Synopsis

Bias

Winning Back the Wife

Cheating

This was the 27th time Simon Callum and I had tried to get married at the civil office. When the staff member called out our number, his stepsister, Roxie Callum, suddenly bent over to hug her stomach. "Simon, my stomach hurts." Simon quickly held her. "I'll take you to the hospital right now." Roxie shook her head. "I'm fine. It's your big day with Elena. The pain will pass if I bear with it." Despite what she said, Roxie continued clinging to Simon's sleeve. Simon frowned. "You shouldn't force yourself to hold in the pain. I'll take you to the hospital right now." He stuffed the number in my hand. I looked at him. "It won't take long to get married here. Can't you give me 10 minutes of your time?" Simon did not even glance at me. "We've already postponed this 26 times. It won't make any difference to postpone it one more time." When I heard his matter-of-fact tone, I laughed. I realized he had always been aware of the situation, but he chose to take me for granted every time. "If we don't get married today, there won't be a 28th time, Simon." Simon held Roxie in his arms and did not even look up at me. "Stop making a fuss over this. Just wait while I take care of Roxie." I looked at my phone and sent a text to a number I had not contacted in a very long time. Elena: [Bring your ID and meet me at the civil office in 10 minutes.]

Chapter 1
My phone screen lit up less than half a minute after I sent that text with a new message: [Wait for me.]I stared at the sentence for several seconds before putting my phone away to see our number lit up on the screen in the hall.A027.The number flashed on the screen, indicating that it was my and Simon’s turn at Counter 3.Simon Callum was helping Roxie Callum onto a bench. He crouched in front of her and asked anxiously, "Does it still hurt? Can you walk?"Roxie looked pale, and she gripped his wrist gently. "I'm fine. I can bear the pain. You should get married at the civil office right now. Don't delay it because of me." Despite asking Simon to leave, she leaned closer into his arms. Simon held her even tighter. "Stop holding back the pain when it's hurting you so much." My mother walked over quickly and leaned close to Roxie to ask, "Roxie, are you feeling a cramp in your stomach, or are you feeling a burning pain? I've got some medication for gastritis in my car. “I'

Chapter 2
The last time we tried to get married, Roxie lost her cat. Simon stayed with her all night to find her cat, and he overslept the next day. Every time that happened, Roxie would be the first to say, "You don't need to do this with me, Simon."After that, Simon would tell me, "Roxie had always had insecurities since she was young. You need to be more understanding of her."I had been understanding 26 times.Molly came running back very quickly with the medication and some warm water. "I've got the medication, Roxie.""You'll need to rest for 10 minutes after taking it, Roxie. I'll stay with you here. The timing will be just right after Simon and Elena get their marriage certificate," said my mother.Roxie looked at the medication in front of her but did not reach out for it. After a few seconds, she lowered her head. "It's fine. I won't take it. Every time I get nervous, I'll throw up. Simon is the only one who knows how to take care of me."After that, Roxie looked at me and said

Chapter 3
"Are you coming with me to Counter 3, or are you leaving behind to accompany Roxie?"A dark look flashed in Simon's eyes. "Are you really trying to force me to make a choice when Roxie is sick, Elena?"I nodded without arguing further. "Fine. Do whatever you want, but I'll be getting my marriage certificate today."At 3:42 PM, my father arrived from the parking lot with some exquisite chocolates as our wedding favors for friends and family. When he arrived at the lobby, he saw Simon on one knee by the bench and his hand on Roxie's waist. His footsteps slowed down when he saw me standing in front of the counter alone, clutching my ID."What's with the delay?"Molly was trying her best not to lose her temper as she told my father what happened. All my father did was ask Simon a question without even looking at Roxie. "We've got all our documents, and the counter is waiting for both of you. Can't you spend 10 minutes getting the marriage license and take your sister to the hospital

Chapter 4
The moment I went up to Counter 3, I could hear hurried footsteps coming from behind me. Simon had caught up to me, and he pressed down on my ID. "This is enough, Elena," he said to me in a whisper, looking extremely upset. "How are you planning on getting a marriage license without my ID?"I pulled my hand away from his. "It's none of your business."My reply sounded ridiculous to Simon. "Our families are aware that we're both here to get our marriage license. What would my parents think of you when you're acting so brashly in front of everyone?"I felt like laughing. "You were the one who made everyone wait for you 27 times, and now you're worried about being embarrassed?"Simon had no reply. It was 3:56 PM, and the lobby was almost empty. The staff started to clear their counters. My father came to me and asked in a low voice, "Have you given proper thought to this, Elena?"I nodded. "I have."My mother did not talk me out of anything. All she did was hold my hand. "Never

