Chapter 4

Author: SerenePrince
The Grant family estate was ablaze with golden light, buzzing with voices.

Lucas half-dragged me through the door. The moment I found my footing, I was met with a roomful of stares.

And the person seated at the center of the head table wasn't Lucas's grandfather.

It was Mara.

She was dressed in a couture gown today, dripping with jewels, looking every bit the queen holding court.

Beside her sat a potbellied, balding middle-aged man with his nose in the air.

"Lucas, Brenna, you two finally made it."

The moment Mara saw us, she rose and hooked her arm through the middle-aged man's with practiced intimacy.

She lifted her chin, unable to contain her smugness.

"Let me formally introduce everyone. This is Bruce, the heir to the Moretti family empire.

"Bruce is normally so busy he barely has a minute to spare, but today he pushed back nine-figure deals just for me."

The words had barely left her mouth before the entire Grant family erupted.

Everyone's face split into an eager, fawning grin as they jostled to raise their glasses.

"My goodness, so this is Mr. Bruce! What an honor, what an absolute honor!"

"Mara is so lucky to have caught your eye. We do hope you'll look after our family, Mr. Bruce!"

Bruce lounged in his chair, chin tilted up, not even bothering to lift an eyelid. He answered with nothing more than a dismissive grunt through his nose.

Lucas stood beside me, his face ashen, fists clenched so tight the veins stood out, but he didn't dare say a word.

Lucas's mother, Patricia, smiled her most obsequious smile. The moment she turned and saw me, the warmth vanished from her face, replaced by open contempt.

"Brenna, what are you standing there for?

"How did Lucas end up with such an ignorant, graceless woman! You can't even produce an heir, and you have the nerve to walk around with that sour face?

"Get over here and apologize to Mara and Mr. Bruce this instant!"

I stared at them all, cold and unflinching, then shook Lucas's hand off. "Apologize for what?"

My voice rang out sharp and clear as I swept the room with my gaze.

"Your son had an affair for three years. He let this woman destroy me until I lost my baby. And instead of making them apologize to me, you want me to grovel?"

The room broke into an uproar.

Lucas's face turned the color of a beet. "Brenna! Shut up!"

Mara's eyes reddened on cue.

She released Bruce's arm and drifted toward me, arranging her face into a picture of wounded fragility.

"Brenna, please don't be angry. Everything is my fault."

She reached for my arm as she spoke, and the instant her fingertips nearly grazed my sleeve, she let out a piercing shriek and threw herself dramatically backward.

"Ahhh—"

Mara crashed to the floor, both hands clutching her flat stomach as she curled into herself, writhing.

"It hurts... my stomach hurts so much..."

She pointed a trembling finger at me, tears streaming down her face.

"Brenna, I know you hate me, but why did you push me? The baby... what if something happens to Bruce's baby?"

The room froze. Then outrage erupted from every direction.

Bruce slammed his palm on the table and shot to his feet, the flesh of his jowls quivering.

"Are you people out of your minds! Nobody lays a hand on my woman!"

He drew himself up with all the terrifying weight of a top-tier heir and jabbed a finger in my direction.

"Guards! Grab this bitch and pin her to the floor!"

A squad of burly bodyguards in black surged forward.

Lucas stood rooted to the spot. His eyes met mine, and then, of all things, he took half a step back and chose to watch.

Two bodyguards seized my shoulders and forced them down. A vicious kick buckled the back of my knees.

Pain shot through me, and my body pitched forward against my will.

"Make her kneel and apologize! And break one of her hands while you're at it!" Bruce snarled.

My knees were a heartbeat from slamming into the marble floor.

Then the massive carved wooden doors at the entrance flew open, kicked in from outside.

"Touch her and I'll end you!"

The first thing I did after returning home was meet Lucas to finalize the divorce. He looked like he'd aged a decade in three months.Gaunt and hollow, with sunken eyes and a scruffy beard. Nothing left of the polished, confident man he used to be.Without a word, he handed me a newly drafted divorce agreement."Brenna, I'll walk away with nothing. Every share, every property under my name, it's all yours."His eyes were red, his voice as small as it could get."All I'm asking is... could you let me see you once in a while?"I didn't even glance at the agreement. I slid it right back."Lucas, stop with the martyr act."I looked at him the way I'd look at a complete stranger. No connection, no feeling."I'll take every cent I'm entitled to, not a penny less. As for seeing each other again, don't count on it."The moment the divorce was finalized, I walked out without a shred of reluctance and headed straight for the Maybach parked at the curb.Elliot stood by the car door, smiling, his

