Chapter 3

Author: Liz
Muddy water and blood dripped from my hands.

Dragging my scraped leg, I limped into the underpass on the corner.

Cold wind cut through my wet shirt. I was about to look for a pay phone to call the butler when I heard an engine roar behind me.

High beams blazed across my back. I turned and squinted into the light.

A black pickup with no license plates sped straight toward me.

I threw myself toward a nearby trash can, and the pickup grazed my thigh as it passed.

The tires screeched, and the truck stopped across the underpass exit, trapping me.

The driver's door opened. A big bald man climbed out with a metal baseball bat.

I knew him. Luke was one of Leo's friends from the black market.

Luke rested the bat on his shoulder and gave me a leering grin.

"Well, well, if it isn't Elena. How'd you end up looking like a stray dog?"

I pressed my back to the wall, watching the bat in his hand.

"Who sent you?"

Luke gave a cold laugh and swung the bat twice.

"Leo's real generous. He paid me $10,000 to break one of your legs and make sure you leave Texas tonight for good.

"He said a broke woman like you knows too much. You'll ruin his plans to marry the rich girl if you stay here."

Before he'd even finished, Luke stepped forward and swung the bat into my left shin.

Pain shot through me. I grunted and dropped to my knees in the standing water.

I broke out in a cold sweat, but I gritted my teeth and refused to beg.

Luke grabbed my hair and forced my head up.

The reek of alcohol and cigarettes hit me. His gaze crawled over my soaked clothes.

"Damn, you're pretty. No wonder Leo slept with you for three years without paying a cent."

Luke licked his lips and reached for my collar.

"Be good and spend the night with me, sweetheart. Maybe I'll leave your other leg alone. What do you say?"

I felt sick.

As Luke leaned down to kiss me, my right hand found half a brick in the muddy water. I smashed it into his forehead.

The brick hit with a dull thud. Blood ran down past his eye.

Luke screamed, dropped the bat, and staggered back, clutching his face. "Bitch! You hit me! You crazy bitch!"

I snatched the bat from the ground, got to my feet, and raised it.

Luke started toward me again, then saw the murderous look in my eyes and lost his nerve.

He backed away. "Just you wait! This isn't over!"

Cursing, Luke climbed into his pickup, one hand pressed to his head, and drove off.

When the headlights disappeared, I slid down the wall. My hands shook as I tore a strip from my shirt and tied it around my bleeding leg.

Then I pulled the waterproof backup satellite phone from my inner pocket and hit speed dial.

Margaret, my father's chief of staff, answered at once.

"Ms. Rockwell, what happened?"

Breathing hard, I stared at the blood swirling in the filthy water around me. Something inside me went cold.

"Send a car to the Third Street underpass. Have a surgeon ready.

"And tell the attorney general's office to pull every false entry Leo has made through his shell companies in the past three years."

Two months later, at Rockwell Ranch. The ranch stretched to the horizon. Green grass rippled in the wind, and the air smelled of grass and wildflowers. It was the first celebration since the Rockwell family had regained control of the land.In white riding clothes and black boots, I swung onto a black thoroughbred. The fracture in my shin had healed. I sat tall in the saddle and gathered the reins. My father stood outside the fence in a denim jacket, smiling and applauding. The ranch hands and partners raised their glasses. Cheers and whistles carried across the open sky.Three years of darkness had lifted. I was back where I belonged.Meanwhile, 500 miles away, at a maximum-security federal prison in Texas.Leo knelt on the concrete floor of a dark, damp cell.He hadn't had surgery on his right arm soon enough. It hung twisted, withered, and useless against his chest.Several heavily tattooed inmates stood behind him, kicking him in the lower back."Listen up, con man. You're new here

