Chapter 4

Author: Mellona
Silas realized at once that something was wrong. He raced along the riverbank and ordered the pack to seal every possible exit downstream.

The current had carried me a few miles downstream into the shallows, and my body was numb from the freezing water. Before I could regain consciousness, Silas tracked what remained of my scent and found me.

I survived. But the pup in Lyla's belly didn't.

The force of the rapids had torn away the bargaining chip she loved to flaunt.

Two weeks later, a small stone cairn stood among the pines on the hill behind the pack's territory.

Lyla knelt in the mud, her eyes red and swollen, her hair a wild mess.

"She has to kneel!"

Lyla screamed, her voice raw and ragged. "She killed your heir! I want her on her knees in front of this cairn, begging my baby's forgiveness!"

The pack elders chimed in too. "Harming an unborn pup is one of the pack's gravest taboos. She has to pay for what she did!"

"If we let a crime like this slide, who's going to respect pack law after this?" another elder added.

I stood in the cutting wind in a thin black dress, watching the pathetic spectacle without a flicker of emotion.

"Your jealousy killed your baby. You're the one who jumped off that cliff."

To calm Lyla, who was close to breaking, and silence the elders, Silas slowly turned toward me and brought the full weight of his Alpha command down on my shoulders.

My knees slammed into the gravel. Sharp pain shot through me, and blood seeped from the cuts.

I clenched my teeth and made no sound. I only stared Silas down.

The next second, Lyla rushed at me and raked her claws across my cheek.

Pain blazed through my face as my skin tore open. I did not cry. I memorized every face around me.

Back at the pack house, I was locked in my room, and Lyla's revenge didn't stop.

She invaded my private rooms, shredded every fine gown with her claws, smashed open my jewelry box, and stole every bone carving and gem that marked my rank.

Silas turned a blind eye. He simply looked at me and said, "As long as you admit you were wrong, I'll get your things back for you."

I never answered. I didn't even bother to look at him again.

When I still refused to submit, he used Lyla's recovery as an excuse to leave and helped her into a car headed for the camp.

As it pulled away, Lyla smugly gave me the finger through the window.

I watched the car disappear at the edge of the forest, then slowly straightened up.

The wound on my cheek should have taken days to heal. Instead, it scabbed over before my eyes, and the scab peeled away.

The near-fatal rapids had flushed five years of wolfsbane from my body and broken its hold over me.

The power buried inside me began to awaken. The fog in my mind lifted, taking the last of my anguish over Silas with it.

It was time to call the man who was truly mine.

I walked out onto the balcony and crushed the surveillance crystal Silas had left there.

Then I closed my eyes, poured the full force of my mind into the pack's magical communications network, and sent out a howl that cut through the clouds and shook the entire North.

When that ancient howl echoed, I spoke into the empty air.

"I'm here, Elias."

A few days later, the Alpha King's Court convened at the Supreme Tribunal of the North.Under the soaring dome, the air was heavy with tension.Backed by Elias's absolute royal authority, I could finally cut this filthy past out of my life for good.I stood on the dais above Silas, who knelt below in pure silver chains. The silver hissed as it burned his wrists, suppressing every trace of his wolf's strength. He knelt there, red-eyed, his gaze locked on me."No... Seraphina, please don't do this."At last, he felt real fear.I ignored his begging, lifted my head, and looked the chief judge straight in the eye."I, Seraphina Ashcroft, ask this court to confirm the following:"The document dissolving our bond, signed by both Silas and me, is fully valid. The false mate bond he forced on me through kidnapping, drugging, and lies has been void since the day the document was signed."And today, before this court, I state it again. I reject the mark Silas forced onto my neck. I reject his sc

