Chapter 3

Author: Noorie
The crowd burst into applause. Nora looked up toward my private box, holding the moon-sapphire up so the light caught it, throwing me a sweet, victorious smile.

“I don't even know the Alpha of the Shadow Pack, yet he gave me something valuable. What could be his intention?” She said excitedly, her eyes shining with excitement.

Before our father could answer her, Lucian stepped up, not bothering to ask my permission before leaving. “Perhaps he likes you, Lady Nora.”

“Really?” She giggled. “And you, Lucian?”

“I won the bid against Isadora, yet you don't look sad for your mistress. Do you like me as well?” Her words were laced with mockery and pride towards me.

Lucian remained silent, but her muscles tightened. I could feel the answer already forming in his chest.

Of course he liked her. That was why he used his secret identity to help her win the bid despite making a promise to me.

I could not tolerate them flirting before my eyes. So, I turned to Lucian and said, “Since you like her so much. Stay with her. No need to follow me from now on.”

Throwing out these words, I turned to leave. But Nora chased after me. She grabbed my arms and said, feigning innocence, “Sister, I didn't mean to offend you. Please don't be so upset.”

“Don't call me sister!” I shoved her off. She almost fell. Lucian quickly grabbed her waist and helped her stand up.

“Isadora!” He yelled. His voice was still laced with discipline and respect, yet his eyes were ice-cold. “Why do you hate Nora so much?”

“You are asking me why?” I raised my eyebrows, a lump forming in my throat as I said in a hoarse voice, “You just helped her snatch my mother's pendant. She always snatches what's close to my heart, including you!”

“Isadora…” he whispered my name. For a flicker of a second, I felt no coldness in his voice as he seemed to come after me. But then Nora’s voice came from behind.

“Ah… my ankle!” She screamed, “It's been sprained.”

Without a single thought, Lucian turned back and grabbed Nora in his arms. He looked at me, his eyes turning back to ice-cold as he said, “I’ll be taking leave for a day, Lady Isadora.”

He then turned back and left with Nora in his arms. I stared at my bleeding arms. Nora had grabbed my arms so fiercely that her nails had dug in, causing me severe pain. But of course, he would not see that.

The deep crescent gashes left by Nora’s manicured nails burned, but the sting was nothing compared to the absolute clarity settling over my mind.

I didn't bandage the wounds. I let the blood dry, a crimson map of my foolishness.

Two hours past midnight, the sharp, distinct scent of burning silver and scorched ozone drifted through the open archway of my courtyard. It was coming from the secluded rose garden behind the eastern wing—Nora’s territory.

I walked toward the smoke, my slippers making no sound on the cobblestones.

Nora sat on a stone bench near the central fountain, a small, portable forge glowing with harsh orange heat beside her. In her right hand, she held heavy iron pliers. Clamped between the teeth of the tool was my mother’s moon-sapphire pendant.

She was dangling it directly over the white-hot coals.

"It really is a fragile thing," Nora mused aloud, her voice dripping with lazy satisfaction. "Just like your dead mother. A little heat, and the metal begins to melt away."

"Nora."

She didn't flinch. She simply turned her head, offering me a sly, triumphant smile in the firelight. "Oh, Isadora. Did I wake you? I was just testing the metal. They said it was made of pure platinum, but it seems so soft..."

With a deliberate flick of her wrist, she opened the pliers.

The pendant dropped into the heart of the coals. The metal filigree sizzled, blackening instantly as the Sapphire cracked into three dull, lifeless pieces.

Years of suppressed rage, of watching my mother wither away while this bastard child ate off our gold plate, exploded in my chest. My wolf, dormant and freezing, roared to life with terrifying force.

Before Nora could even pull her hand back, I closed the distance between us.

I grabbed her by the throat, slamming her backward onto the stone bench with enough force to crack the masonry. The forge overturned, spilling red-hot embers across the grass.

"Ah—! Isadora, let go—!" Nora choked out, her hands clawing wildly at my wrists.

"You take her place, you take my father's love, you take the jewels off her corpse," I hissed, my voice vibrating with an Alpha's bloodline command that forced her eyes to widen in genuine terror. "And now you burn the last piece of her?"

I didn't use a weapon. I pulled her up by her collar and delivered a hard, brutal backhand across her jaw.

I raised my hand to strike her again.

"GET OFF HER!"

A terrifying, suffocating pressure slammed into my back like a battering ram. I hit the ground hard, my elbows scraping against the gravel, reopening the claw marks Nora had left on my arm earlier tonight.

Lucian stood over Nora, his massive frame trembling with suppressed rage. His eyes burned a lethal, obsidian black, his wolf dangerously close to the surface. He dropped to one knee, wrapping a protective arm around Nora’s shaking shoulders as she dissolved into loud, hysterical sobs.

"Lucian... she tried to kill me!" Nora wailed, burying her face into his chest. She followed me here... she attacked me because of the pendant! I was just trying to clean it for her... to give it back..."

Lucian’s jaw worked, a muscle jumping violently in his cheek. Then, his eyes locked onto mine.

"Why do you hate her so much, Isadora?" Lucian spat, his voice dropping into a low, murderous growl.

