Chapter 2

Author: Mellona
The banquet ended in bitter silence. I returned to my room alone. I had barely sat down by the fire when a magical raven sent by Lyla from the camp landed on the windowsill.

The raven spat out a memory crystal and a sheet of parchment.

The crystal immediately projected an image.

Inside a cabin, Silas held Lyla as he gently applied healing herbs, stopping now and then to kiss her swollen belly.

Lyla leaned against his chest with a sweet, taunting smile.

The tenderness in the image cut through my chest like a dull blade.

"For the rest of my life, you're the only one I'll ever love. I'll never betray you."

He had once whispered those words into my ear. Now they were a poisoned thorn, driving deeper every time I remembered them.

I curled my hands into fists so tight that even my fingertips trembled.

I couldn't tell where the pain came from: the jealousy of losing the man I loved or the bitterness of learning that our five years together had been a lie.

I waved the image away, and my eyes landed on the parchment. It was a petition to dissolve the mate bond.

Silas had already signed it.

Clearly, he'd signed it to keep his pregnant lover happy.

A witch had already witnessed it. Once we both signed it, the mate bond sealed by the Moon Goddess would be severed for good.

My finger hovered over the parchment, and for a moment, I hesitated.

As long as I didn't sign, this fake mate bond would still exist.

I could keep fooling myself and cling to the illusion of those five years together.

Then I remembered the daily wolfsbane, the stolen memories and power, and the way everyone had looked down on me. Whatever tenderness remained turned cold.

I bit my thumb and signed my name in blood.

The pact had barely begun to glow when I stuffed the parchment into the raven's beak. "Take this back to her."

I smoothed my skirt and leaned back as a mocking smile curled my lips. "And give them a message from me. Happy breeding."

A faint sting ran through my soul as the bond broke. It didn't tear me apart, but a heavy ache settled in my chest.

The master bedroom door exploded into splinters.

Silas stood outside, breathing hard, his eyes so red they looked ready to bleed.

He advanced, every movement rigid, crushing the parchment in his fist.

His chest heaved, and blood seeped through the bandage on his palm again as he clenched his fist.

Rage rolled off him, yet his massive frame trembled.

"You actually signed it?!"

His voice ripped from his throat.

He hurled the document into the fire and watched it burn to ashes, but it wasn't enough.

He turned on me, his gaze dangerously intent, and closed in one step at a time, using his dominant scent to force me into submission.

"Seraphina, you know I can't live without you!

"That document was garbage. Lyla went on a hunger strike to make me sign it!"

He pressed one hand against the back of my chair, caging me against him. "You could see I was forced into it. So why did you sign?

"Do you want to get rid of me that badly?"

His fury ignited my own.

"Forced?" I stared at him, my voice sharpening with every word.

"Silas, you swear you'll never break our bond, and meanwhile you're out sowing your seed in someone else.

"Do you know what you look like right now? A stray dog snarling over its bowl while prowling for scraps elsewhere.

"It's not that you can't live without me. You just can't stand that I'm the one doing the leaving."

Silas went rigid. The last of his self-control was about to snap.

Suspicion flickered across his face. For a second, my cold, sharp expression must have reminded him of the proud woman I used to be.

But he dismissed the thought almost at once. The wolfsbane could not have failed.

A few days later, the Alpha King's Court convened at the Supreme Tribunal of the North.Under the soaring dome, the air was heavy with tension.Backed by Elias's absolute royal authority, I could finally cut this filthy past out of my life for good.I stood on the dais above Silas, who knelt below in pure silver chains. The silver hissed as it burned his wrists, suppressing every trace of his wolf's strength. He knelt there, red-eyed, his gaze locked on me."No... Seraphina, please don't do this."At last, he felt real fear.I ignored his begging, lifted my head, and looked the chief judge straight in the eye."I, Seraphina Ashcroft, ask this court to confirm the following:"The document dissolving our bond, signed by both Silas and me, is fully valid. The false mate bond he forced on me through kidnapping, drugging, and lies has been void since the day the document was signed."And today, before this court, I state it again. I reject the mark Silas forced onto my neck. I reject his sc