Chapter 5
I placed my hand in Jamie's. His hand was cool, but his grip on mine was firm. Simon finally realized what was happening, and he quickly came toward me. "Are you crazy, Elena?"He tried to grab my hand, but Molly blocked him. My father came forward as well. "You know very well how many times Elena has asked you about this."Simon turned pale. "She's just throwing a tantrum, Mr. Whitford. We’ve been together for eight years. Why would she suddenly be willing to marry Jamie?"Jamie did not argue with Simon. All he did was turn to the staff member sitting behind the counter. "Can we still get our marriage license?"The staff member glanced at his computer. "We still have 30 seconds. Let's confirm your identification first."Jamie immediately handed over his ID, and the staff member started the procedure. He looked at me and said, "We need your ID too."I was about to hand it over when Simon stopped me. "Elena! Marriage is a lifelong commitment! You can't marry a random man just to

Chapter 6
Simon followed behind us, but my father stopped him from coming any further. "Their marriage license is in the process of being issued. You should stop harassing my daughter.""She doesn't love my brother, Mr. Whitford," Simon replied hoarsely. My father looked at him. "Did you cherish her when she loved you?"Simon went silent after hearing his reply. We were taking a picture to commemorate our marriage in a small corner. There were two chairs in front of us, and when I sat down, I realized my hair had gotten a little messy from the commotion before. I was about to tidy it when Jamie took out a hairpin adorned with pearls from his suit pocket. I was surprised. "Where did you get this?""I found it last month in the car," he replied casually. I recognized it. I had dropped that hairpin while sitting on the steps outside the civil office when I failed to get my marriage license for the 26th time. That was also the day when Roxie lost her cat, and Simon spent the entire night ou

Chapter 7
Roxie did not suffer from any internal bleeding, nor were there any other serious symptoms. When the nurse was cross-checking her medical records, she asked, "Didn't you have an appointment today for a painless gastroscopy? Your appointment was for before 10.30 AM. Why did you arrive so late?"Simon was taken aback. "Did you make the appointment three days ago?"Roxie's expression froze. "I didn't want to do it, Simon. I only came to the hospital for a check-up because my stomach hurt."The nurse lowered her head to check the records. "You've even filled out your family's information in advance. You must be Simon Callum."Simon's name was clearly indicated in the document. He stared at his name and stayed silent for a long time. It was only then that Simon realized that Roxie did not ask him to accompany her because she had sudden gastritis.Roxie had known for three days that someone had to accompany her for a check-up today. She also knew that this was the 27th time Simon and I

Jamie stood up not long after sitting down to speak respectfully to my parents. "Mr. and Mrs. Whitford, I know my decision today has been sudden, but I'm not helping anyone to smooth things over by marrying Elena. Elena will decide when or if we decide to have a wedding ceremony. You may take this time to observe if I'm good enough for her."My father remained stoic. "Isn't it a little too late to do that now that you're both married?"Jamie paused before replying, "I'll accept a long-term probation period."Molly burst out laughing at this, and the tension throughout the day finally vanished. Before our food was served, Jamie showed me a document, and I frowned at it. "What's this?""This is a draft of a prenuptial agreement. You don't have to sign it right now." He pushed the document toward me. "Any of your assets before marriage will belong to you, while any assets we purchase after marriage may belong to us individually. The house, which is under my name, will be transferred t

"I've given you plenty of chances today. We got medication for Roxie, called a taxi for her, and even my mom was willing to accompany her to the hospital. I gave you a choice, and you chose her. My father gave you a choice, and you still chose her."At the very last minute, I asked you one more time, and you told me in your own words that we could get married on any other day, Simon."Simon's lips trembled. "I just thought—""What did you think?"Simon was silent for a long time before answering hoarsely, "I thought you wouldn't really leave me."His answer was so astoundingly simple that it made me laugh. "You knew that I would feel sad about it, but you thought I would never leave you."Simon stood still, unable to say anything more. That was when more footsteps were heard coming from the corridor. Roxie appeared with Melinda holding onto her. She looked much healthier than when she was at the civil office."Elena, it's true that I have gastritis. You can't blame everything on

Chapter 10
"Elena didn't stop Simon from taking care of Roxie. She just stopped waiting for her own sake. You have the right to ask for your daughter to be cared for, but you don't have the right to ask another person to always make way for her."Melinda turned pale, while Terence looked at Simon. "Why didn't you just get married first?"Simon lowered his head. "I thought Elena would wait for me."Terence closed his eyes. It was not until now that he realizedthat this was not a decision that had been made brashly.Jamie returned to sit by my side. "I didn't take anyone from anybody, Dad. Elena came to me. She chose me, and for that, I won't let anyone make her turn away from her choice."I looked at him, feeling touched by his words. I had been working hard for the past eight years to prove that I was worthy to be chosen by Simon. It was only now that I realized that I did not need to fight for anything if someone had already chosen me, nor would that person make me wait.My father was sile
