Chapter 3

Author: Wealthy Dream
All these years, I ran myself into the ground trying to prove I was the best thing that ever happened to Steven. Late nights, back-to-back clients, nonstop grind. I thought I'd finally shown I was better than anyone he'd ever known.

But he was never on my side. Not from the start.

I leaned back, let out a long breath, tears slipping down.

This time... I'm living for me.

I had my lawyer draw up the divorce papers and wrote my own resignation. Both landed on Steven's desk through legal hands.

Then I checked out of the hospital, blocked him, and booked a flight to the coast.

I'd always been obsessed with the ocean. Back in college, I dreamed of beach towns, sunset walks, a dog, someone who actually gave a damn.

But Steven couldn't stand the sea. Later found out Tammy almost drowned as a kid. She was scared of water—so he bailed on Seavora for Harvon City.

***

A week after leaving Harvon City, I finally powered my phone back on.

Boom—hundreds of missed calls and texts.

Figures. Steven used to brag the company didn't need me. Guess reality's kicking in.

The screen lit up: 'Hubby.'

I paused, then answered. "Yeah?"

"Bree, what the hell is wrong with you? You ghost us now? Mr. Quandt's been blowing up my phone! You owe him that design—even if you quit. Ever heard of professionalism?"

Mr. Quandt wasn't just any client—he was one of the hardest to land.

He's the one who dragged me out for drinks on my wedding night. If I hadn't gone, we'd have lost the deal.

The company was barely crawling back then. I couldn't risk it.

So yeah, I left Steven alone on our wedding night.

Next day, I bought him that watch he always talked about—four grand.

The dress I wore? Less than fifty bucks. I'd had it for three years.

I clenched the phone as pain stabbed through my side.

"I'm sick. I resigned so I wouldn't hold the company back. Didn't you say Tammy was the real talent? That I was just dead weight? Well, congrats—you've got your shot now. Shouldn't you be thrilled?"

Silence. Then Steven snapped, "The doctor said it's not fatal. Get your ass back to work."

Not fatal?

I doubled over, coughing hard. Red smeared my palm.

"If that's all, lose my number. Sign the divorce papers. I want every cent I'm owed. From now on, talk to my lawyer."

As soon as I hung up, a new chat notification popped up.

Tammy.

Over a dozen photos—her all over Steven.

My temples pounded. I could barely breathe.

I stared at the keyboard for a while before backing out of Tammy's chat.

Not yet. It wasn't time.

Two weeks later, an unknown number lit up my screen.

The area code made me freeze. I hesitated, then answered.

Right away, Steven's voice exploded through the speaker.

"Bree! Help me! Tammy's trying to kill me!"

A week later, I started chemo.Curled up on the hospital bed, barely breathing through the pain, I heard the doctor let out a tired sigh. "Ms. Artego, your body's not holding up. The liver and gallbladder haven't healed, and chemo's brutal. If you keep pushing..."I coughed hard—blood splattered the sheet. "Can I make it one more month?"He hesitated. "If—""I have to."Because in one month, Steven and Tammy would be sentenced. And if I missed that? I'd die with regret.A month later, Jack showed up with a bouquet, hands shaking a little, voice rough. "I've got good news. Steven got twenty years. The company's gone—everything was seized. Total bankruptcy."I nodded, barely. He set the flowers down. "Tammy got nailed with attempted murder. Thirty years, but I pulled some strings. She's in for life now."My eyes dropped. Lids felt like concrete. "That's enough. More than I ever expected. I can go in peace now."Jack held my hand, let out a shaky breath. "Why'd it have to end l