Three months later, I was in a quiet little town in Sweden.Fine snow drifted from the sky.I pushed open the glass door of a coffee shop, a hot Americano in hand, heading for the gallery on the corner.A tall figure stepped out from nowhere and pinned me against a red brick wall.A familiar cool scent mingled with the crisp after-snow air."Brenna, you're fast. You had me searching everywhere."Elliot stood in a long black coat, a thin layer of snow dusting his shoulders. His eyes were rimmed with red, and his voice carried a trace of undisguised hurt.I looked at this heir to a dynasty, a world apart from me in status, with connections that reached everywhere, and instinct made me want to pull back. For three months, I had cut every tie on purpose, determined not to get dragged back into the tangled mess of wealthy families."I think you have the wrong person, Mr. Moretti."I let my face go cold, my voice devoid of warmth. "We settled our accounts. Excuse me."I turned to leave, but

Elliot pulled a manila envelope from the inside pocket of his suit jacket and slapped it across Mara's face. The envelope burst open. A thick stack of photographs and bank transfer records scattered across the floor."Brenna's miscarriage three months into her pregnancy wasn't an accident!"Elliot's voice cut like a blade of ice. Every word landed on Lucas's nerves like a hammer blow."Take a good look. These are the transfer records showing you paid off the nanny to slip high-dose miscarriage pills into Brenna's prenatal medication."And this one is a surveillance screenshot of you sneaking to the staircase landing in the middle of the night to smear the steps with lubricant!"All of this, just so you could have Lucas to yourself and take Brenna's place."Lucas staggered toward the pile of evidence as if he'd been struck by lightning. With shaking hands, he picked up the photographs and records. When he saw what was on them, a sound tore from his throat. Raw, inhuman, agonized."Mara!

"You're too kind, Mr. Moretti. Just following your orders."Bruce remained on his knees, groveling with a sycophantic grin like a dog wagging its tail.Elliot let out a derisive scoff, his gaze drifting over the ashen-faced crowd behind Bruce. It came to rest on Mara, who sat crumpled on the floor, still reeling in disbelief."What's the matter, Mara? Surprised?"Elliot adjusted his cuffs with unhurried ease, every word dripping with undisguised contempt."A few weeks back, some old fools in my circle tried to set me up with a woman Lucas didn't want anymore."With each word, another shade of color drained from Mara's face."I don't do secondhand, so I had someone look into your background."Turns out you're a real piece of work. Stringing Lucas along like a puppet with one hand, clawing your way into bigger money with the other."Elliot's laugh was quiet, yet it raised the hair on the back of every neck in the room."I love a good show. So to flush you out, I had my driver Bruce put o

The lead bodyguard's baton was inches from smashing into Elliot's skull.Elliot made no move to defend himself. He simply lifted his chin. His gaze, cold as a grave, cut through the crowd and locked onto the quaking middle-aged man by the head table."Bruce, is this how you train your dogs?!"The words weren't loud, but they cracked through the hall like a bolt of thunder. What happened next made everyone's skin crawl."AHHH!"Bruce let out a shriek that could curdle blood. He shoved Mara aside and scrambled through the crowd on all fours. In his panic, he tripped over his own feet and hit the polished marble floor hard. But dignity was the last thing on his mind. He half-crawled, half-slid on his knees until he was right in front of Elliot.Thud!Bruce slammed his forehead against the floor, his voice shaking beyond recognition."M-Mr. Moretti! Please, sir, have mercy!"I swear I didn't know she was yours! You could put a gun to my head and I still wouldn't dare!"He kowtowed frantica

That roar tore through the hall like a thunderclap, and the air seemed to drain from the room.Every head turned toward the doorway.Elliot strode in against the light.Today he wore a perfectly tailored black suit, nothing like the languid, flirtatious man from the hotel room.In his place was the commanding presence of a man born to power, the kind that made people's blood run cold. His expression was carved from stone, and his gaze swept over the two bodyguards holding me down like the edge of a blade. One look. That was all it took. The two trained brutes actually let go of me and stepped back.I shook free and rubbed my aching shoulders as he walked to my side."What are you doing here?" I asked under my breath."Here to take you home." He positioned himself between me and the room, his voice gentle, but his eyes remained locked on the head table. When Mara got a clear look at who it was, she blinked in surprise, then burst into shrill laughter."Oh, it's just her little boy toy!"
