Chapter 3

Penulis: Perfect Timing
I clenched my fists so tight my nails dug into my palms.

"Wade, that's too much!"

"Too much?" Wade's voice got louder. "You're following me? Trying to make me look bad? Listen up, Melanie, if Sally isn't happy today, you can forget about driving your car away!"

Behind us, a driver stuck his head out and yelled, "Move it up front! The cops are on their way!"

Sally, though, looked like she was having fun. With the other drivers yelling in the background, she tilted her chin up and peered down at me like she was the queen of the world.

"Let's do this, Melanie," she said in a slow, clear voice, "Get out of the car, stand in front of me, and apologize out loud. Say, 'Ms. Larson, I was wrong. I shouldn't be jealous of you or bother you.' Say it, and we can all leave."

My head was spinning.

They had the nerve to treat me like that!

"Have you lost your mind?"

"You won't apologize?" Sally smirked. "Then we'll just wait. We're not in a hurry, but I'm not sure about you and your passengers, or the drivers behind us."

Wade chimed in, "Hear that? Sally's giving you a chance. Don't throw it away!"

The passengers had heard everything.

I heard someone mutter, "Who are these people..."

"They're bullies..."

"Great, there goes my perfect attendance. I'm going to get you two!"

"I'm going to be late for class, too. Waaa, I... I'm done for, might as well take you on since I'll get scolded anyway..."

I looked back at the passengers.

They were all strangers, some anxious, some upset, but most looked at me with sympathy.

An older gentleman shook his head at me, signaling me not to give in.

The honking behind us had turned into a loud mess, with people getting out of their cars to see what was going on.

If things kept up like that, the whole road would be stuck.

I was torn between doing my job right and feeling totally embarrassed.

"Come on!" Wade yelled, kicking the bus tire. "What's taking you so long? Get off and say sorry to Sally!"

His words were the final blow.

They had walked all over my pride, and then they were trying to break me completely.

My hands shook as I reached for the door button to get off.

"Let's see if they can handle the anger of the crowd if I open the door..." I thought to myself.

With a loud snap, the front door of the bus flew open.

I spun around, stunned, and saw a bunch of determined people storming out.

A voice came through the gap in the door.

"If those fools don't care about decency, then we know a thing or two about fighting!"

  • He Picked the Wrong Bus   Chapter 11

Amelia was a slim, middle-aged lady with a face that showed she had worked hard all her life, and right then, she looked really worried. The moment she saw me, she tried to grab my hand, but I stepped aside."Melanie, please..." her eyes were all red, "Wade knows he messed up, he really does! Can't you forgive him for the three years you were together? He's out of a job now, and people are always talking about him. He's scared to even leave the house... If this keeps up, he's going to be wrecked!"I had never seen her act like that before. When I was with Wade, she always acted like I was not good enough for him, like I was just a bus driver.I looked at her calmly and said, "He's not ruined because of me. He did that to himself with his own choices.""Yes, yes, it's all his fault, he's the one who hurt you!" Amelia said through her tears. "However, you two had some happy times, didn't you? Can you really stand by and watch his whole life fall apart? That Sally isn't any good, eit

The next day, Wade's company made an announcement. They had given Wade a serious talking-to about his bad behavior and told him to take time off to think about what he did.The company also said sorry to everyone online for the trouble and promised to teach their workers better work behavior. The mall where Sally worked said they had told Sally to take time off too. They would wait for the results of the investigation to decide if they should fire her.Wade and Sally were then the talk of the town, and not in a good way. They were too scared to leave their house because people had thrown trash at their front door. Wade's new car, an Audi he loved, was smashed up by someone who was really mad online. The person who did it picked a spot where the cameras could not see, so all Wade could do was deal with the mess without being able to do anything about it.Sally's parents called from their hometown, really mad at her for embarrassing the family.Wade's parents were upset too and to

I skipped the café.Instead, I dusted off my old Twitter account and typed out a long post.No whining, no tears, just a clear timeline and the plain truth. I posted a picture of the traffic report from the police and wrote: [The police have figured out what really happened. As for the lies spread about me online, I've saved all the screenshots as proof, and I'll stand up for myself, just like the law says I can. Also, a big thanks to the brave passengers on the bus today, you guys are awesome.]Next, I tagged a few passengers like Leonard, sporty Suzy Wallace, and the guy with glasses, James Russell, who were ready to back me up in public.Leonard was quick to share my post: [I was there on the bus, and I can say every single word is true. That rude couple, making out in the street and messing with traffic, even made the bus stop and demanded the driver say sorry, can you believe it? We've got the bus camera to prove it!]Suzy chimed in with a tweet: [In all my forty years, I've

The incident was put on pause for the moment. As I stepped out of the traffic police station, the evening had set in.Leonard gave my shoulder a reassuring pat. "Miss, don't waste tears on such worthless guys. You stood up for yourself today, and that's what counts. We don't start trouble, but we don't run from it either."I thanked him, feeling a wave of gratitude.Other passengers had sent messages to check in on me. I replied with a short update, and they all expressed their outrage, offering to testify if I ever needed it.Wade and Sally left with their tails between their legs. Before he drove off, Wade gave me one last look, his eyes as chilling as a snake's.I had a feeling that was not the end of it.I was right. That night, my phone was flooded with calls from unknown numbers. When I answered, the voice on the other end hurled insults. "Lousy bus driver, picking on the little guy!""Cheating and still think you're in the right? Just go away!" Meanwhile, a hot topic

The mood was serious in the station's mediation room.Officer Lynch pulled up the bus's security video. The front camera showed everything inside the Audi: Wade and Sally kissing, with Sally's hand sneaking into Wade's shirt. The back camera caught the Audi swerving and braking suddenly. The video was quiet, but it spoke volumes.Wade's face went from white to red to blue. Sally was too ashamed to look, just playing with her fingers."Now, do you have anything to say?" Officer Lynch asked Wade.Wade fumbled for words, "We... we're just really close, that's not against the law, is it? However, she honked her horn and startled us, and that's when I accidentally swerved the car...""Accidentally?" Officer Lynch tapped the screen, "That swerve and brake looked pretty deliberate to me. Plus, the law says you can't use your phone or watch TV while driving because it's not safe."You were kissing while driving, which is definitely not safe, and you broke the law first."He paused, the

Officer Lynch turned to Wade, "So, they're saying you were kissing in the car. Is that true?"Wade denied it straight away, "No way! We were just talking. She's making stuff up!""I have a dashcam," I said, keeping my cool, "The bus has cameras in the front and back. We can look at the footage from earlier."Wade's face went pale.Sally quickly added, "However, can the dashcam really pick up all that detail? And with the angles, it could be wrong, right? Officer, they're all teaming up on us!"Officer Lynch, with his keen eye, had a good guess about what happened just by watching how everyone reacted. However, he still needed proof."Let's all head back to the station and check out the dashcam," he said. "However, first, let's move these cars and get traffic going again."Wade did not like it, but he knew better than to argue with a cop. He shot me a mean look and muttered, "Melanie, just you wait."They moved the Audi to the curb, and the bus had to park for a bit too. Officer