At the station, Steven looked at me like I'd lost my mind. "You called the cops? Seriously? We're married—can't we handle this without dragging everyone into it?"He stepped in, eyes dark, reaching for my hand. "Come on. Let's just go home. Don't waste their time."I yanked back. "Talk to my lawyer."His jaw clenched. "Lawyer? Keep pushing, and I'm gonna snap."He was sweating—probably because the equity transfer was already moving, and Tammy was MIA.I gave a cold laugh. "What's got you so jumpy? Scared I'll finally bite back? You know exactly who Tammy is. She's up for attempted murder—I'm not letting her walk. Even if you two stole my company, she won't live long enough to enjoy it becau—"His phone buzzed. He checked it, face dropping, then bolted."What? The project's dead and Tammy ran off with the cash? Wasn't she just doing paperwork? How the hell did you let her get away?!"If Steven was dumb, Tammy was straight-up reckless. Her whole game? Use him to kill me, let him

By day seven of Steven's so-called caregiving, his mask finally cracked.I nudged the apple slices toward him. "These are huge. And raw. I can't eat this."He stared at the plate like it had insulted him, then got up and stormed out. Right as he hit the door, his phone buzzed. He shot me a look, then slammed the door shut. But the walls weren't exactly soundproof."It's been seven days and you still don't have the equity transfer papers? How long am I supposed to babysit Bree? This week's been hell. She keeps throwing up blood—if she's gonna die, she should just get it over with. And now the doc says there's a six percent chance she might bounce back? Six percent? Please. Just die and save me the hassle."I let out a deep sigh. My nose burned. I felt hollow—just completely wiped.I already knew Steven didn't love me. Knew he'd sell his soul for Tammy. But even strangers show cancer patients a shred of decency. After everything we'd been through—years of sleeping next to each oth

"What do you mean, late-stage stomach cancer? It's just a busted liver and gallbladder! Does your hospital even know how to run a diagnosis?"My eyes cracked open. Steven—face all banged up—was losing it on the doctor.I twitched my fingers. The monitor beeped like a warning siren."She's awake! Doctor, check again. She's never had stomach problems. It can't be cancer..."He latched onto my hand, crouched by the bed, rambling. "You've never even had a stomachache. How is this cancer?"I shot him a cold stare, choking back every word fighting to come out.Someone who doesn't love you will still think you're just playing on a swing—even if you're hanging from it.I tried yanking my hand away, but he wouldn't let go."Bree, I'm not letting go this time. I won't let go again."I shot him a death glare. "Steven, I've already decided. We're getting divorced. Keep this up and it's just sad. And if Tammy hears about it? She'll flip."He shook his head, tears streaking down his face.

"I already told you—nothing's going on between me and Bree. How many times do I have to say it? You begged me to bring her back, and now I'm the bad guy? Seriously, Tammy, you're such a hypocrite.""Oh, I'm the hypocrite? You've been holed up with her every day. You don't even look at me the same anymore. This is on me—I should've never come to you. I wrecked your marriage. If it weren't for me, you and Bree would be growing old together instead of... this."Ever since I made Steven stay with me while I worked, they'd been going at it nonstop. Tammy was petty and paranoid—exactly why I set this up. I wanted him to see who she really was.I thought it'd take time.It didn't. Two weeks in and the cracks were showing."Who are you trying to guilt now?" Steven snapped. "You think I don't know where you've been sneaking off to?"People are talking—about you and Daniel. Ever since you became GM, you've been real fast picking up how to flirt."Bree wasn't perfect, but she gave everythi

Tammy ripped the phone from my hand, eyes locked on Steven."Bree spent half her life chasing you. If she wants you by her side before she dies, then act like a decent husband and stay."She slammed the door so hard it made Steven flinch. He shot me a look of pure disgust. "Tammy's carrying my kid. I don't love you. How do you think she feels about this?"I didn't even blink. Just rolled out the blueprint, taped it down, and started jotting dimensions from the client brief.Steven started pacing, voice climbing fast."You're doing this on purpose, huh? Trying to mess with me and Tammy, 'cause you know we're solid. I don't love you. That's never changing."I kept sketching, head down. "Tammy knows I'm doing it on purpose. But ask yourself—why'd she still let you stay?"Steven froze, jaw tight. "I don't care about your mind games. Just finish the damn design. I'm out the second you're done. I can't stand you."I didn't stop drawing. "Can't stand me? Funny. I remember when your d
