Chapter 3

Autor: Rising Cloud in the Mist
Liana's POV

For a moment, the room fell dead silent.

Zane's expression darkened, his features tightening as he shot to his feet.

"What are you going to do?"

Even now, his first thought wasn't our divorce—it was what I might do to Vanessa.

When he met my scornful gaze, he seemed to realize how out of line he was being. A conflicted look flashed across his face, and he let out a heavy sigh. "Lia, stop making a scene. Vanessa is carrying my child. I won't let anyone hurt her."

His expression hardened. "If you really can't stand having her around, I'll send her overseas for the rest of her pregnancy. But a divorce? Over my dead body!"

He slammed the door shut behind him.

Barely two hours later, the paperwork for sending Vanessa away started coming through on my phone, one document after another.

I stared at the long string of messages from Zane, but I didn't reply. Instead, I continued gathering evidence and forwarding it to my lawyer.

My lawyer had just finished drafting the divorce agreement and petition and sent them over. Before I even had a chance to open them, my hospital room door burst open.

Vanessa charged in, her face twisted with rage. She marched up and slapped me hard across the cheek.

"You slut! You're the one who got Zane to send me away, aren't you? You think getting rid of me will make him yours? Fine. If you want to play dirty, nobody gets off easy!"

The madness burning in her eyes sent a cold wave of dread through me, overwhelming the sting on my cheek.

A moment later, Martha Clark, Mom's caregiver, rushed in with panic written all over her face.

"Ms. Shelton, a group of people just burst into your mom's room. They took her off her life support and said they were moving her somewhere else for treatment. I couldn't stop them. They've already wheeled her out!"

Before Martha could even finish speaking, Vanessa smugly held up her phone.

"Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I still hold the hospital shares Zane gave me years ago. That old hag has been occupying a VIP suite all these years, wasting hospital resources. As a shareholder, I couldn't just stand by and watch, so I had her moved to where she truly belongs."

Her grin widened with every single word. Then, she pulled up a photo and shoved it right in my face.

In the photo, Mom lay alone in the morgue, looking deathly pale.

Without a ventilator, her chest rose and fell so faintly that it was barely visible.

"That old hag is as good as dead anyway. So, what do you think of the place I picked—Ah!"

Before Vanessa could finish speaking, I ripped the IV needle from the back of my hand, grabbed the glass from the nightstand, and hurled it at her, my eyes burning with rage.

By the time I came to my senses, I was already pressing a fruit knife against her throat.

"If anything happens to my mom, I swear you'll pay with your life!"

With that, I grabbed my crutch and turned to go find Mom.

I had barely turned around when Vanessa seized my hand and shoved the knife deep into her own stomach.

"Stop!"

The metallic smell of blood hit me at the exact moment Zane's furious roar echoed from the doorway.

Before I could process what was happening, I was violently shoved aside.

Zane scooped Vanessa into his arms, his eyes bloodshot with rage and panic. "Didn't I tell you to wait for me? Why did you run off?"

He was so frantic that his hands were shaking.

Vanessa just laughed through her tears, stubborn and defiant. "You keep saying I owe her, right? Fine! Then I'll pay her back with my life and our baby's too!"

With that, she passed out.

I collapsed onto the floor, clutching my stomach where it had slammed against the foot of the bed. A sharp pain tore through my belly.

"Zane, my baby—"

Before I could call for help, Zane picked Vanessa up in his arms and rushed out to find a doctor, without so much as a backward glance.

Martha hurried over to help me up, on the verge of tears. "Ms. Shelton, without a ventilator, I'm afraid your mom won't last long in the morgue!"

I clenched my fists, forcing myself to push through the agonizing pain.

Then I grabbed my crutch and stumbled out toward the morgue as fast as I could.

Liana's POVBefore the trial even began, I received a message from Zane.It didn't surprise me that he'd managed to find my contact info again.I hadn't expected him to stoop so low just to see me, even threatening me with what I cared about most."Lia, I know you never want to see me again. But I have your mom's ashes."For Mom's sake, I had no choice but to arrange a meeting with him before the trial.I hadn't seen him in months, and he'd lost a shocking amount of weight. He looked so gaunt and hollowed out that I barely recognized him."Give me back my mom's ashes. Anything else, you can take up with my lawyer."I sat down and took a small sip of water, keeping my expression completely flat.My coldness didn't seem to provoke him at all. Instead, he just stared at me without blinking, his eyes bloodshot.Just as my patience was running out, the corners of his lips twitched into a faint smile."Lia, I'll pay back everything I owe you," he began, his voice so hoarse that it

Zane's POVJust as the situation was about to spiral out of control, a commanding voice rang out from outside the room."Enough!"Mom walked in, her expression cold and stern."I'm the one who had Liana sent away," she said. "You'll never find her. From now on, you two go your separate ways. You have nothing to do with each other anymore!"I froze in shock. "Mom, why did you send Lia away? She's my wife! How can you say she has nothing to do with me?"Taking in my bloodshot eyes and realizing I was on the verge of losing control again, Mom raised her hand and slapped me hard across the face. Then she took the divorce agreement I'd signed myself from one of the bodyguards and threw it straight in my face."You're already divorced. Of course you have nothing to do with each other."With that, she spared a cold glance at Vanessa on the floor, her eyes flashing with disgust. "Take her to a doctor."Then her glare snapped back to me. "Take Zane back to the Gordon estate. Don't let

"Whose baby did you say that was?"The doctor looked startled by the fury burning in my eyes."I… I told you as soon as the surgery ended. Ms. Bailey wasn't far enough along for her fetus to have taken shape yet. The fetus that was already fully formed was, of course… your wife's.""Mr. Gordon! Mr. Gordon!"I staggered back two steps. "What kind of nonsense is this?"From Zane's expression, Martha could tell he truly had no idea what had happened. But when she glanced at Vanessa in his arms, everything instantly clicked."You don't know? Just a few hours ago, this woman had Mrs. Shelton taken off life support and sent straight to the morgue! The poor woman died all alone without even getting to see her daughter one last time!"Martha choked up. "Didn't you know that Ms. Shelton was pregnant? How could you let this woman treat her like this? Hasn't she suffered enough?"Martha had lost her husband at a young age and never had children of her own. Zane's POVThe doctor had barely finished speaking when Vanessa was wheeled out of the operating room.I hadn't really taken in what he'd said. I simply assumed he was hesitant to dispose of the fetus. With my mind entirely on Vanessa, I tossed out a quick instruction without even looking back."Don't worry about it. Just dispose of it as medical waste so Vanessa doesn't see it and get upset."The doctor opened his mouth to explain, but before he could say a single word, I was already hurrying after Vanessa toward her room."Mr. Gordon, we need a family member's signature before we can dispose of the fetus. You're listed as the father, so we need you to sign the consent form."A nurse wearing a surgical mask stepped into my path, holding a stack of papers.Without even glancing at them, I grabbed the pen and scribbled my name.I never imagined that the single glance I couldn't be bothered to give would leave me with a lifetime of regret.…It was only after seeing Vanessa ly
