Chapter 2

Author: Warm Flow
Even the most beautiful gift, given with the deepest love, was nothing but trash to Jensen.

Lauren smiled in despair and stared at the man who caused her so much pain.

A mocking smile touched his lips.

"Are you enjoying yourself? You did everything you could to get me. Don't regret it now. It's far too early for that!"

Her skin bruised easily under his rough hands. Purple marks covered her body.

To him, she was only someone he could use to satisfy himself.

He showed her no tenderness.

Lauren tried desperately to hide how much he hurt her.

But tears spilled down her cheeks. "Jensen Shaw, no one will ever love you the way I do. One day, you'll regret this! Jensen..."

She called his name again and again.

Her voice broke, and her nails dug into his back.

"What right does someone like you have to talk about love?"

In five years of marriage, Jensen never saw her cry like this.

Tears covered her face, and the depth of her grief caught him off guard.

Did he feel sorry for her?

Of course not.

How could Jensen possibly feel sorry for Lauren?

This was just another way to make him pity her. He almost laughed.

"Lauren Sullivan, when you drove Vivian away and forced me to marry you, you should have known I'd make you suffer a hundred times more than I did," he said coldly.

"I didn't... She left on her own... I didn't..."

Lauren struggled to explain.

Five years ago, Lauren put the entire Sullivan Group, worth a billion dollars, on the line to help Jensen’s family through a financial crisis.

She spared no expense.

Jensen’s girlfriend at the time, Vivian Shea, left the country without a word.

Lauren believed no one in the world loved Jensen more than she did.

She gave up the fortune her parents left her for the title of Mrs. Shaw.

What she got with it was Jensen’s hatred and five years of suffering.

"You look awful when you cry."

Jensen covered her mouth with his hand.

Only faint sobs escaped.

Lauren Sullivan, once so proud, was reduced to crying helplessly beneath him.

He kept her there until morning.

He left Lauren on the disheveled sofa like a discarded doll.

Jensen changed clothes, put on a suit, and headed out.

He didn't spare the listless woman a glance.

He opened the door.

Vivian stood outside, looking gentle as ever. "Jensen."

He frowned almost imperceptibly. "What are you doing here?"

"I... I missed you."

Vivian spoke softly, her voice full of hurt. "I came to ask Lauren not to send me away again. I won't threaten her place as Mrs. Shaw."

"What could you possibly have to say to her?" Jensen asked impatiently.

So, Vivian was back.

Lauren suddenly understood why Jensen was angrier than usual last night.

It felt as though something tore open inside her chest.

Blood poured from the wound.

She wanted to hold it closed and wait for it to heal.

But the bleeding wouldn't stop. The wound only seemed to grow worse.

Lauren gave herself a bitter smile.

She pulled on her nightgown.

It couldn't hide the bruises on her arms and neck, so she simply swept her long hair back.

Then she walked to the door.

Vivian saw the marks on Lauren’s body.

Jealousy flashed in her eyes.

It vanished almost at once.

She clutched Jensen’s arm and looked frightened. "Lauren, please don't look at me like that... I never wanted to take your place as Mrs. Shaw. I just love Jensen so much that I want to be near him..."

Lauren’s mouth curved into a cold smile. "So that's your excuse for being his mistress?"

"Lauren Sullivan, I truly love Jensen."

Vivian looked at her with tears gathering in her eyes. "If it weren't for you, I would have stayed by his side. I tried to leave him, but I can't... I really can't. Please stop forcing me to go."

"I'm forcing you?"

Lauren laughed bitterly.

Vivian was even better at twisting the truth than she was five years ago.

"If she wants to keep this going, let her," Jensen said, cutting them off.

He put an arm around Vivian and led her out.

He couldn't be bothered to say another word to Lauren.

He certainly wouldn't stand by while she spoke badly of Vivian.

Vivian was the woman he held closest to his heart.

Lauren was only the woman who forced him to stay with her.

She was the wife he despised.

In his eyes, they were never worth comparing.

"Jensen."