After the banquet, Elias and I walked out of the hall side by side. The guards lining the corridor bowed their heads under the Alpha King's power. His broad hand hovered at my waist, not quite touching, yet claiming me all the same.We were about to get into the royal car.Suddenly, an engine roared from the shadows.A nauseating cloud of exhaust rolled toward us, mixed with the foul scent of a frantic lowborn wolf.Lyla, who'd followed Silas all the way to the North, raced out of the trees in a car.Jealousy and despair had driven her completely out of her mind.Harsh white headlights cut through the dark."Die! All of you, die!"She screamed as she floored the gas, ready to take us all down with her.The tires shrieked against the ground.Silas, who'd been lurking on the palace steps like a ghost, saw it and rushed over.He was already badly hurt, but he stumbled into the middle of the road anyway. He spread his arms wide, trying to put his own body between the car and me.There was

The Northern capital held a lavish coronation banquet in its palace of ice and snow.Under a huge crystal dome, nobles from every pack raised their glasses to Elias on his throne, all dressed in their finest.I sat beside Elias, wearing the Moon Goddess's crown as a symbol of supreme power, and looked over the hall below. At the height of the banquet, a burst of raw power blew the heavy oak doors inward.Silas staggered in like a crazed lone wolf. His clothes were in rags, and he was covered in dark, dried blood from the long journey and his reopened wounds.Under the disgusted stares of every noble in the North, he stumbled down the long red carpet like a beggar pleading for mercy. At the foot of the throne steps, he collapsed onto the cold marble floor."Seraphina..."His scarred hands trembled as he raised the recovered gems and bone carvings above his head, his voice stripped of every trace of pride. "I got them back for you."Please, will you forgive me? Come home with me."The ha

Silas sat in the pack's surveillance room like an empty shell, staring blankly. He replayed the magical recording from the front gates again and again. On the screen, I entered the powerful man's car without looking back. The finality of my departure pierced Silas's heart.A chill seeped into his bones. At last, he understood that he'd lost me forever. He stumbled out of the surveillance room and went to the Luna's bedroom, which Lyla had torn apart.Shredded fabric and broken furniture covered the floor, each ruined piece mocking the indulgence and stupidity that had brought him here.Silas sank down in the wreckage, searching through the dust with shaking hands until he found a broken wolf-fang carving. Two years earlier, when I still had no memory, I'd carved it for him with a grinder, bit by bit, as a charm to keep him safe.He remembered the grinder scraping my fingers raw. He remembered the pure trust in my eyes when I looked at him then.Regret swept over him like a black tide a

A deep engine roar rolled through the night as an SUV sped up to the gates and stopped. The dark-gold crest of the Northern royal house gleamed coldly on its side beneath the moonlight. The door opened. A tall, stern man stepped out, every movement controlled. It was Elias. He wore a perfectly cut black coat, and the sheer Alpha power radiating from him made the air feel thin. The pack guards who had just struggled upright collapsed again beneath that power, bowing so low they did not dare lift their heads.Elias ignored them like they were insects and walked straight toward me.He stopped before me, and his eyes held a tenderness so raw it hurt to see.He slowly reached out with a black-gloved hand and carefully smoothed my windblown hair."You've been through so much, my Luna."His rough voice carried five years of madness and obsession, along with the fierce reverence of a man who had found what he thought he had lost forever.I said nothing. I simply placed my hand in his warm palm

She reached for his sleeve."Silas, what's going on?""Get away from me!"Silas yanked his arm free so violently that Lyla fell back against the seat. One thought consumed him: Seraphina had recovered her memories. He had to reach the pack and lock her away again before the Reaper of the North arrived.Ignoring Lyla's terrified cries, he kicked the door open and jumped out without a second's hesitation. The instant he landed, his bones cracked and reshaped.A huge gray wolf burst through his expensive silk shirt as he shifted on
