Chapter 2

Author: Puppy Blanket
Sometimes, when a lie is acted out too well, even I start to believe it.

He pulled me gently into his arms, his voice unbelievably tender.

"I paid a hefty price to bring in an experienced doctor. He'll start the treatment on your hand soon and help restore your health. Once you're better, we can try for a baby. And when that time comes, you can teach our child to play the piano. Wouldn't that be nice?"

Faced with Carl's affectionate concern, I simply offered a faint smile.

Noticing something off about my reaction, his brows furrowed. "What's wrong? Did someone say something unpleasant to you?"

"Yes," I replied. "I overheard someone at home calling me a cripple."

Carl's expression turned ice-cold in an instant. His gaze swept sharply across the room. "Who?"

I glanced at Iris.

She caught the look and instantly exploded, jabbing her finger at me. "Did I say anything wrong? You are a cripple! And now you dare nitpick at me after marrying into our family?"

The next second, Carl's hand moved like lightning, and he snapped one of her fingers.

The room filled with her anguished screams.

"Carl, how could you do this for some—"

But she stopped herself before finishing the word cripple. Clutching her hand, tears streamed down her face as pain nearly made her faint.

Carl stood there coldly, watching his sister writhe. His voice was devoid of emotion.

"I've let you off too easily in the past. If you ever say that to Reily again, I'll break your whole hand."

I watched it all unfold, and in that moment, I found Carl terrifyingly unfamiliar.

He spoke and acted like he was protecting me, even to the point of breaking his own sister's finger. Anyone unaware of the truth would've thought he loved me deeply.

But I knew better. Every move he made was simply to cover up his carefully constructed lies. What we once had… was long gone.

Ever since the tendons in my hands were severed, my fingers throbbed painfully with every spell of cold or rain.

Carl saw it, of course. Every time, he'd hold my hands in his and whisper sweet reassurances, promising he'd find the best doctors to heal me.

For a long time, I believed meeting him was the luckiest thing that ever happened to me. I thought no matter what happened, he'd always be there, standing behind me, shielding me from harm.

Never did I imagine that the very man I trusted would be the one to push me into that terrible nightmare.

And now, with Lucy's eyes injured, he wanted my corneas to replace hers, just so she could fulfill her dream of becoming the world's top pianist.

"Reily, what are you thinking about?" Carl's gentle voice snapped me back to reality. "I've punished Iris. Come on, don't stay angry."

"I'm not angry anymore," I replied. "It's just… my hands have only just recovered, and I still can't seem to play properly."

He tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear, smiling with indulgent warmth. "If you can't play well, then no one can."

I lowered my eyes, burying my emotions, then used the excuse of being tired to head to bed.

Deep into the night, I stared at Carl's sleeping face beside me. He looked so handsome, so perfect. Who would ever guess such cruelty lurked behind it?

I quietly got out of bed and unlocked his phone using his fingerprint.

His wallpaper was a photo of Lucy.

In the picture, she wore an elegant evening gown, seated at a grand piano, beaming as she held the World Piano Masters trophy in her hands.

That trophy… should have been mine.

A sour ache rose in my chest, and I couldn't stop the tears from spilling onto the phone screen.

Wiping them away, I steadied myself and opened the chat log between Carl and Lucy.

Lucy: [Carl, Reily is your wife. Are you really willing to give me her corneas?]

Carl: [You saved my life in that fire when we were kids. For you, I'd do anything. Don't feel guilty. If Reily loses her sight, I'll take care of her for the rest of her life.]

Suddenly, a memory from twenty years ago surfaced in my mind.

Back then, I had traveled overseas to compete in a children's piano competition, never expecting the hotel to catch fire in the middle of the night.

"A chance? You turned a healthy person into a cripple, and now you talk about second chances? Get lost, Carl, you're nothing but scum!"You and Lucy are both insane. What kind of sane person claims to repay kindness by inflicting pain? Lucy was a fool. Are you just as pathetic as her?"If you truly want to repent, then swear, right here in front of me, that you'll never interfere with my life again."Carl dropped to his knees, pleading, "Losing you is the greatest punishment. Reily, come back with me. I've already taken care of the Camden siblings. Let's start over. I promise I'll make you the happiest woman in the world."His kneeling didn't move me. On the contrary, I found him utterly revolting."Seriously, just fuck off. Oh, and I forgot to mention, I already have a boyfriend. If you so much as think of hurting him, I'll take you down with me."The word "boyfriend" visibly rattled him. Panic flared in his eyes as he tried to compose himself."That's fine… Even if I have to b