After the banquet, Elias and I walked out of the hall side by side. The guards lining the corridor bowed their heads under the Alpha King's power. His broad hand hovered at my waist, not quite touching, yet claiming me all the same.We were about to get into the royal car.Suddenly, an engine roared from the shadows.A nauseating cloud of exhaust rolled toward us, mixed with the foul scent of a frantic lowborn wolf.Lyla, who'd followed Silas all the way to the North, raced out of the trees in a car.Jealousy and despair had driven her completely out of her mind.Harsh white headlights cut through the dark."Die! All of you, die!"She screamed as she floored the gas, ready to take us all down with her.The tires shrieked against the ground.Silas, who'd been lurking on the palace steps like a ghost, saw it and rushed over.He was already badly hurt, but he stumbled into the middle of the road anyway. He spread his arms wide, trying to put his own body between the car and me.There was

The Northern capital held a lavish coronation banquet in its palace of ice and snow.Under a huge crystal dome, nobles from every pack raised their glasses to Elias on his throne, all dressed in their finest.I sat beside Elias, wearing the Moon Goddess's crown as a symbol of supreme power, and looked over the hall below. At the height of the banquet, a burst of raw power blew the heavy oak doors inward.Silas staggered in like a crazed lone wolf. His clothes were in rags, and he was covered in dark, dried blood from the long journey and his reopened wounds.Under the disgusted stares of every noble in the North, he stumbled down the long red carpet like a beggar pleading for mercy. At the foot of the throne steps, he collapsed onto the cold marble floor."Seraphina..."His scarred hands trembled as he raised the recovered gems and bone carvings above his head, his voice stripped of every trace of pride. "I got them back for you."Please, will you forgive me? Come home with me."The ha

Silas sat in the pack's surveillance room like an empty shell, staring blankly. He replayed the magical recording from the front gates again and again. On the screen, I entered the powerful man's car without looking back. The finality of my departure pierced Silas's heart.A chill seeped into his bones. At last, he understood that he'd lost me forever. He stumbled out of the surveillance room and went to the Luna's bedroom, which Lyla had torn apart.Shredded fabric and broken furniture covered the floor, each ruined piece mocking the indulgence and stupidity that had brought him here.Silas sank down in the wreckage, searching through the dust with shaking hands until he found a broken wolf-fang carving. Two years earlier, when I still had no memory, I'd carved it for him with a grinder, bit by bit, as a charm to keep him safe.He remembered the grinder scraping my fingers raw. He remembered the pure trust in my eyes when I looked at him then.Regret swept over him like a black tide a

A deep engine roar rolled through the night as an SUV sped up to the gates and stopped. The dark-gold crest of the Northern royal house gleamed coldly on its side beneath the moonlight. The door opened. A tall, stern man stepped out, every movement controlled. It was Elias. He wore a perfectly cut black coat, and the sheer Alpha power radiating from him made the air feel thin. The pack guards who had just struggled upright collapsed again beneath that power, bowing so low they did not dare lift their heads.Elias ignored them like they were insects and walked straight toward me.He stopped before me, and his eyes held a tenderness so raw it hurt to see.He slowly reached out with a black-gloved hand and carefully smoothed my windblown hair."You've been through so much, my Luna."His rough voice carried five years of madness and obsession, along with the fierce reverence of a man who had found what he thought he had lost forever.I said nothing. I simply placed my hand in his warm palm

On a dark forest road, the air around the car froze in an instant.Silas snatched the spare communicator from a guard's hands and stared at my proud, unyielding figure on the screen. The moment he heard me say "Elias," violent shock flashed through his eyes.He knew better than anyone what that name meant."No. This can't be happening!"Silas roared wildly and smashed the communication crystal against the inside of the car.The violent outburst terrified Lyla. She reached for his sleeve."Silas, what's going on?""Get away from me!"Silas yanked his arm free so violently that Lyla fell back against the seat. One thought consumed him: Seraphina had recovered her memories. He had to reach the pack and lock her away again before the Reaper of the North arrived.Ignoring Lyla's terrified cries, he kicked the door open and jumped out without a second's hesitation. The instant he landed, his bones cracked and reshaped.A huge gray wolf burst through his expensive silk shirt as he shifted on
