Chapter 1

"Mrs. Vescari, the yacht will reach the designated waters shortly after midnight tomorrow," the man on the phone said. "Our people will remove you before the accident is reported.Within three days, Evelyn Vescari will be declared dead, and Claire Rowan will arrive in Milan."

He paused before asking, "Do you want to cancel the arrangement?"

I stood at the end of the hospital corridor and watched snow gather on the windowsill.

"Proceed as planned."

I ended the call, deleted the number, and slipped the phone into my hospital gown. Water still burned in my lungs when I breathed. I steadied myself against the wall and returned to my room.

Roman came toward me as soon as he saw me.

"Did the doctor give you permission to leave bed?"

He guided me back beneath the covers and adjusted them around my shoulders. Roman Vescari gave orders that senior members of his family rarely questioned, yet he handled me with endless patience.

He took a white pastry box from inside his coat.

"Lemon pastries from that bakery you like in Brooklyn."

The box was still warm. Snow had slowed traffic across half the city, but he had remembered that I hated hospital food.

The night nurse paused beside the bed. "Your husband stayed here until morning. I told him to rest, but he refused to leave."

Roman smiled politely and brushed the hair away from my forehead.

"She hates waking up alone."

He had cared for me this way throughout our marriage. When stomach pain kept me awake, he canceled family dinners and stayed home. Before my first formal Vescari gathering, he had the seating arrangements changed because he knew crowds made me uneasy. After a business associate insulted me at a private club, the man lost every contract he held with Vescari companies.

Everyone in New York believed Roman loved me. I had believed it too.

Five years earlier, Adrian Falcone promised to marry me after I graduated from design school. At the celebration, he walked past me and placed a ring on Celeste's finger in front of both families.

Roman found me after the guests began whispering. He offered no empty comfort. He only asked if I wanted to leave with him.

I married him three months later, certain that I had finally found a man who would choose me without hesitation.

That certainty ended the night before.

The Vescari family had hosted a charity dinner at its estate on Lake George. Celeste asked me to meet her in the boathouse because she wanted to discuss Adrian. Once we reached the dock, she seized my wrist and pulled me into the water. Then she began screaming that I had pushed her.

Roman heard us and ran from the house. Celeste was farther from shore, but he did not look at me before swimming past.

He carried her to the dock while the freezing water dragged me down. An estate security guard eventually pulled me out.

After I regained consciousness, I heard Roman speaking to Victor, his adviser, outside my room.

"You married Evelyn, and Celeste married Adrian," Victor said. "How long are you going to keep running whenever Celeste calls?"

Roman remained silent before answering.

"Celeste is part of my past. I married Evelyn, and I will give her everything Mrs. Vescari deserves."

His voice had been calm and sincere. I thought of the home he had chosen for me, the jewelry he bought, and every anniversary he had remembered. Roman had fulfilled every duty he associated with marriage, and he intended to continue.

The lake had exposed the one choice he could not control.

Roman opened the pastry box and offered me one.

"Are you still angry?"

"No."

He studied my face. "Celeste was closer. I did not have time to think. I know you were frightened, but she is still your sister."

The cameras near the boathouse would have shown him the distance between us. I did not remind him, and I did not tell him that I had watched him swim by.

"I understand."

The tension left his shoulders. He sat beside me and closed his hand around mine.

"Tomorrow is our fifth anniversary. The yacht is ready. We can spend the night at sea, and when you recover, we will discuss that trip to Milan."

Milan had once been the center of every plan I made. My former mentor, Theo Arden, ran a design studio there and had invited me to join his team twice.

I refused the first invitation because I wanted Adrian.

I refused the second after I accepted Roman's proposal.

"All right," I said as I took the pastry. "We will go to the marina tomorrow."

Roman kissed my forehead. His phone lit up before he could sit down again, and his expression changed when he read the name on the screen.

"There is a problem at one of the family hotels. I need to handle it. I will return before dinner."

He took his coat and left without waiting for my answer.

Less than a minute later, Celeste sent me an address on the Upper East Side and one line beneath it.

Follow him. You should see who those pastries were really meant for.