"Principal Walton, the students really like you. They're hoping you'll add a few more classes."The speaker was my close friend, Benjamin Wilder, a fellow pianist. Gentle and refined, he had a warmth in his smile that could heal even the most wounded heart. We had met by chance in this foreign land, and to my surprise, he chose to stay and help me build this school from the ground up.I smiled. "You're being modest. The kids adore you more. I'm just their second favorite."Benjamin lifted the plastic bag in his hand and gave it a shake. It was filled with various ingredients."I bought groceries. Want to come over for dinner tonight?""Sounds great."We chatted and laughed as we made our way to his home. The sun dipped slowly into the deep blue sea, painting the sky in hues of orange and gold. Seagulls circled above, calling out as they soared. In that moment, I felt nothing but happiness and freedom.A month later, Benjamin and I naturally confirmed our relationship. I thoug

"The staff discovered that Madam was no longer in the holding room. A few hours later, her body was found in the artificial lake. Parts of it had been eaten by fish. She was barely recognizable. But we managed to recover some of her personal belongings."When Carl rushed home, all he found were the divorce papers and a final note. One simple line was written in her handwriting. "Now that I'm dead, no one will fight your precious Lucy anymore."Suddenly, Carl coughed up a mouthful of blood. The agony crushed him from within."Reily… why didn't you wait for me to come back? I could've explained everything…"Just then, the butler entered the room, carrying the urn that held her ashes.Carl took it into his arms. Mixed in with the ashes were charred fragments of bone and a partially burned finger. He froze. And then, he broke down crying."You loved the piano so much… and I had someone cut your tendons. How could I have destroyed your dreams? Reily… I was blind. How could I not re

Lucy beamed. "So what if I wasn’t the one who saved Carl? My career still took off. Reily being my stepping stone was her own damn blessing."Just as she finished speaking, a staff member walked over and whispered, "Ms. Camden, your mic is still on."At that moment, Lucy turned to see Carl's face darken. The fury in his eyes could burn through steel.…Reese's legs buckled beneath him. He nearly lost his footing and stammered, "C-Carl, it's not what you think. Lucy and I just wanted to teach Reily a small lesson."Carl wasn't a fool. He could tell truth from lies. "Reily is my wife. And you disfigured her face?"Without warning, he kicked Reese square in the chest.Reese hit the ground hard. His ribs snapped beneath the blow. Blood spilled from his mouth as he gasped for mercy.Lucy, unable to bear watching her brother get beaten, rushed to defend him."You've misunderstood Reese! Reily tried to hurt him first, and he only scratched her by accident. He's innocent!"Smack!Ca

At eight p.m., the person I'd arranged arrived to pick me up.Under the cover of night, they smuggled me out of the Manos family estate without a sound. As the car moved forward, the silhouette of the villa shrank behind us. Just then, Carl called. His voice was cold and sharp."I've convinced Lucy not to call the police. But the condition is you kneel and apologize.""And if I don't?""Reily, don't push your luck!"I let out a sigh. "Carl, do you know what I regret most in this life? It's saving you from that fire. I should've let you die there. Maybe then my life wouldn't have turned out this miserable."I ended the call and immediately blocked his number. On the other end of the line, Carl stood frozen in disbelief.…"What's wrong, Carl?"Lucy noticed the change in his expression. A vague sense of unease crept into her chest. She had been standing nearby during his call with Reily and heard every word.Carl's eyes were clouded with something like confusion."She just s

"This time, I won't just ruin your hands. I'll blind you too. Let's see if you still dare to compete with me."The words hit me like a thunderclap. I never imagined Lucy's malice could run this deep.I turned to run, but before I could take more than a step, Reese swung a wooden stick hard against my legs. Then again, across my back, without mercy."Run again, and I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life crippled."In a panic, I grabbed a handful of dirt from the floor and threw it at his face. While he flinched, I snatched the stick from him and struck back.Lucy, who had been hiding in the shadows, suddenly lunged forward, shielding Reese with her body. The next second, Carl burst through the door, brow furrowed, eyes fixed on Lucy's bruised arm."Lucy, are you okay? Your hand! Does it hurt?"…Lucy's arm was turning purple. Tears spilled down her cheeks. She looked fragile and pitiful."Carl," she choked out, "Reily had me kidnapped. If Reese hadn't gotten here in ti