Isadora's POVThe silence of the northern woods was the only thing that had ever truly belonged to me. It didn’t demand my silence; it simply shared it.I stood by the wooden table, my fingers stained green and brown with the bitter mountain roots I had spent the afternoon grinding. Then the quiet shattered. The thundering of hundreds of heavy hooves vibrated through the floorboards. Iron armor clanked, horses neighed into the freezing air, and the sheer, suffocating pressure of a High Alpha’s aura washed over the cottage. My heart did not leap with hope. It sank into a cold, hollow pit.The heavy oak door swung open, framing the winter storm outside and the figure standing on the threshold.Lucian.He wore the dark, shadow-gold armor of the realm’s supreme ruler. His dark hair was windblown, his breathing ragged, and his eyes were wide with a frantic, wild energy."Lucian," I said quietly, the sound of his name feeling foreign on my tongue. "Why are you here?"He took a step into the

The silence that followed was heavier than the shadow-gold blade at my hip.Nora flinched as if struck, her outstretched hand freezing mid-air. "Lucian... please," she whimpered, the smooth coaxing tone falling apart into sheer panic. "I was deceived! Isadora lied to me! She made me think—""You dare utter her name?" My voice vibrated with a low, primeval growl that brought the surrounding nobles to their knees, their hands covering their ears in agony.I stepped past her, ignoring her desperate, trembling figure, and knelt in the dust. My fingers gently brushed away the dirt from the ancient crest etched into the shadow-gold ring before picking it up. I pocketed it, my gaze locking onto Nora with a coldness that made her shrink back."Three years," I said softly, every word heavy with the weight of my past foolishness. "For three years, you forced the savior of my bloodline to sleep in the servants' quarters. You took her mother's only legacy, the silver pendant, and burned it in the

"Charade?" I took a step forward, holding out the crushed velvet box in my palm. The ancient shadow-gold ring inside glinted under the sun, etched with the holy crest of my lineage. "It is no charade, Nora. For three years, I had been sneaking out to meet you, to watch you. Today, I stand before you without any duty holding me back. I have come to offer you my heart."For a second, total silence gripped the courtyard. Then, Nora let out a harsh, screeching laugh."Are you insane?" She stepped back, looking at me with absolute contempt, her lip curling in revulsion. "Your heart? You are a lowly, nameless guard who spent three years running after my every whim like a desperate street cur! Do you think putting on a velvet cloak and bringing a few hired mercenaries makes you royalty? Your heart doesn't even compare to the dirt beneath my heels""Nora—""Shut your mouth!" she screamed, her cheeks flushing red with humiliated rage as she looked around at the murmuring noble crowd. "You pathe

Later that night, my beta, Rolan, showed up in my quarter. His chest heaving, his dark eyes ablaze with a fierce, unstable anger. As my Beta and closest confidant from our home realm, he had accompanied me into this territory under the guise of a loyal lower-ranking warrior. But tonight, he looked ready to tear the palace apart with his bare hands."Have you completely lost your mind, Lucian?" Rolan’s voice was a low, dangerous growl, tight with suppressed rage as he stepped into the room and shoved the door shut behind him. "A pet? She called you a dangerous pet! In front of half the noble bloodlines in this territory!"I didn’t move. I remained seated on the edge of the narrow cot, my fingers lightly tracing the sharp edge of the star-engraved dagger resting across my lap."Lower your voice, Rolan," I said evenly."Lower my voice?" Rolan stormed forward, his boots heavy on the stone floor. "I watched that arrogant she-wolf throw the dagger you forged in the dragon-fire onto a plate o

The moment Nora left, I sank to my knees holding my head in confusion. What was wrong with me? Nora was right. That was what I always wanted. To be closer to Nora. Then why was I suddenly feeling this mad? Why was Isadora’s absence affecting me this much?“Nora…” I chased after her. “I… I’m sorry. The shift… it was so sudden that it got on my head. I’m really happy to be your shadow guard.”“No worries…” Nora replied, a sweet and innocent smile touching her lips. “I knew you would be more than glad to serve me instead of that Isadora! In fact, I have already announced a celebration tonight. Pick me up on time. This time we will be entering together!”“Sure…” I replied.***The royal hall was blinding. Crystal chandeliers dripped with light, reflecting off the silk dresses and gilded armor of the pack’s highest noble families.I stood two paces behind Nora’s chair, rigid, my hand resting heavily on the pommel of my longsword. This was what I had bled for.Nora was the she-wolf foretol

  • He Recognized My Worth After I Was Gone   Chapter 6

Lucian’s POVThe silence in her empty quarters was louder than any roar of battle.I stayed on my knees, my fingers pinned to the stone floor by the sheer weight of the air. It smelled like nothing. No lingering trace of winter jasmine, no heat of her anger, no soft warmth of her presence. Just a sterile, freezing draft sweeping through the open window.Do not look for me.My wolf thrashed inside my chest, clawing at my ribs in a sudden, frantic panic that made my throat tighten until I couldn't breathe. The dark magic of the Whispering Woods was still sloshing through my blood, burning my veins, but the pain in my chest felt infinitely worse."Lucian!"Heavy footfalls echoed down the corridor, followed by the rustle of fine silk. Nora stepped into the doorway, her chest heaving slightly from chasing after me. She paused at the threshold, her eyes scanning the stripped bed, the bare wardrobe, and finally landing on me, kneeling on the rug like a broken man.A long, slow smile spread a
