Chapter 1

Author: Knit Knot
When the line of text first appeared in front of me, I thought my grief had overwhelmed me, making me see things.

But after a moment, it was still there. And it kept changing.

"If Annie goes up to the mountain now, she'll see Matteo. He bought a whole villa up there for his mistress. It's being renovated right now."

"Easy for you to say. Annie hasn't eaten properly in three days because she's so sad. She can barely walk without support. How is she supposed to climb a mountain on her own?"

I looked at the live chat, then headed straight up the mountain without looking back.

My weak body felt unbearably heavy. When I was close to the summit, I heard Matteo Cassimo's voice.

"The funeral she held for me isn't over yet?"

One of his men, Tony Delmonte, replied, "Not yet. Ms. Morello even invited a priest today to pray for you. It seems that she doesn't realize that you faked your death."

Matteo smiled coldly, then said with mocking amusement, "She really believes anything I tell her."

"Ms. Morello has always listened to you."

Matteo smiled, tossing out the words "Go comfort her for me" as if he were doing a favor before turning to leave.

Tony froze in place, hesitating for a moment, then hurried after him. "Don Cassimo, forgive me for asking, but have you really fallen for Ms. Rossi? You've even faked your death just to delay your wedding to Ms. Morello."

My chest tightened. I leaned against a nearby tree, my body trembling uncontrollably.

Then, I heard Matteo say, "I don't know either. But for now, I don't want Julie to leave me."

Tony asked again, "Well, what about your wedding with Ms. Morello?"

Matteo casually said, "Postpone it. Once I've had my fun and get bored, I'll show up and marry Annie. But I can't spend my whole life with just one woman. That would be too boring."

"Yes, sir."

When I heard that, my whole body turned stiff. A gust of wind cut through my skin like a blade, sharp and freezing.

Those past few days, I prayed to God again and again for Matteo's safety. I was even willing to trade my own life for his.

I had never imagined that this was the truth.

"Mrs. Valente."William stepped out of a Rolls-Royce. Lately, he had been picking me up every day.I walked over and slipped my arm around his. "William, this man keeps following me, saying strange things."William looked down at Matteo, then took my hand and pulled me behind him. "Who are you?"The scene hit Matteo hard, and his composure faltered. "I'm Matteo Cassimo, Annie's ex-fiance.""Oh. If I remember correctly, weren't you dead? It took you this long to crawl out of the grave?"Matteo clenched his fists. "You and Annie are just in an arranged marriage. I'm the one she truly loves!""Annie is mine," William said firmly. The comments in the live chat poured in."This is a classic ex-boyfriend move—fakes his death, then comes back just to embarrass himself.""Without Annie's family backing him, his worth is nothing compared to William.""He's raising his fist? The bodyguards don't even need to lift a finger. He's completely useless.""I've never seen a male lead fall t

The next morning, I lay curled on my side in William's arms. His arm was wrapped around my waist, his warm breath brushing against my neck.Flashes of the night before interrupted my thoughts—the way his hands had held me in place. My ears grew hot."What the hell? They've already slept together?""Where's the detailed scene? I need to know exactly what happened!""There was so much detail for Matteo's romance, but when it comes to William, it gets skipped? Unfair!"William cleared most of his schedule and flew me to a private island somewhere in Erowe for our honeymoon.Far from the noise of Newford, I let all my worries slip away. The beautiful scenery helped a lot.But for the first few days, I still woke up in the middle of the night, crying for no reason. Even I found it strange, but I couldn't stop.At first, William didn't know what to do. Later, he would pull me into his arms, kiss away my tears, and gently coax me back to sleep. There was a faint scent about him that

I froze for a moment before I realized what William meant. Then, I lifted my arms and wrapped them around his waist. The photo was taken. That very day, the media broke the news. By night, both families had finalized the wedding, and the engagement date was set.As the birthday party came to an end, I saw Tony again. He looked at me, his expression dark. Gone was the polite warmth he used to show me. There was even a trace of hostility now.The live chat commenters spoke up for me."It's not like Matteo is the only man in the world. Annie is beautiful and capable. Why shouldn't she choose someone better? Besides, he's the one who betrayed her first. This is the ending he deserves.""This is hilarious. This guy shows up uninvited, brings a bunch of useless junk, and now he's sulking."Seeing that I was alone, Tony walked over and questioned me, "Ms. Morello, Don Cassimo has only been gone a few days, and you're already getting married to someone else. Don't you think that's inapp

I stood by the window, still thinking about the birthday party, when a message from Matteo popped up. His profile picture was a star against a black background."The meaning behind that doesn't need explaining.""Let's applaud the man who's been stalking Annie's Instagram on encrypted apps and finally worked up the nerve to message her today."I scrolled through his Instagram feed. It was almost all official family updates, with the occasional photo of him working out, skydiving, or flying a helicopter over fjords.Back in high school, William had far more admirers than Matteo. As the heir to the Valente family, William had always been the center of attention. He reminded me of my philandering father—never far from a scandal or danger. After Matteo confessed his feelings to me, William basically disappeared from campus. I later heard he'd been sent to Erowe early to take over part of the family business. At the time, I actually felt relieved. As my relationship with Matteo deepen

That night, I went home and had a few drinks on my own. I rarely drank, so it didn't take long before my head felt heavy and groggy.I was completely unaware of the door opening and the dark figure stepping inside. It wasn't until I slipped under the covers and reached out, touching a burning hot body, that I realized something was wrong.I shot upright and got out of bed to turn on the light. A naked man appeared before me, his eight-pack abs sharply defined. My gaze moved upward to his handsome face. His eyes were so cold that they made people instinctively keep their distance. The comments appeared before me."Oh, my God! I've been waiting for the second male lead forever. He's the best character in this whole story. There's no contest.""Annie, can you kiss him for me? Please."I instinctively stepped back. The man narrowed his eyes, his presence suddenly dangerous enough to make my heart race. "Annie?"I froze. It took me a moment to remember who he was.It was William, t

My thoughts snapped back to the present.I had finished packing. The wind knocked over a photo of Matteo and me. I used to treasure this photo. Now, I stepped over it without a second glance.Matteo was already dead to me.As I left the Cassimo residence, Carla was still shouting insults behind

When I opened the door, I saw Matteo's mother, Carla Mezzina, standing there, her eyes red.The moment Carla saw me, she raised her hand to hit me without hesitation. "This is all your fault. "Now that Annie knows the truth, she'll finally see what a scumbag Matteo is, right?""Please, don't let her stay love-blind. What's so great about that douchebag?""I want to see her tear that bastard apart!"I saw the last comment. But instead of moving forward, I turned and walked away, limpin