Travis County Jail. The high-security visitation room. The air smelled of disinfectant and mold.Beyond the thick bulletproof glass, Leo sat in a prison uniform, his head shaved. His broken right arm hung against his chest, wrapped in only a few layers of bandage. The visiting room door opened. When Leo saw me sitting across from him, a feverish light flared in his eyes.He seized the phone with his left hand and pressed close to the glass, spitting as he spoke."Elena! You finally came to see me! I knew you still had feelings for me!"He growled through the glass, his words tumbling over one another."Tell the judge you forgive me. Ask the prosecutor to drop the charges. I'll do anything you want when I get out!"I'll do whatever you say. I'll be the most obedient dog at your feet, okay? Please, just get me out of here!"I sat in a swivel chair, dressed in a black skirt suit, and calmly watched him come apart.I left the receiver where it was and tapped the glass.Michael, standing be

Early the next morning, under an Austin overpass. The place reeked.Leo woke shivering, his broken arm burning with pain. The night before, patrol officers had chased him down the hill like a vagrant. He'd ended up crawling under the overpass to sleep. He pushed himself up with his good hand and looked toward the window of an abandoned newsstand.A huge photo filled the front page of the morning paper. It showed Leo groveling outside the governor's estate, sobbing in the mud.In giant bold type, the headline read, "Fake Heiress and the Spineless Wonder: A Bankrupt Con Man's Ultimate Clown Show."Leo's head spun. The last of his pride crumbled."Look! Isn't that the clown from the paper?"A few homeless men passing by pointed at Leo under the overpass and laughed.A drunk tossed his half-eaten burger at Leo's head."Just my luck! The bastard who tried to con the governor's daughter is stealing our sleeping spot!"Mayonnaise ran through Leo's hair and into his eyes. He was too weak to fi

Wind and rain battered the empty road up the hill.Leo's white suit hung in muddy rags. His right arm dangled at his side, dislocated when he'd fallen on the way.At last, he reached the estate gates. The 16-foot black iron gates were shut tight. Leo sank down in front of them and gripped the icy bars with his left hand."Elena! Elena! I was wrong! Come out and see me!"Leo wailed hoarsely in the pouring rain."Remember sharing one bowl of macaroni in that basement? You said you'd stay with me whether we were rich or poor!"Please forgive me! That fake heiress seduced me. Greed blinded me!"We built that company together. Can you really destroy everything we worked for?"He kept shouting as he slammed his forehead against the iron gate.Dull thuds echoed as he struck it again and again. Blood ran from his hairline, staining the iron gate red.Minutes later, gears ground, and the heavy gates swung open.Wild hope lit Leo's eyes. He thought his little show of suffering had won me over.I

"And just hours ago, you sent someone to break her leg."The hall fell silent except for Leo's ragged, desperate breathing."Elena... Elena Rockwell?"Leo slumped in the puddles of spilled champagne, clutching his hair in both hands.Three years of memories rushed through his mind. The woman who'd made soup from cheap potatoes in that old kitchen every day to save him money. The woman who'd stayed up all night checking the books with him when his company was failing. The woman whose eyes had turned cold when he'd handed her a $30,000 check. And all along, she'd been the governor's only daughter!"No... It can't be. It can't be!"Leo slammed his head against the floor and screamed.Handcuffed, Chloe spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva. Her face crumpled as she realized what she'd done. "Impossible! That woman's just a country orphan. There's no way she's the governor's daughter!"Her hair a wild mess, she kept repeating, half-crazed, "This can't be happening!"An officer tightened her

A battering ram smashed the heavy doors open from outside with a boom.Dozens of heavily armed state troopers poured in and chambered rounds in their rifles in unison. The room gasped. Michael Hayes, chief legal counsel to the Texas governor, strode down the red carpet, his face stern.Leo's smile froze, then spread even wider. He straightened his bow tie, pushed through the guests, and hurried over to greet Michael."Mr. Hayes! You came in person!"Leo held out both hands, speaking loudly enough for the room to hear."I knew it. My future father-in-law is too busy to get away, so of course he sent you with an engagement gift for Chloe and me!"The guests whispered about how close Leo must be to the governor's family.Michael didn't even glance at Leo's outstretched hands. He just waved the guards forward to block him.An officer drove the butt of his rifle into Leo's chest, sending him stumbling back.Michael took an order stamped with the Texas state seal from his briefcase and held
