating. Ungrateful girl. After everything our family did for her, taking her in when she had nothing, she pulled a childish stunt like this on your big day? She’s just trying to humiliate us, Enzo. Forget her. Let her sulk."Enzo straightened his jacket, pushing down the sudden, unfamiliar twist of anxiety in his chest. His mother was right. Evelyn was dramatic. She had nowhere else to go, no family left except the mother she hated, and no money of her own. She was probably sitting in her bedroom right now, clutching her knees, waiting for him to come

  • He Never Listened to Me. Now He Can't!   Chapter 4

The next day, as I woke up, I walked down the stairs only to find our house filled with Enzo’s family giggling and laughing, sitting around Stacy. The moment Enzo saw me, he walked up to me. His voice was ice cold as he spat, “This is the time to wake up, Evelyn?” “I have told you that we would be checking our wedding outfits, yet you are late for your own event.” “Look at Stacy. She came here early, served my family like her own. Something that you should have been doing right now.” I looked at Stacy. She was in her braided woman costume. Next to her hung my own wedding gown that looked so plain and cheap compared to the gown she had been wearing. I watched Enzo's family appreciate Stacy for a mere cup of coffee she only helped our cook serve. Back when any small or big event happened in the Watson family, despite being the Don’s woman, I would walk into the kitchen, do the dishes, prepare their favourite meals, and serve them myself, yet they never appreciated me.“Your family