Lauren rose stiffly to her feet.

His name was all she could manage.

He turned back, his voice cold. "Lauren Sullivan, I'm warning you. If even one hair on Vivian’s head is harmed, I'll make you pay a thousand times over."

Why bother warning her?

Wasn't that what he did for the past five years?

Lauren had so much she wanted to tell him.

At that moment, she couldn't say a word.

Vivian leaned against Jensen and glanced back without drawing his notice.

A faint smile touched her lips.

[Lauren Sullivan, what makes you think you can compete with me?]

More than a dozen people set the documents by the entrance. The stacks of property deeds and share certificates alone were enough to block the doorway.Lauren stared at Jensen. “Have you lost your mind?”“Yes.” Jensen nodded. “I caught it from you, and there’s no cure. So, you’ll have to take responsibility for me.”Lauren had no answer. He had lost his mind and all sense of shame. What was she supposed to do with him?The doorway was blocked. She could not even leave. There was nowhere to go.Quentin tugged her hand and whispered, “He looks really rich...”Lauren took a deep breath. “Half of this already belongs to us. We’re rich too.”“But half isn’t as good as all of it,” Quentin whispered. “Even a kid in grade school knows which one to choose.”Lauren was speechless.Perhaps she had made Quentin live too frugally for too long. Now the sight of all that money had stopped him in his tracks. The silence grew awkward. Then Jensen took Lauren’s right hand and dropped to one knee.Af

“Jensen, let go!” His grip made Lauren’s wrist ache. She frowned. “Let me go!”“No!” Jensen was furious. “It took me so long to find you...”His eyes were bloodshot, and his voice was hoarse. “You said you loved me. You said you wanted to spend your life with me! You made me what I am, Lauren. Now you think you can say the past doesn’t matter, leave me, and marry another man? I won’t let you!”Jensen had not slept in two days. He searched everywhere before finally finding her.And here she was, looking at wedding dresses with another man. Was she going to marry him?Lauren wrenched her wrist free and slapped Jensen. The sharp sound rang through the quiet boutique.“Jensen, are you finished?” she asked coldly. When they first met again, she thought they might be able to stay civil. They had loved and hated each other; perhaps they could at least part on decent terms. She no longer believed that.Jensen stared at her with red eyes and said nothing. He had once been known in Cloudhav

The two had always argued, yet somehow they had found their way to marriage.“I can hardly believe it myself,” Evelyn said.“When two people are right for each other, it’s easy to fall in love over time,” Lauren said. She and Jensen had spent five years together and only come to resent eac

By the time Jensen returned to the apartment building, it was dark.He knocked on Lauren’s door for a long time, but no one answered. She did not pick up his calls either. When he contacted the landlady, she told him, “Miss Sullivan ended her lease early.”Jensen panicked.Lauren was gone.Just as she had done before, she disappeared from his life without hesitation. He called on everyone he knew to find her. Finding information overseas took far longer than it would have in Cloudhaven. It was late at night before he heard anything. His assistant finished a call and approached Jensen, who had been sitting outside Lauren’s door the whole time. “Mr. Shaw, we found her. Mrs. Shaw took your son back to Cloudhaven.”“Cloudhaven?”Jensen’s voice was hoarse. Then he gave a sudden smile. “She’s still willing to go back there. That’s good.”His assistant asked cautiously, “If she’s returned to Cloudhaven, there may be questions about her shares in the group...”“I hope she comes to claim th

Jensen hit the water with a loud splash.Lauren froze. Her mind went blank.A few seconds later, people walking along the river began to shout.“Someone jumped in!”“Help him!”Voices in different languages rose around her until she could barely think.Quentin’s little face went white. The ripples spread, then slowly faded. It was as if nothing had happened.Lauren ran so fast that she fell hard. She scraped her knees and palms bloody, but felt no pain as she scrambled to the water’s edge.“Jensen!”Tears spilled down her cheeks. Quentin called for her from the railing, but their voices blurred together. For a moment, her whole world seemed to turn upside down.