Lorenzo was sitting beside the window when I woke in the hospital. He called the doctor as soon as I opened my eyes. After examining me, she said I had minor burns and smoke inhalation. I could leave after two days of observation.Lorenzo poured me some water."The company discovered that your car reservation had been changed. We called you, but your signal disappeared. Your emergency location ended near the warehouse, so I contacted the police and followed them there."He explained that the warehouse's old Vescari access system had alerted Victor when the entrance code was used. Victor shared the alert and the last location from my emergency signal with Adrian, which allowed Roman and Adrian to reach the building before the police."What happened to Roman and Adrian?"He paused. "Victor is outside. He should tell you."Victor entered with ash still marking his suit.Adrian had died before the firefighters reached him. Celeste had also died inside the warehouse. The falling beam had da

Celeste pressed the blade closer, and a sharp sting touched my neck."Stay there," she told Roman and Adrian. "If either of you moves, I will cut her throat."They stopped inside the entrance.Adrian looked at me. "Are you hurt?""I am fine. Leave.""We are not leaving you here," Roman said.Celeste laughed. "You both promised to protect her three years ago. Adrian abandoned her at graduation, and Roman swam past her in the lake. Who is this performance for?"She took a storage drive from her pocket and placed it on my shoulder."This contains records from joint Vescari and Falcone port companies, including contracts and private payment ledgers. One command will send everything to the police and the press."Adrian's gaze shifted to the drive."You have a choice," Celeste continued. "Walk away, and I will delete the files. I may even let Evelyn go. Come closer, and both families will face investigations. You will lose your companies, homes, and positions.""She will not release me," I s

Roman and Adrian remained in Milan while Italian authorities reviewed the records surrounding my reported death. Neither man contacted me again. Three days later, Bellandi held a private preview for its spring collection in central Milan.Several of my pieces were displayed under Claire Rowan's name for the first time. After the last guest left, Lorenzo joined me beside the cases."Orders exceeded expectations.""The sales team invited the right clients.""They brought them inside," he said, looking at the wing brooch. "Your work made them stay."The staff began clearing glasses and presentation folders. Lorenzo offered me a ride, but I showed him the company car reservation on my phone."It will be here in two minutes.""Message my assistant when you reach home."I collected my coat and went outside. A black sedan matching the reservation waited at the curb. The driver knew my name and address. We had left the city center before I noticed we were moving away from my apartment."Is the

Adrian still held out the portfolio while Roman stood several feet away with my wedding ring in his palm.Employees leaving the office had begun to watch us. I pointed to the hotel across the street."You both want an answer. I will give you one, and then you will leave."The hotel lounge was nearly empty. I sat by the window with Roman and Adrian on opposite sides of the table.Adrian placed the portfolio in front of me."You drew these before graduation. After you disappeared, I learned that Theo invited you to Milan twice.""You knew about the first offer."His fingers tightened. "You said you wanted to stay in New York. I thought it was your decision.""I stayed because we were engaged."He opened the portfolio. My old letters and a ticket from my graduation exhibition rested between the pages."I kept everything.""These things show how much I once gave you. They say nothing about what you gave me."Adrian looked up."I followed you for years. I remembered every exam and every fam

I saw Roman outside my office four days after the award photograph appeared. He stood beside a black sedan across the street, without a driver or security detail. Three years had made him thinner, and exhaustion marked the skin beneath his eyes. His suit remained immaculate, but the confidence that once kept everyone at a distance was gone.I paused, then turned away."Evelyn."Roman crossed the street and stopped in front of me. He stared as if I might disappear when he blinked."It is you.""You have mistaken me for someone else.""Claire Rowan has existed for three years. She has no earlier employment history and no public photographs before Milan.""Some people value privacy."I moved around him. He followed without touching me."I found the man who arranged the yacht."My steps slowed."He would not tell me where you went, but he admitted you left the boat before the fire. Victor traced a second identity entering Italy. Then your photograph appeared.""What do you want?""I want t

Adrian's POVI read every file during the flight home. The boathouse footage showed Celeste pulling Evelyn into the lake. Her messages proved that she had called Roman away from the marina and sent photographs to Evelyn while she waited alone.Five years earlier, Evelyn had worn the same quiet expression when I proposed to Celeste at her graduation celebration. I assumed she would recover. When Roman married her, I convinced myself that everything had worked out.Now Evelyn was dead. I drove directly from the airport to Celeste's townhouse. Roman stood by the living room window, still wearing the clothes from the night of the accident.Celeste hurried toward me. "Roman has lost his mind. He is removing all my access to Vescari properties because of Evelyn."I avoided her hand and placed my phone on the table. The boathouse footage filled the screen."You pulled Evelyn into the water.""We argued, and she lost her balance.""Then you told everyone she pushed you.""I was frightened."I
